Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish 3815 South Cedar Street, Lansing MI 48910 “Preparing to Celebrate these Sacred Mysteries” We lead busy lives. For many of us Sunday Mass is the one time of the week when we are able to slow down long enough to experience the presence of God in a most profound way. In Holy Mass we gather as community to give God thanks and praise. Jesus speaks to us through His Gospel and feeds us with His Body and Blood, not in symbol but in reality. (For more on the Eucharist see page 3 of this bulletin). Nothing on earth compares to this supernatural experience. It is the most important act of worship in the Catholic Church (Lumen Gentium 11). It is for this very reason that I encourage you to intentionally prepare to participate in Holy Mass. I have listed below five steps that will help you do this well. Steps 3 thru 5 address time spent immediately before Mass begins. To aid you in completing these steps, we will keep the bulletins out of sight until after Mass, so you won’t be tempted to pick one up for reading before Mass. Try this out for Lent. I believe you will be pleasantly surprised at the results. Five ways to enhance your Spiritual preparation for Mass: Read the Scriptures (at least the Gospel) that will be proclaimed on Sunday, before you come. You will hear them better when they are proclaimed at Mass. They are listed in the previous week’s bulletin for those of you who don’t have a missal. Reverence: When entering the Church proper, locate the tabernacle and reverence the presence of Christ with a bow or genuflection. Bless yourself with the Holy Water in the Baptismal font as a reminder of your Baptism. Reflect: God has a message for each one of us whenever the Scriptures are proclaimed in Mass. During your quiet time before Mass, ask the Holy Spirit to open your heart and mind to hear the message that God has for you on that particular Sunday. Pray for those around you. Ask God to bless them so that their ears may be opened to his voice as well. Rest: Above all just rest in the presence of the Lord who is in the Tabernacle. Give thanks for the opportunity to celebrate Mass with him. Jesus Through Mary, Thank you for Supporting the Diocesan Services Appeal. See page 6. March 1, 2020

“Preparing to Celebrate these Sacred Mysteries” We lead busy lives.

Five ways to enhance your Spiritual preparation for Mass:

Read the Scriptures (at least the Gospel) that will be proclaimed on Sunday, before you come.

Jesus Through Mary,

THE REAL PRESENCE OF JESUS IN THE EUCHARIST Questions & Answers: Intro & Part 1

Week One: Why does Jesus give Himself to us as food and drink? Jesus gives Himself to us in the Eucharist as spiritual nourishment because He loves us. God’s whole plan for our salvation is directed to our participation in the communion of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, the Trinity. The ultimate promise of the Gospel is that we will share in the life of the Holy Trinity. By eating and drinking the Body and Blood of Christ, we are brought up into the inner life of God through Christ’s humanity, and at the same time united to his divinity. Our sharing in this life begins with our Baptism--when we become adopted daughters and sons of the Father. It is nourished and deepened through our participation in the Eucharist (“whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him” – John 6:56). Sharing in the life is strengthened and increased in Confirmation--where we become temples of the Holy Spirit. We are transformed by being joined to the “source of life” and made holy by the gift of sanctifying grace. In the celebration of the Eucharist (which means “thanksgiving”), we give praise and glory to God for this beautiful gift! Next week: We will explore “Why is the Eucharist not only a meal, but also a sacrifice?” Source: http://usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/the-mass/order-of-mass/liturgy-of-the-eucharist/the-real-presence-of-jesus-christ-in-the-sacrament-of-the-eucharist-basic-questions-and-answers.cfm

The doctrine of the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist is at once both the simplest of truths and most complex of mysteries. Human understanding of this doctrine engages the heart and mind, faith and reason. Throughout the ages, explanation of the Real Presence has drawn the energies of Church scholars and theologians who we recognize today as saints, among them St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Bonaventure, St. John Damascene, St. Cyril, and St. Paul. Belief in the Real Presence is perhaps the distinguishing feature of the Latin and Eastern Catholic Churches.

Christians of other denominations often speak fervently of their personal relationship with Jesus Christ. During Lent, our parish is offering The Ananias Course to strengthen our ability to share the Gospel. Should we not also speak passionately of our ultimate personal relationship with Christ in the Eucharist? Indeed, the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist is at the heart of the answer to “Why be Catholic?” For the next six weeks, the Worship Commission summarizes a series of FAQs about the Real Presence from the U.S. Con-ference of Catholic Bishops. It will deepen and broaden your knowledge of this doctrine that is so essential to Catholicism.

Handing on the

. . . . . . . . FAITH Through the domestic church….with Jen Brown

Exciting Events Happening in Our Parish:

The Parish Survey is available on our website ihmlansing.org/

survey and in paper form in the gathering space or parish office from February 8 through March 1st. The Catholic Leadership Institute has consulted with some of the top leaders in the Catholic world, discovering how to ask questions to help you tell us where you are in your faith and how we can serve you better.

Pope John Paul II said “our Christian communities must become genuine ‘schools’ of prayer”. As a staff we hope we are providing for you but unless we ask you, how do we know? We want YOUR responses. We want to hear from you!

We are offering The Ananias Course

February 29th through March 28th to everyone in the parish. Ananias was the man whom God called on to help Saul come to know Him. Saul, if you recall, was persecuting Christians and God knocked him to the ground and blinded him to get his attention. Ananias was quite nervous to answer God’s call to go and help Saul but he did and Saul became St. Paul, one of the greatest preachers and teachers the Church has ever known. Where would we be without Ananias? Who could you be an Ananias for?

I hear from parishioners very often that they are nervous to share the Gospel with others. They don’t know what to say and are afraid they will say something offensive. I love our parishioner’s sensitivity to where their friends and families are at. The Ananias Course will help you learn where someone is at in their faith journey and how to speak to them in a way that they can respond to your invitation to faith.

This course has been used in parishes all over the country and is a practical, interactive opportunity to learn how to invite your loved ones to know Jesus Christ and his Church. The course is being generously supported by the New Evangelization Grant. You can attend either the Saturday morning times or the Tuesday evening times during each of the 5 weeks. Go to IHMLansing.org/ananias for more information and to register. You can also direct questions to Jen Brown at [email protected] or call 517-393-3030.

Health Ministry News Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the United States and the second leading cause of death from cancers that

affect both men and women. Colorectal cancer affects people in all racial and ethnic groups and is most common in people age 50 and older. The good news? If everyone age 50 and older got regular screenings, 6 out of 10 deaths from colorectal cancer could be prevented. Talk with your health care provider about colon cancer screening.

DSA 2020 “Happy the one who trusts in the Lord.” This scripture text from the Book of Proverbs affirms a fundamental teaching of the Catholic Church– only in God will we find the truth and happiness that we seek, the happiness that we were made for.

Our Diocesan Services Appeal is an opportunity to participate personally in the service and care provided through the many good works of the Catholic Church. DSA contributions are put to

work, right away, in a multitude of ministries and spiritual activities to offer direct assistance to individuals and families, to our parishes and schools.

2020 DSA Prayer Loving and gracious God, we praise you and we thank you for the bountiful gifts that you have bestowed upon us.

Help us to understand that it is only in You that we find the truth and happiness we seek—the happiness we are made for.

Help us to understand and embrace the Diocesan Services Appeal as a way to faithfully participate in the good works of Your Holy Catholic Church.

Please bless our united efforts and help us to see Jesus in all whom we encounter.

Amen

U.S. Census 2020 FAQ’s How do I respond? Most households will receive a letter in the mail before April 1st inviting them to respond online with a unique identification code provided. You can also fill out and mail back a paper questionnaire that will be sent to you if you don’t respond online. If you do not respond at all, individual Census officials will try to contact you by knocking on your door. Do I count my children? Yes. Everyone in the home must be counted even children and babies. The failure to count your children means fewer resources for their education, housing and health care for the next decade. Is the information that I provide confidential? Yes. The U.S. Census Bureau will keep responses to the survey secure and encrypted at all times. Can I respond if I’m not a U.S. citizen? Yes. The U.S. Constitution requires that the Census counts every resident in the United States regardless of their immigration status.

Preschool/Kindergarten Preschool: We are excited to begin the preschool and child care registration process for the 2020/21 school year.
