Letter to Our Readers Okay, enough with the cold weather and the snow! It’s time to get outside and start celebrating. And what better way to start than with the upcoming twenty-eight (28) St. Patrick’s Day Parades taking place within New Jersey this month. Additionally, there’s the iconic NYC Parade, held on “the Day” plus six additional parades taking place in other major cities within the USA, including St. Croix, USVI. Take a few moments and enjoy this issue’s main editorial feature. A few years back, the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations helped give a start to two young musicians who began playing their music in Irish pubs in the Matawan area. Catch this month’s Band Profile and read about The Clifton Brothers, au local musical duo who have recently expanded their repertoire, as well as the number of area venues at which they now entertain their many fans. Staying with the Irish mood for another moment, we like to introduce to our Mixologist of the Month, Coleen Murphy-Cistone, a local resident of Old Bridge who left Wall Street in ’01 and now enjoys bartending at the Pine Tavern. After seven years at this popular area restaurant, her regular customers, as well as new visitors, appreciate Colleen’s “keep me busy / keep me going” attitude. Stop in, have a libation and say hello to this “Irish lass”. Now, as we move forward into the warmer months, think about sitting down on an outdoor deck with a waterfront view and enjoying a cool drink and a delicious meal. This becomes reality at River Rock Marina Bar & Restaurant in Brick, overlooking the Manasquan River. Or go inside to a spacious restaurant with four bar areas, a casual atmosphere and great service. Learn more in this month’s Restaurant Profile. Finally, for a change of pace, we’d like to introduce you to the Two River Theater, a dual-stage venue located in Red Bank. This popular structure is celebrating its ninth year offering both professional, as well as amateur performances to the delight of its audiences. Read more in our Behind The Footlights feature, than plan an evening out to visit one of the theater’s productions.

Looking a bit forward, this Spring and Summer will be spectacular! Get ready to usher in the warmer weather by stopping by the River Rock Marina Bar and Restaurant in Brick to enjoy their new beach bar coming in May

that will offer outside entertainment and drink specials. Dine and enjoy your cocktails on the 120-seat waterfront deck overlooking the Manasquan River. Enjoy the refreshing waterfront view, indulge in delicious meals, great service, ambiance and atmosphere,

all at this resplendent destination. This popular riverfront eatery, redone from the ground up after Superstorm Sandy hit the area in October of 2012, offers a full-service restaurant, where patrons may enjoy American cuisine, including fresh seafood, juicy steaks, crispy wings and more. This wonderful riverfront restaurant and bar on the marina also offers guests what manager Maria Conrow calls, “the best pizza in New Jersey.” It’s the wood-fired pizza oven that creates the unique taste, and according to Conrow, “it can’t be beat.” In addition to its many amenities, including Happy Hour, specialty nights and live entertainment, the restaurant also offers a banquet and event center for private and corporate parties. Guests have their choice of sitting in one of three main

bars in this unique 10,000-square-foot restaurant, where they can enjoy appetizers and cocktails with friends or a special date. The restaurant offers patrons 47 TVs to view their favorite sport games or UFC pay-per-view. “Our restaurant is casual

and welcoming,” Conrow said, adding that guests will “immediately feel at home.” This eatery is unique in that it offers a family-oriented atmosphere to enjoy a family dinner by day, and then offers entertainment complete with club lighting and music, once night falls. The River Rock Marina Bar and Restaurant also offers a variety of specials throughout the

week, along with live weekend entertainment. And, families are always welcome here, but Monday nights offers specific family fun when the restaurant celebrates Family Funday Monday with special entertainment for youngsters. Also on tap are half-price thin-crust pizzas and half-price pitchers of domestic beer and soda. Get your game on at the restaurant on Tuesday nights with Trivia Bingo Night with Jimmy Steal. On Wednesday nights enjoy the rhythm of Predator

Dub Assassins from 6:00 to 9:30 pm. Move to the beat of some great reggae music as you enjoy dinner or cocktails. Enjoy $4 glasses of House Wine and $2.50 Miller Lite drafts. Come as you are right from work on Thursdays and enjoy “No Shower”

Happy Hour from 4:00 to 8:00 pm with DJ Jersey Joe, followed by Grab the Mic Karaoke at 9:00 pm. Enjoy $4 Captain Morgan drinks and $2.50 Coors Light drafts. Friday evenings at River Rock features acoustic Happy Hour from 3:00 to 7:00 pm. Enjoy appetizers in the bar,

hang out at the cool high-top tables, and enjoy the warm, cozy atmosphere. Then, hit the dance floor to strut your stuff to the rocking live bands who will entertain you with club party music. Saturday nights bring the music of DJs playing rock music in the bar area. UFC fighting is also available for guests

on pay-per-view on Saturday nights. And Happy Hour is on tap Monday through Friday from 3:00 to 7:00 pm.

The River Rock offers its patrons fresh seafood delivered daily

by from local fisheries. Experience freshly prepared seafood starters, such as the Drunkin Clams, sautéed in beer broth and served with garlic bread, or the Seafood Bruschetta, with shrimp, scallops, Roma tomatoes, onions and garlic, or the Tuna Cajun Bites, sautéed in Cajun seasoning served with Ranch dressing.

The appetizer menu includes Mozzarella Luna, breaded Buffalo mozzarella half-moons with homemade marinara sauce, or the House Specialty -- the River Rock Volcanic Nachos, with chili, cheese, tomatoes, sour cream, salsa and guacamole. Or try the Cajun Steak bites, with Cajun seasoning. Wood-fire pizza is offered in a variety of types, including, Margherita, Traditional, White and Meat Lovers, among other varieties, with an endless variety of toppings to select.

Entrees include River Rock Pura Vida, shrimp and scallops sautéed in a teriyaki, pineapple, and mango sauce with coconut rice served in a

hollowed pineapple. New York Sirloin Steak is also a delicious choice as are some great fresh fish dishes, such as North Atlantic Salmon, gently broiled salmon served with a honey scallion sesame soy compliment. Wraps, soups and sandwiches are also on the menu. The eatery also offers children a special menu, which includes Grilled Cheese, Cheeseburgers, Chicken Tenders, Grilled Chicken, Pizza and Pasta and more. So whether it’s an intimate date, an evening with friends for game viewing and cocktails, a family dinner or a private party, the River Rock Marina Bar and Restaurant is here to accommodate you.. There are many famous brothers in rock music -- the Davies (Kinks), Gallaghers (Oasis), Allman Brothers, and more. For some, sibling rivalry blew them up, for others, untimely demises changed them forever. But some bonds are unbreakable. The Clifton Brothers,

Central Jersey’s versatile rock cover duo, not only play with each other, but play off of each other for constant mutual motivation and inspiration. The Clifton Brothers are lead vocalist Billy and guitarist/backing vocalist Bobby. Born on July 5 three years apart, they both got into music as they entered high school. Bobby spent a lot of his free time playing guitar while Billy sang in several bands. When they entered their mid-20s they started a 90s rock cover band called The Shots with their best friends Rob (drums) and Chris (bass), naming themselves The Shots and then calling themselves Straight Up. The brothers eventually scaled back to being a duo three years ago. Growing up it was Chris who played a big part in helping Bobby learn guitar. They hung out and played whenever they could manage in high school and motivated each other to get better. “We kind of got better from each other,” Bobby said. “He would show me how to do something then I would show him how to do something and he would get better than me so that motivated me to get better than him.” As such a simplistic duo with one guitar and one vocalist they can play any style of music. They work hard to be able to cover anything and strive to know at least one song from every popular artist so they can play to any crowd. They can hit Michael Jackson and Guns N’ Roses just as well as Katy Perry. “We pride ourselves in being fun and covering all genres and being able to pull it off,” says Bobby. “We can play really any style of music. We don’t have all the complications of how to make things sound good. We try to play everything, with just chords you could play any song. No matter if it’s dance or if it’s

The

techno. If you were electric and you played some of this stuff that’s coming out it’s hard to do, but if you just have your basic chords you can actually pull it off easier.” Bobby is a fan of punk bands like Blink 182 and Billy is more into hard rock like AC/DC but they will cater to the crowd and play whatever gets a response. “I wouldn’t necessarily tell you that I like playing Bon Jovi or Journey by any stretch but I do love when the people are all into it,” Bobby says. Whether it’s a drinking crowd that wants things a bit nutty or a teenage crowd that wants pop and dance music, they can pull off whatever needs to be played on a given night. The Clifton Brothers can be found mostly around the Matawan area. They also tend to hit JakeaBob’s in Union Beach, Donovan’s Reef in Sea Bright, The Blue Rock Café in Keyport, Friday’s in Old Bridge and several of the MJ’s locations. They will be at their usual St. Patrick’s Day stop (Maloney’s Pub on Main Street in Matawan), their fifth year in a row performing there. Playing all day they cover many Irish hits including many from Irish punk bands The Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly and from folk singer Cahir O’Doherty. Their Irish sound came when they first started to play Maloney’s on St. Patrick’s Day and they were asked to play Irish music. After learning 25 Irish songs and enjoying a successful show, the brothers stuck with the Irish theme. Though they play different genres and venues, their St. Patrick’s Day

show at Maloney’s remains their biggest and most favorite of the year. Though they stick to local shows and venues now, Bobby has played at Warped Tour with a previous band after winning both a contest and a battle of the bands win led to him opening for Yellowcard. Find The Clifton Brothers on Facebook and You Tube.

Colleen Murphy-CistoneBY CLARE MARIE CELANO

Colleen Murphy-Cistone left the world of Wall Street on Sept 11, 2001…and never looked back. “I was working as an administrative assistant for JP Morgan on the 46th floor at 60 Wall Street in 2001. I saw it all. I lost a lot of friends that day,” she says, remembering the tragedies at the World Trade Center when terrorists took down the Twin Towers, killing thousands. “I was done,” she declares.Murphy-Cistone packed up her New York work life and returned to skills learned years before ... bartending. She has employed those abilities ever since. And, Colleen admits proudly, she has no intention of ever going back to the Wall Street lifestyle again. “I want to be close to home,” she says, a desire expressed by many who were witness to the tragedies. “I want to be close to my two kids,” she adds. Both her 16-year-

old and her 10-year-old are involved in sports. “I want to be there for them,” she said, adding that attending school events that her children participate in are important to her. “Once that time goes, it’s gone. You never get it back.” After attending Authentic Bartending Schools of New Jersey in Edison to brush up on new cocktails, she began bartending again in 2003. She took a position at The Pine Tavern in Old Bridge in 2007, a job she loves and one that allows her the flexibility to work and still be close to her family. Murphy-Cistone notes her dad, a retired New York City firefighter, bartended his whole life. She laughs, saying she must have inherited that bartending gene. “I love the job,” she emphasizes. “I love the people I work for and work with. I’m a people-person and well suited to bartending. Here, we work together like a team. We’re truly like a family.” Colleen, who resides in Old Bridge, adds that 15 years on Wall Street, with its frenetic pace and demanding responsibilities prepared her for bartending, where speed and accuracy are important. “On Wall Street, I worked under tremendous pressure with 35 people yelling orders at me all the time,” she recalls. “I learned how to say, ‘I got this.’ I guess I still hear that saying in my ear, ‘time is money.’” Her mantra at work today? “Keep me busy. Keep me

going.” She adds that her Wall Street job required a two-hour commute -- each way. Her job at The Pine Tavern is a two-minute commute. “You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure out which

one is better,” she quips with a grin.

St. Patrick’s Day Parades Elsewhere in USASt. Patrick’s Day parades are an established part of the American culture -- they seem to be the fun line of demarcation be-tween dull, dreary, color-less winter and the very beginnings of spring. No matter which one you may attend, you will be immersed in festivity, camaraderie, and great spirits (both human and alcoholic).

Below are the US’s most widely attended and well known St. Patrick’s Day Parades.

Boston, Massachusetts

As the nation’s arguably most Irish city, Boston is a natural to hold a truly revered St. Patrick’s Day celebration. Since 1901 this parade has become a prominent part of South Boston’s history. This parade is a highlight of the city’s St. Patrick’s Day week and serves as a fine time to take in the festivities and tour a bit of the city, such as the JFK Presidential Library & Mu-seum, or walking the Irish Trail, a three-mile self-guided tour rife with Irish history, and of course, an Irish Pub Crawl. South Boston will hold its parade on Sunday, March 16. Holyoke, a nearby Massachusetts factory town that also has a significantly large Irish population, boasts annual attendance of its St. Patrick’s Day parade at around 300,000 – with more than 25,000 marchers. In 1958, the parade honored John F. Kennedy as its Na-tional Award Winner. This year’s parade is held on Sunday, March 23.

New York City, New YorkConsidered the “biggest and best” St. Patrick’s Day in the world, New York City enjoyed its first such parade way back in 1762. The New York parade each year hosts approximately one-quarter million marchers and two million spectators. Since its inception, the parade is

still escorted by a unit of soldiers; and for the past 154 years or so “The Irish Infantry” Nation-al Guard 69th Regiment has led the Parade up Fifth Avenue, followed by the various Irish so-cieties of the city, the 32 Irish County Societies, as well as vari-ous schools, colleges, Em-erald societies, Irish-language, and national-ist societies. Check it out on March 17.

Chicago, IllinoisThe Downtown Chicago St. Patrick’s Day Pa-rade is always preceded by dyeing the Chi-cago River green, a tradition since 1962. The parade in the Windy City was held every year since 1957 and has been sponsored each year since its inception by The Chicago Journey-man Plumbers Local Union 130. This year, it is held on March 15.

Savannah, GeorgiaThis year’s Parade, the 190th edition, will occur on March 2. In honor of Saint Patrick’s dedication to Christianity, the day begins with the celebration of Mass at the city’s Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. Typically, over 400,000 people will visit Savannah to help celebrate the sec-ond largest Saint Patrick’s Day Parade in the United States. The parade travels through Savannah’s Historic District. It now features a newer tradition, the official “dyeing of the fountains” which happens several days before the parade.

New Orleans, Louisiana Only a month or so after Mardi Gras, the City of New Orleans jumps right back into party mode: its annual St. Patrick’s Day Parades are always enjoyed by families and friends. City streets are festooned with people from various clubs in the city dress in costumes of green who give out flowers, beads, and kisses to lucky parade-goers along the route. There

are actually four parades: Molly’s at the Mar-ket Irish Parade (March 14), Irish Channel Pa-rade (March 15), Metairie Rd. St. Patrick’s Day Parade (March 16), and Downtown Irish Club Parade (March 17).

Seattle, WashingtonSeattle’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade (March 15, this year), the largest and oldest in the Northwest, was recognized by CNN in 2009 as one of the “Five places to get your green on” in America. It travels a one-mile route through the city’s downtown financial and retail core the Sat-urday before St. Patrick’s Day. The city hosts a week-long civic celebration organized by the Irish Heritage Club; festivities include the an-nual Society of the Friends of St. Patrick Din-ner, an Irish Soda Bread Baking Contest, and a Mass for Peace that brings together Catholics and others in a Protestant Church, and the an-nual Irish Week Festival.

St. Croix, US Virgin Islands

The St. Croix St. Patrick’s Day Parade began in 1969 when a group of local businessmen con-vened in Harry’s Office Bar on Queen Cross St. in Christiansted to imbibe and celebrate. The conversation turned to creating a celebration of St. Patrick and thus right then and there the first St. Patrick’s Day Parade was born. A flat-bed truck was commandeered and piano put on top accompanied by the spontaneously organized committee and fellow supporters who were singing Irish songs and saluting shoppers and shop-keepers who joined the streetscape. It was an instant hit. It has be-come an important day for the community, beneficiaries and tourists.

Behind the Footlights

As the Two River Theater observes its 20th anniversary, there is much to celebrate. There is, of course, the structure itself. This imposing

building houses two theaters; a 350-seat main stage and a 99-seat black box (experimental) theater. While the company has been around for almost 20 years, the structure is just now entering its ninth year. Beside the two theaters, there is also a prop shop and production warehouse where all sets are created on location.

The Two River Theater Group was founded in 1994 by Joan and Dr. Robert Rechnitz who sought to establish a professional theater in Monmouth County. While the Count Basie is also a venue for professional entertainers, it has been showcased as more of an amateur production venue. First established at Monmouth University, the company then moved productions to the Algonquin Theater in Manasquan before moving into its own home in Red Bank in 2005. While most of the theaters we’ve highlighted over the past year and a half are both play and entertainment arenas, this Two River is mainly a venue for plays, musicals, readings and of course, education. Naturally,

being located in Red Bank has its perks, so obviously both Bruce Springsteen and Bon Jovi have performed here. Among

the theatrical luminaries who’ve performed here are Olympia Dukakis, the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman, David Hyde Pierce, and Alec Baldwin. There are many more but to say the least, the list is long.

The Two River Theater Group encourages audience knowledge and participation. Forty-five minutes prior to performances is an informative and free pre-show lecture and discussion. After many of the shows an audience “question/answer and general thoughts” symposium is available to anyone wishing to experience an even greater appreciation for the show they’d just seen.

Each season the theater hosts a number of artists’ residencies, workshops and readings to support the development of new work for the American theater.

Each year the education programs and student matinees serve the kids from over 50 schools in the region. Also, as part of its education program is what is referred to as TheaterWorks. This is a program that provides for students in school-based youth services programs to learn about careers in the arts. According to the organization’s website,

“It consists of after-school workshops exploring the various career opportunities in the performing arts and arts administration. Students also participate in monthly workshops at the theater followed by a matinee

performance.

The program c u l m i n a t e s with a career gallery at the school and at Two River, showcasing a career-based project inspired by one of Two River’s productions.”

As with most of the theaters and venues spotlighted in Venues NJ, to truly get a feel of what the Two River Theater has to offer, we encourage you to support it in its efforts to bring arts to people from all walks of life. Attend a play, workshop or reading. Read and learn much more at tworivertheater.org.

On March 1, Bob Tizzy will be performing with members of the Red Bank jazz orchestra for “An Enchanted Evening of Songs from

the Great American Songbook.” Tuzzo will be singing with Tony Corrao and special guest Champian Fulton. This performance is a benefit to support a special “Head-Start” music program for kids from at-risk and challenged communities.

Two on the Aisle

O N B R O A D W A Y For purposes of transparency in advertising, “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical” should probably be titled “Brooklyn Girl.” This renaming would allow theatergoers to know exactly what to expect of the friendly, formulaic bio-musical at the Stephen Sondheim Theater, starring an immensely likable Jessie Mueller. You see, “Brooklyn Girl” — I mean, “Beautiful” — has been modeled with sheepish but cold calculation on “Jersey Boys,” the Broadway megahit that’s been packing ’em in since 2005. In tracing the careers of the pop group the Four Seasons through a parade of their hit singles, “Jersey Boys” demonstrated that you can’t go broke helping AARP members recall the soundtrack of their youths. Like “Jersey Boys,” “Beautiful,” lucidly directed by Marc Bruni with a tracing-paper script by Douglas McGrath, begins (with a much-covered top-40 song) at a pinnacle moment when its subject has become a household name. It then quickly flashes back to said subject’shumble origins in a flavorfully ethnic urbanneighborhood (in this case, Brooklyn). The show proceeds to chart a bumpy road to stardom, song by song by song. There are a few essential differences. For one thing, Ms. King is female, and her evolution as a

A Review

composer and performer, starting in the late 1950s, reflects the particular changes and conflicts forwomen then working in a world of men. There is also only one Ms. King, whereas there were four Seasons, which might seem to limit the range of real-life personalities from which this show’s creators can draw. Ah, but Ms. King started off as a teenage songwriter in the so-called Brill Building era, when Midtown Manhattan officesuites became factories for youth-magnet records. This allows “Beautiful” to cull from the fat list of pop classics written by Ms. King and her young husband, Gerry Goffin, including “Up on theRoof,” “One Fine Day” and the immortal “Will You Love Me Tomorrow?” Helping to swell the song list further is Ms. King and Mr. Goffin’s friendship with theircontemporaries Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, collaborators whose own roster of hits embraces standards like “On Broadway” and “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling.” A suggestion of hangdog self-consciousness hovers over “Beautiful” at such moments. And you can imagine Mr. McGrath (whose work as a moviemaker includes adaptations of “Emma” and “Nicholas Nickleby”) wincing as he created them. Even more annoying is the synthetically slick

interpretations of numbers that were, intheirfirstincarnations, so appealing because of their youthful rawness. These sequences directly evoke the 1981 musical “Dreamgirls” after its title girl group has been made over for mass marketing Motown style. Originality is clearly not this show’s strong suit … with one very important exception. That’s Ms. Mueller, a Broadway star in waiting for several years, whoherestepsconfidentlyintotheV.I.P.roomof musical headliners. Let me qualify that. Much of what makes Ms. Mueller’s performance so touching is its projection of a lackof confidence. There’s humility toMs.Mueller’s Carole, part of whom wants only to be a good Jewish wife and mother, preferably in the suburbs. She plays ego-boosting, self-effacing geisha to Mr. Epstein’s philandering, mentally unstable Gerry. And while this gal knows she can write a popular song, she doesn’t believe she deserves the status that comes with it. Certainly, she doesn’t believe she has it in her to be a solo performer herself. We know that Carole will come into her glorious

own after breaking off from her erratic and dominating husband. She will record the era-defining,best-sellingalbum

“Tapestry,” win a whole lot of Grammys and appear at CarnegieHall, which is wherewe firstmeether,pre-flashbacks. What’s extraordinary is how Ms. Mueller conveys that gradual transformation in every aspect of her performance. This includes most crucially her singing, which evokes Ms. King’s distinctively throaty, ever-yearning voice without mimicry. Most important, you never doubt the intrinsic connection between the singer — a woman we feel we have come to know intimately — and her songs. Modesty is not the usual stuff of Broadway showstoppers. And if “Beautiful” never acquires the flashy momentum of “Jersey Boys,” it maycome in part from the deferential gentleness of its heroine. But when Ms. Mueller sings the show’s title song — sitting at a keyboard in, of course, Carnegie for theproduction’sfinale— shedelivers somethingyou don’t expect from a jukebox musical. That’s a complex, revitalizing portrait of how a very familiar songcameintoexistence, andof thereal, conflictedperson within the reluctant star.

SLAINTE (SLAHN-ch )Health, good health or cheers.

Being timely and relevant, I thought it worth repeating …A Gaelic word meaning “health” originated in Irish and Scottish culture, the spirited exclamation of slainte stems from pride that many people feel in their Irish and Scottish heritage.

In the United States, many people with Scot-Irish heritage like to celebrate it by sprinkling Gaelic words into their celebrations and events. There are numerous circumstances in which slainte may be used. In pubs, slainte is commonly said before drinking or when someone purchases a drink for someone else.

The word slainte used in the name of a pub or establishment implies fellowship, good cheer and friendly association.

Whether you’re Irish, Scottish or “Irish for a day” (St. Patrick’s Day), the meaning behind the word slainte is worth contemplating. As we each go through our daily chores (personal and business), the ability to have and express to others the true values of slainte can brighten the day and “lighten the load.”

In the hospitality business especially, a positive connection with others (customers, staff and vendors) can have a dramatic effect on your business and ultimately, on your bottom line. The fellowship of associates, the pulling together in times of stress, can have a big impact on day-to-day activities.

While perfected by the Irish and Scots, the “attitude of slainte” is a quality that should be practiced by all. Give it a try.
