Kol Mevaser: The Voice of Jewish Studies at CU Boulder
Letter From Our Director,Letter From Our Director,David ShneerDavid Shneer Dear CU Jewish Studies community andfriends, In the summer of2008 I came to CU-Boulder as a seniorhistorian charged withthe task of creating aProgram in JewishStudies. Over thepast seven years, with your help, wehave built a worldclass program thatnow includes a major, two minors, agraduate program, global seminars, and more than 1500 studentstaking our courses each year. The programhas a solid foundation through generous gifts ofan endowed chair, lectureship, fellowships andscholarships. Ongoing donor support togetherwith an investment from the College willcontinue to grow our program. The bottom lineis that the program has been so successfulbecause of the passion and support of CU'sstudents, faculty, staff, administration, and thecommunity. Thank you for your investmentand involvement. I am writing to let you know that as of June 30,2015, I will be stepping down as director ofJewish Studies. I do so now because I feel Ihave accomplished what I was charged to doand with gratitude for the many people, likeyou, who have helped us achieve so manyfirsts for CU. Don't worry. I'm not going very far. After takinga sabbatical, I will be returning to JewishStudies in many different capacities, willcontinue my work teaching and researching inthe Department of History, and am excited toannounce that I will be taking the helm as Chairof the Department of Religious Studies whichhas its own incredible faculty, staff and

students. Jewish Studies and Religious Studies havecollaborated on many projects since 2008including hiring two new tenure-line professorswho are in both units, establishing the Post-Holocaust American Judaism Archive andEmbodied Judaism series, and bringing to theuniversity global seminars to Jerusalem andIstanbul. Therefore, in my new role as chair ofReligious Studies, I look forward to workingwith many of you long into the future.
You will be in very good hands with the incoming director of theProgram in Jewish Studies, Dr. Nan GoodmanDr. Nan Goodman, a professor inthe English department, who is incredibly excited to meet andwork with each one of you. To date, Dr. Goodman's work hasfocused on American literature of the nineteenth century and thecolonial era. Her book in progress, The Puritan Cosmopolis, demonstrates her growing interest in Jewish Studies as sheshows how the Puritans were inspired by their Biblicalpredecessors to envision a new kind of global politicalcommunity. Goodman's future work will be taking her to Turkey, where she will lead the new global seminar to Is tanbulglobal seminar to Is tanbuland where she serves as the founding proponent of what she andothers hope will be a new institute at Boğaziçi Universitydedicated to Jewish Studies, the first of its kind in Turkey and likely in any country with aMuslim majority.
Nan and I are incredibly excited for the next stage of the Program's journey. Together withour incredibly talented and innovative faculty and our enthusiastic and creative students,we will continue to build the program and go from success to success. We are grateful toeach of you for everything you have done to get us to where we are today and what youwill do in the future to continue helping us achieve our goals of making CU's Program inJewish Studies an always dynamic, visionary beacon of learning locally and globally. Sincerely,
David Shneer, PhDDavid Shneer, PhDDirector of the Program in Jewish StudiesLouis P. Singer Endowed Chair in Jewish HistoryProfessor of History and Religious Studies
