ST. BASIL MASS SCHEDULE Saturday: 5:00pm & 7:00pm (Spanish) Sunday: 9:00 and 11:00am M T & W: 9:00am Friday: 5:00pm Confessions: Saturday 4pm
Real Presence: What if We Believed It?
OK, the title is inflammatory on purpose... Of course we
believe in the Real Presence. By this we mean that Christ is
truly present, Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity, in the conse-
crated Host and in the consecrated wine in the Chalice.
That these substances, while remaining the same in every
aspect of their physical characteristics, are actually and truly
changed into something else — the Body and Blood of
Christ. The doctrinal term for this is “transubstantiation,”
meaning to change in substance.
A recent survey revealed that a large percentage of Cath-
olics do not believe this as described above, but rather be-
lieve that the Eucharistic species (the term the church uses
for “substances”) are symbols of the body and blood of
Christ. But that is not the Church’s teaching.
Those of us who do believe in the Real Presence of
Christ in the Eucharist have a challenge: how should we
respond to the news in this survey? What can we do to help
foster a renewal of faith in the Real Presence of Christ in this
holy sacrament? Naturally, I have a couple of ideas in mind.
They are here for your consideration; if they are helpful, I’m
glad.
First, personally, I do firmly and fully believe in the Real
Presence. I have never questioned it, but I have expanded
my understanding of it. I don’t think that we have any idea
how truly wonderful this Presence is. I think that
“transubstantiation,” while true, is inadequate to explain the
gift that we receive in this sacrament. The reality must be far
greater than anything we can comprehend. This is God’s
work, and we should not expect to understand how God
does what God does..
Second, I believe that Jesus gave this gift for a reason,
namely, that God not only loved the world so much that He
gave His only Son, but that the Son (and His Father) want to
go even further — Jesus is not only a historical figure of a
certain time and place, but, having risen from the dead,
Christ now becomes an abiding presence in the world and in
each person, individually, who chooses to share in the Bread
of Life, which is His Body, and to drink from the cup of the
New Covenant in His Blood.
Maybe the reason so many people don’t believe this is
that it’s unbelievable! How amazing is it that God reaches
out to us so personally, so individually, so intimately, as to
have His Body become a part of our body...?

MINISTRY ASSIGNMENTS
The article form Rick Hardy Continued
A sister in my elementary school once told us that if the
priest ever fully realized what he was doing as he spoke the
words of institution, “This is my Body... this is my blood,”
that he would die on the spot. (The sisters were not afraid
to include a little hyperbole in their instruction!)
But what would happen if WE were to realize, even par-
tially, what we are actually doing, celebrating, and receiv-
ing? Wouldn’t that be life-changing? Wouldn’t it fill us with
an urgent gratitude that would shape the rest of our entire
life? And if we were to leave our Eucharistic assembly
changed into people of gratitude, charity, and mercy, would
that not change the world?
The purpose of Lent is for us to change our hearts, with
God’s help. In this year of the Eucharist, maybe, with God’s
help, we can find a way to live as if we truly believed in the
Real Presence of Christ in US...!
