After Peter had denied Jesus three times, the cock crowed. “He went out and began to weep bitterly.”

(Luke 22:62)

For the past few weeks, I selected some beautiful paintings by an Italian artist Giovanni Francesco Barbieri (Guercino) to illustrate the Gospel of the day and help us to pray. This week, I continue the recent trend and share the painting by Guercino entitled St. Peter weeping before the Virgin (1647). Ever since discovering Barbieri, I was absorbed by his art and began to search and look at other pieces of art painted by him. In my search, I found this painting that caused me to stop and reflect. At my first discovery, I knew that I wanted to return back to this moving image later for more reflection. As we begin Holy Week, I feel that this is a very appropriate moment to return back to this heartbreaking painting because I feel that there is something in this moving painting that can help us to pray, reflect, and help us focus our mind and soul during Holy Week. Barbieri paints a scene that is not found exactly in the Gospels, although it is based in Scripture. On the right is St. Peter and he is weeping. He is holding a cloth to his eyes, suggesting that his is crying

in the present moment. Why is St Peter crying? Recall the words of Scripture that we hear today, on Passion Sunday. After Peter had denied Jesus three times, the cock crowed. “He went out and began to weep bitterly” (Luke 22:62). Thus, we see the biblical root for his painting. Peter is weeping because he has denied knowing the Lord Jesus three times.

In this image, Barbieri paints an encounter following St. Peter’s denial of Christ; it is an encounter that, although not recorded in the Bible, probably did happen in real life. It is the moment when St. Peter comes to Mary and admits to her that he had denied her Son three times. He confesses to her that he had just abandoned Jesus and turned away from Jesus, at a moment in her Son’s life when Jesus needed him the most. In this painting, we see the Blessed Virgin Mary seated on the left. Mary is very sad. The redness around her eyes and nose suggest that she is crying. Mary is grieving because her Son has been beaten, arrested, and taken away from her. She knows that only worse things await her beloved Son. Now, instead of receiving comfort and consolation in her grief from Jesus’ disciple, her sadness and grief is now compounded when she hears about Peter’s denial and sin. The face of the Blessed Mother is somber and she is looking down cheerlessly; her heart feels betrayed and wounded by his denial as well.

In this painful and heartbreaking image, St. Peter represents all of us. Every time we sin, we deny Jesus, and this denial of Jesus brings great sorrow and pain to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Do we realize this when we choose to sin? In one of the Stations of the Cross that I was using for prayer this Lent, I found the meditation for Station IV (Jesus meets his Mother) very heartrending: “The meeting of the Son with the Mother is full of pain. When we sin, do we think of our mother? Would our mother be proud of our actions? Mary, the Mother of Jesus, is, likewise, our mother. How would our meeting with Mary our Mother look like?”

In this poignant painting of Barbieri, Peter stands in the place of every one of us. It is a touching image that should help us to meditate, reflect, and pray this Holy Week. Jesus suffers greatly because of our sins. Not only do our sins cause Jesus great pain and suffering, but the Blessed Mother also suffers immense pain and sorrow because of our sin. Do we realize this? This Holy Week, let us come before our Blessed Mother, like St. Peter, admit our sins, ask for her forgiveness, and offer her our love, consolation, and comfort in her grief, sorrows, and pain.

Las últimas semanas, he seleccionado algunas pinturas hermosas de un artista italiano Giovanni Fran-cesco Barbieri (Guercino) para ilustrar el Evangelio del día y ayudarnos a orar. Esta semana, continúo la ten-dencia reciente y comparto la pintura de Guercino titulado San Pedro llorando ante la Virgen (1647). Desde el descubrimiento de Barbieri, fui absorbido por su arte y empecé a buscar y mirar a otras piezas de arte pintadas por él. En mi búsqueda, me encontré con esta pintura que me hizo parar y reflexionar. En mi primer descu-brimiento, sabía que quería volver de nuevo a esta imagen conmovedora después para más reflexión. A medida que comenzamos la Semana Santa, siento que este es un momento muy apropiado para volver de nuevo a este cuadro desgarrador porque siento que hay algo en esta pintura conmovedora que nos puede ayudar a rezar, re-flexionar y ayudarnos a enfocar nuestra mente y alma durante la Semana Santa. Barbieri pinta una escena que no se encuentra exactamente en el Evangelio, aunque está basada en la Escritura. A la derecha está San Pedro y está llorando. Él está sosteniendo un paño junto a sus ojos, lo que

sugiere que está llorando en el momento presente. ¿Por qué está San Pedro llorando? Recordemos las palabras de la Escritura que oímos hoy en día, el Domingo de Pasión. Después de que Pedro había negado a Jesús tres veces, el gallo can-tó. "Él salió y comenzó a llorar amargamen-te" (Lucas 22:62). Por lo tanto, vemos la raíz bíblica para su pintura. Pedro está llorando por-que ha negado conocer al Señor Jesús tres ve-ces. Ella está muy triste. El enrojeci-miento alrededor de sus ojos y la nariz sugiere que está llorando. María está afligida porque su hijo ha sido golpeado, detenido y lle-vado lejos de ella. Ella sabe que a su amado Hijo sólo le esperan cosas peores. Ahora, en lugar de recibir alivio y consuelo en su dolor del discípulo de Jesús, a su tristeza y dolor se suma otro más cuando escucha sobre la negación y el pecado de Pedro. El rostro de la Virgen es sombrío y ella está mirando hacia abajo abatida; su corazón se siente traicionado y herido por su negación también. En esta imagen dolorosa y desgarradora, San Pedro nos representa a todos. Cada vez que pecamos, negamos a Jesús y esta negación, trae gran tristeza y dolor al Inmaculado Corazón de María. ¿Nos damos cuenta de esto cuando decidimos pecar? En una de las estaciones de la cruz que estaba usando para la oración esta Cuaresma, he encontrado la meditación de la estación IV (Jesús encuentra a su Madre) muy desgarradora: "La reunión del Hijo con la Madre está llena de dolor. Cuando pecamos, pensamos en nuestra madre? Estaría nuestra madre orgullosa de nuestras acciones? María, la Madre de Jesús, es asimismo, nuestra madre! . ¿Cómo sería nuestro encuentro con María nuestra Madre?" En este cuadro conmovedor de Barbieri, Pedro se encuentra en el lugar de cada uno de nosotros. Es una imagen conmove-dora que debería ayudarnos a meditar, reflexionar y orar esta Semana Santa. Jesús sufre en gran medida a causa de nuestros pecados. No sólo nuestros pecados causan a Jesús un gran dolor y sufrimiento, la Santísima Madre también sufre inmenso dolor y tristeza a causa de nuestro pecado. ¿Nos damos cuenta de esto? Esta Semana Santa, vayamos ante nuestra Santa Madre, como San Pedro, admitir nuestros pecados, pedir su perdón, y ofrecerle nuestra amor, consuelo y comodidad en su dolor.

Z biurka Ks. Proboszcza Tydzień oraz dwa tygodnie temu, na łamach niniejszego biuletynu gościły dzieła pędzla włoskiego artysty, Giovanniego Francesco Barbieriego (zwanego Guercino). Kontynuując owy trend, pragnę Wam tym razem pokazać kolejny jego obraz: „Święty Piotr płaczący przed Maryją” (1647 rok). Twórczość Barberiego fascynowała mnie od samego początku. Z ciekawości zacząłem czytać jego biografię i przeglądać obrazy. Tak natrafiłem na ten obraz, który pobudził mnie do refleksji. W tym dziele jest coś niezwykłego, co może nam pomóc lepiej przygotować się na Wielki Tydzień. Scena na obrazie Barberiego nie została dosłownie opisana w Piśmie Świętym, chociaż do niego nawiązuje. Po prawej widzimy płaczącego świętego Piotra. Ociera oczy chusteczką, co może znaczyć, że płacze w tej chwili. Żeby zrozumieć, dlaczego Piotr płacze, musimy sobie

przypomnieć słowa dzisiejszej Ewangelii. Piotr trzykrotnie zaparł się Jezusa i zapiał kogut. Potem Piotr: „Wyszedł na zewnątrz i gorzko zapłakał” (Ewangelia według św. Łukasza 22:62). Wiemy już skąd artysta czerpał tutaj inspirację. Piotr płacze, gdyż trzy razy wyparł się znajomości z Mesjaszem. W swoim dziele, malarz ukazuje moment tuż po powyższym wydarzeniu. Owa scena (chociaż nieobecna w Ewangelii) mogła się zdarzyć naprawdę. Święty Piotr przychodzi do Maryi i wyznaje, że trzy razy zaparł się Jej Syna kiedy Ten potrzebował go najbardziej. Na tym obrazie, Najświętsza Maryja siedzi po lewej. Widać, że płacze. Płacze, bo zbito, aresztowano i zabrano Jej Syna. Maryja dobrze wie, że na Jej umiłowanego Syna czeka coś jeszcze gorszego. Maryja dowiaduje się o zdradzie Piotra. Apostoł Jezusa, zamiast ulżyć Jej w cierpieniu, swoim wyznaniem jeszcze bardziej je potęguje. Twarz Maryi jest blada i poważna – grzech Piotra jest dla Niej kolejnym ciosem. W tej bolesnej scenie, święty Piotr uosabia każdego z nas. Dopuszczając się grzechu, za każdym razem zapieramy się Jezusa. Czy zdajemy sobie sprawę z tego, że grzesząc, za każdym razem zapieramy się Jezusa? Że sprawiamy ból Niepokalanemu Sercu Maryi? Medytując podczas Wielkiego Postu nad Stacjami Drogi Krzyżowej, znalazłem taki komentarz do Stacji IV (Jezus spotyka swoją matkę): „Spotkanie Syna z Matką pełne jest boleści. Czy my, grzesząc, myślimy o własnej matce? Czy nasza matka byłaby zadowolona? Pamiętajmy o tym, że Maryja, Matka Jezusa, jest także Matką każdego z nas. Jak wobec tego wyglądałoby nasze z Nią spotkanie?” To poruszające dzieło może nam pomóc w rozmyślaniach i modlitwie podczas Wielkiego Tygodnia. Każdy nasz grzech sprawia Panu ogromne cierpienie. Maryja również boleśnie je odczuwa. Stańmy więc przed obliczem Matki. Wyznajmy Jej nasze grzechy i prośmy o przebaczenie. Ofiarujmy Jej pociechę i ukojenie w Jej smutku i bólu.

As part of the total $350 million goal, To Teach Who Christ Is will raise a minimum of $150 million to support local needs in every parish across Chicago.

Our goal at St. Joseph is $537,000. We will receive 60% of the funds raised. We will also receive 100% of any funds raised if we exceed our goal.
