March 17, 2019 - 2nd Sunday of Lent

“I am the Lord who brought you from Ur of

the Chaldeans to give you this land as a

possession.” (Genesis 15:7)

Just as the Lord gave Abraham, Moses and the Israel-

ites a land to possess, He has also given each of us a

home. Whether your home is grand or humble, it is a

gift from God. Abraham prepared a great sacrifice to

the Lord in gratitude for the home God gave him.

How do you show your gratitude to God for the home

He has given you? Do you make a sacrifice of any

kind? Do you return any of your finances to God, in-

vesting equally in your eternal home just as you invest

in your earthly home?

2019 Bishop’s Annual Appeal

Help Build a Civilization of Love

This weekend, parishes throughout the Diocese of

Metuchen are celebrating the Bishop’s Annual Ap-

peal In-Pew Weekend. Our goal is for every family

to participate. Every gift, no matter the size, is im-

portant and greatly appreciated. Together, we are

working to become kindling that is set aflame by

the Holy spirit, allowing God’s love and power to

burn more brightly here in the Diocese of Metu-

chen. Thank you for actively participating in this

mission by your financial support.

A Reflection by Msgr. Celano

given on the First Sunday of Lent

“Is God secondary… to far more urgent matters?”

The Gospel for the First Sunday of Lent is always the

same; the temptations of Christ. Mark’s account is the

shortest. He simply states that Jesus went into the desert

for 40 days and was tempted by the devil. Matthew gives

us more insight into the nature of those temptations, but

it is Luke, whose account we hear this weekend, who

tells us that these temptations were continuous through-

out Christ’s life. In fact, Luke ends the temptation narra-

tive with these words “…and the devil departed from

Him awaiting a more opportune time.”

Christ’s temptations in the wilderness are frontal assaults

on His very nature and mission. The tempter begins; “If

you are the Son of God…”. By undermining Christ’s

own identity, he suggests that there is another path Christ

could follow. Why not feed yourself instead of the multi-

tudes hungry for the Word of God? Why not make a

show of your greatness instead of humbling yourself

even to death on the cross? Why not exchange the king-

dom of heaven for “celebrity status” in the world?

These temptations are also the temptations of the Church

and of every Christian; to turn away from the path that

leads us to the cross, to choose to serve ourselves instead

of others, to believe what the world offers us is more

necessary and fulfilling than what God offers us.

In his “Jesus of Nazareth”, Benedict XVI shapes the

temptations in this context:

“At the heart of all temptations, as we see here, is the act

of pushing God aside because we perceive him as sec-

ondary; if not actually superfluous and annoying, in com-

parison with all the apparently more urgent matters that

fill our lives…

[Temptation] does not invite us directly to do evil –no,

that would be far too blatant. Rather, it pretends to show

us a better way…”

Jesus of Nazareth, p.28-29

Before you blurt out, “Of course, God is not ‘secondary

or superfluous’,” consider this: Don’t we make God

“secondary and superfluous” every time we excuse our-

selves from Sunday Mass because there is a paper to

write, or because it’s my only day to sleep in, or tell my-

self that I don’t need the church to pray? Doesn’t God

become secondary when we bend the truth a little, stray a

little from chastity or marital fidelity, nurse a grudge, talk

about our neighbor, fail to stand for what is right and

good, or turn a blind eye to the poor and suffering? We

need to remember that the tempter does not have horns

and a red cape and lure us to do something blatantly evil.

More often, he comes in an appealing form and simply

suggests that we serve our own interests, and not God’s.

So, if the temptation we face is to make God “secondary

and superfluous” to other concerns, then the victory over

temptation comes when God is made “primary and rele-

vant”, not just in some aspects of life, but in all aspects of

life.

Lent calls each of us to conversion – to throw open the

doors of our life to Christ. Let no “suggestion” of a better

way, an easier way, a more agreeable way, entice you.

There is but one way to the fullness of life; Jesus Christ!

He is the victor over sin and death and in His name the

tempter must retreat.
