Cloud Company of the Year? QAD

On July 20, 2016 the Business Intelligence Group, which annually conducts the Stratus Awards for cloud computing, announced that it named QAD as Cloud Company of the Year in the enterprise company category. QAD had come close previously to winning this award, named a finalist in 2015 when QAD’s cloud integration partnerDell Boomi won.

6

Page 7: MARCH 04, 2005 · Web viewTo help Chinese customers understand more about QAD Cloud offerings, on July 15th QAD and Softspeed hosted a Cloud Customer User Day at the Shenzhen Shangri-La

What characteristics earned QAD the award?

Early and Reliable: QAD, compared to other established ERP peers, was early to the cloud, with the QAD Supplier Portal being offered via the cloud in 2003 and the first ERP in the cloud available in 2007. As a result of all that experience, QAD Cloud is proven, reliable and meets a long list of ISO, SSAE and other standards.

Full-featured and manufacturing-specific: QAD Cloud ERP, QAD’s flagship cloud application, is a fully-featured ERP designed to support most global discrete manufacturers, with special editions for the automotive and life sciences industry.

World-class availability: QAD built its own cloud management layer using IoT and big data technologies, resulting in more than 99.9% availability over the past year.

China Speeding Towards the Cloud

To help Chinese customers understand more about QAD Cloud offerings, on July 15th QAD and Softspeed hosted a Cloud Customer User Day at the Shenzhen Shangri-La Hotel. 42 representatives from 20 companies attended. Mr. Kerry Ng, CEO of Softspeed, kicked off the event with a presentation called “Hello Cloud” that introduced QAD’s cloud products. We were then honored to have our customer from DongFeng Honda Parts share their direct experience with QAD Cloud. The lottery and dinner along with the great presentations all contributed to a successful event.

In related news, QAD announced that it has licensed partner Softspeed Consulting Group as a distributor for QAD Cloud ERP in China. Softspeed is now the third authorized QAD Cloud ERP distributor and the first in China. Based in Hong Kong, with regional offices in Guangzhou and Shanghai, Softspeed is QAD’s largest partner in China and has sold QAD on premise solutions for 15 years. It services over 150 QAD customers in the automotive, life sciences, high tech and industrial manufacturing segments. Softspeed will run and manage QAD Cloud ERP in its own data centers and provide related services. QAD audited Softspeed’s cloud capabilities to ensure Softspeed could deliver similar services levels as customers enjoy on the QAD Cloud.

Keep Up with Internationalization

QAD runs what we call the I19 program which is a dedicated, global program that tracks financial compliance requirements in areas such as taxes and financial reporting. QAD’s Danny DeValck runs the I19 program and every quarter Danny produces the Internationalization Journal, a newsletter distributed to Enterprise Edition customers. It reports on recent and upcoming Internationalization developments and how QAD is updating QAD EE to help customers meet evolving requirements.

The Internationalization Journal has become so popular, we decided to share it in EXCELLENCE. Click here to see the latest version and email Danny at [email protected] with any questions.

Learning About Automation Solutions in The Netherlands

QAD hosted an in-depth seminar in The Netherlands on QAD Automation Solutions. Presenters included Astrid Rommens, Practice Director for Automation Solutions at QAD, and Jan Mulder, QAD business consultant.

Excellent QAD Executive Insight: Why the Cloud Now

Tony Winter - CTO, QAD

We are certainly proud of the 2016 Stratus Award for Cloud Company of the Year, but it is not the first and we hope it will not be the last award given to QAD about cloud. We have made serious investments and innovations in QAD Cloud, QAD Cloud ERP and our other cloud-based applications and services. We have re-architected our ERP driven by demand for the cloud, IoT and cloud era user experiences.

Why have we put so much effort into cloud? We are convinced that cloud offers a compelling alternative that improves business outcomes for many if not most of our customers. Many of the pro-cloud and anti-cloud arguments have been around for over a decade now – but the discussion has evolved and we believe in favor of the cloud. Consider the following facts that would have little or no meaning in 2006:

2017 will be QAD’s 10th year offering ERP in the cloud. Today, we manage and support hundreds of customers and tens of thousands of users in the cloud,

including ourselves; we are our own biggest user. Our recent availability has consistently exceeded 99.9%. We have had a highly reliable record in terms of availability and performance. With our focus on continuous

improvement and tight relationship with R&D (DevOps) our offering gets better by the day. We constantly monitor and tune the QAD Cloud, aided by big data analytics and IoT.

COMPETITIVE BITS Epicor Up for Sale Again

Epicor Software is looking for a new owner. According to the Wall Street Journal, Epicor's CEO stated that Epicor’s private equity owners, Apax Partners, are once again looking for suitors. Apax put Epicor on the block just two years ago, reportedly turning down offers around $3B.

Epicor stopped publishing financial results in May, 2015. At that time, Epicor had nearly $1.3B in long term debt – more than its annual revenue. Given its historical struggles with profitability it is unlikely its debt overhang has been reduced significantly. The other ERP vendor with more long term debt than revenue is Infor.

Oracle Loses to HP for $3B, Moody Outlook on ORCL Negative

In a follow-up to recent C-Bits about Oracle’s legal embroilments, last week HPE was awarded $3B in damages due to Oracle’s breach of contract, see HPE wins $3bn in damages from Oracle from ComputerWeekly. In a related 2012 suit, Oracle was ordered to resume support for Itanium-based servers from HP. This follow-up suit specified the damages. Oracle will appeal.

This comes less than a month after another Oracle loss when a court ruled that Google’s use of Java in its Android mobile operating system did not infringe Oracle’s copyright.

Perhaps related, Oracle priced $14B of new debt, see NASDAQ/Zack’s report Oracle Prices Bonds Worth $14B; Moody's Outlook Negative. Moody’s rated the debt A1, an above average rating, but Moody’s changed its outlook on Oracle from stable to negative, “due to concerns pertaining to increased debt balance, which Moody's expects to go beyond $50 billion with the aforementioned issuance of notes.”

Apax Unloads Epicor on KKR

Epicor, recently put up for sale after failing to find a buyer 2 years ago, has reportedly found a buyer. According to the Wall Street Journal, an agreement between Apax Partners and KKR & Co., an American private equity firm, will see Epicor change hands for $3.3 billion.

KKR shared they had been eyeing established software companies for some time, and will buy Epicor for both the attractive price and growth prospects, particularly in the cloud. Uncertainty around Epicor still remains, however, as the acquisition could impact Epicor leadership, headcount, pricing and product development, all of which often change following private equity acquisitions. The deal is scheduled to close in late August.

SAP Response to Nucleus Research

SAP attempted to discredit the scathing report from Nucleus Research shared last week, citing “a wide array of flaws” in the research methodology. SAP highlighted favorable coverage from other analysts and refused further comment. SAP’s response has not satisfied everyone, as this article from an SAP partner concedes that the Nucleus findings should worry SAP.

The author emphasizes that the strong anti-SAP opinions came from SAP references, not select unhappy customers, which strengthens the merit of the Nucleus findings. In addition, a major SAP user group declined to comment on the findings where a rebuttal would have helped SAP’s case. In summary, SAP's response has done little to counteract the results or impact of the report.

Microsoft Combines Cloud Offerings – Kind Of

Microsoft announced Dynamics 365, a “unified cloud product,” that combines app offerings available via the Microsoft Cloud that ostensibly lets customers choose from a menu of services including ERP and CRM. Microsoft

9

Page 10: MARCH 04, 2005 · Web viewTo help Chinese customers understand more about QAD Cloud offerings, on July 15th QAD and Softspeed hosted a Cloud Customer User Day at the Shenzhen Shangri-La

also adds-in its Power BI and Cortana technologies to provide analytics and predictive capabilities. Microsoft is positioning the offering as an alternative to Salesforce.com primarily and has added a related app store.

Under the covers, it appears that the actual products remain unchanged with little to no functional improvement to Dynamics AX, our main competitor out of the Microsoft line-up. For more info see the Dynamics 365 web site and expect to be disappointed at this stage.

A Paradox? Oracle Lays off Hundreds to Boost Cloud Sales

A CRN article reported that Oracle laid off between 225 to 300 members of its North America sales team in June, with channel/sales executives and pre-sales technical team being most affected. Many long tenured executives and consultants were let go. CRN stated that the layoffs were due to, “Co-CEO Mark Hurd's efforts to drive more cloud licensing sales through his direct sales force, with partners focusing on systems integration work.”

Oracle remains under pressure to increase cloud sales. According to the report, “These layoffs support Oracle co-CEO Mark Hurd's plan to boost cloud sales by driving more cloud licensing to direct sales versus channel partners and developing a younger, less expensive staff.”

Mr. Hurd, often referred to as “Chainsaw Mark” in the industry due to his history of making steep personnel cuts, particularly at HP, replaced long time Oracle sales executive Keith Block in 2012. Mr. Block is now vice chairman, president and COO at Salesforce. Oracle is trying to position itself as the alternative to Salesforce as a cloud apps company. On a subscription revenue to total revenue ratio basis, Oracle trails many peers, including QAD and SAP, in the cloud.

Inforum 2016: Infor Update

Infor recently held their annual customer event, Inforum, in New York City on July 10-13. Key updates are as follows:

Services reorganization – Infor has combined support, cloud operations and consulting into one service organization in an attempt to create a more consistent customer experience.

Digital-as-a-Service – Infor's internal design agency will now also work externally as H&L Digital; as consultants to help customers with digital strategy.

The Network – Infor has expanded its focus on the “network,” or ability to connect companies and processes in the supply chain. This renewed focus is supported by the acquisition of GT Nexus last year, now called Infor Commerce Cloud, a supply chain commerce platform.

Infor IoT - Infor announced a new IoT Platform which will collect connected device, sensor and application data for Infor's applications. The company is targeting several industries with Infor IoT, for example using the platform for predictive maintenance in manufacturing.

SAP Announces Q2-FY16 Results

After disappointing Q1 results, SAP’s Q2 for FY16 beat expectations on several fronts. Highlights included (using IFRS except where noted):

Cloud grew 30%. Note that a majority of SAP’s cloud business continues to come from recent acquisitions, such as Concur.

Software licensing and support grew 4% after declining last quarter.  In constant currency, profits were up 2% for the quarter and 5% for 1H-FY2016, though SAP missed

analyst consensus estimates by €0.07. Share prices, however, increased. The number of employees, year over year, is up 7%, something that raised some investors’

eyebrows.

There were significant differences between IFRS and constant currency results due to wide exchange rate fluctuations associated with Brexit. CEO Bill McDermott reiterated the full year outlook. Mr. McDermott stated that SAP added 500 more S/4HANA customers, raising the number to 3700. Many industry watchers believe that few of those S/4HANA “customers” are actually live.

Plex Discovers Microsoft Office and Azure

Plex announced an expanded partnership and related capabilities with Microsoft. See Plex Manufacturing Cloud Connects with Microsoft Office 365. In particular, Plex unveiled a new Azure-hosted dev toolkit it calls the Plex Developer Portal. The toolkit, which includes code samples, documentation and a sandbox, allows customers to build customs by tapping into RESTful APIs of the Plex core product. Plex also unveiled enhanced integration with Office 365. It was not disclosed if Plex would charge for the toolkit or if it would charge for app extensions that tap into Plex hosted data.

It is about time Plex began to discover the value of Office integration, something which QAD has provided for many years, and it is interesting to see Plex offer customers something like QAD ICT. Plex, however, did not cite any related 3rd party services organizations or consultants to help customers with the toolkit. Furthermore, an undisclosed source reported that Plex recently laid off 4% of its workforce and that it will not meet its financial targets to go public; that the next step for Plex is yet another round of venture capital.

Oracle to Acquire NetSuite for $9.3B, Expands Cloud Footprint

Oracle has agreed to buy NetSuite for $9.3 billion in their biggest transaction in over a decade. Oracle co-CEO Mark Hurd said of the long anticipated deal, "Oracle and NetSuite cloud applications are complementary, and will coexist in the marketplace forever. We intend to invest heavily in both products -- engineering and distribution."

The acquisition is contingent on normal regulatory and shareholder approval, which may prove tricky. Notably Oracle Chairman Larry Ellison, who was one of the original founders of NetSuite in 1998, is the largest stockholder with 40% of the stock. The deal represents a significant windfall for him so subsequently there has been some skepticism from those watching the deal.

11

Page 12: MARCH 04, 2005 · Web viewTo help Chinese customers understand more about QAD Cloud offerings, on July 15th QAD and Softspeed hosted a Cloud Customer User Day at the Shenzhen Shangri-La

Anticipating legal challenges, the deal was unanimously approved by a special committee of Oracle's Board of Directors consisting solely of independent directors. While the $9.3B price tag is over twelve times NetSuite's annual revenue from FY15, it is less than some analysts’ valuations. As a result, there is already a legal investigation into the Board of Directors of NetSuite about whether or not they acted in the best interest of the shareholders.

From a broader perspective, to this point Oracle has been unable to truly penetrate the cloud. This acquisition strengthens Oracle's ability to inflate their cloud numbers similar to the way SAP has following their acquisition of Concur. The fact remains that Oracle is still losing its traditional on premise income streams faster than they can replace them.

Financial Issues? Plex Lays Off Entire Vertical Team

Plex has reportedly laid off their entire High Tech and Industrial presales and sales team. It is believed Plex is turning away from this vertical market. The motivation is likely to improve financial performance, as it is believed that Plex has been missing financial targets set by their Private Equity owners. Thanks to Doug Gilkey for this insight!

Our extensive experience with Automotive EDI was very important to winning the deal. Automation Solutions - along with our new Honda Label Printing capability - will be a critical component of the implementation success. CEBOS will be part of a Phase II implementation.

RENOLIT

Vertical: Industrial

Project: Goes Live on QAD EE

Location: Lisbon, Portugal

Customer since: 1993

The RENOLIT Group is an international leader in the manufacture of high-quality plastic films and related products for technical applications. This independent family-owned business, which has been setting benchmarks for quality and innovation for over 65 years, now employs a workforce of approximately 4,500 employees at more than 30 production sites and sales entities.

15

Page 16: MARCH 04, 2005 · Web viewTo help Chinese customers understand more about QAD Cloud offerings, on July 15th QAD and Softspeed hosted a Cloud Customer User Day at the Shenzhen Shangri-La

RENOLIT thermoplastic films provide furniture, building components and consumer electronics with a decorative surface finish, they seal roofs, underground structures and line swimming pools. The company also produces films and tubes for medical applications and recyclable composite panels incorporating natural fibres for the building sector and automotive industry.

RENOLIT have a dual ERP strategy, with both QAD and SAP deployed in various divisions. The latest site to go live on the RENOLIT core model is UNIPESSOAL lda, a small sales and distribution site in Lisbon, Portugal.

This site migrated from version MFG/Pro 8.6e to QAD EE 2014 and integrated themselves to the same environment as the rest of RENOLIT's QAD sites. The project was challenging due a number of statutory requirements to achieve Portuguese certification (shipments & invoices) as well as the implementation of Saft v 1.3. All of this has been made possible thanks to the efforts of our I19 team.

Although only a small site this project was vital in the wider RENOLIT ERP ecosystem as it is the first sales unit of Renolit to deploy QAD rather than migrating to SAP Business One.

What's Next: RENOLIT are looking at implementing QAD in 5 additional Chinese sites in 2017, the Deployment QScan is currently underway. Thanks to the exceptionally smooth project in Portugal and sterling work from QAD Support RENOLIT are considering deploying their next 6 sites simultaneously. Stay tuned!

APOTEX

Vertical: Life Sciences

Project: Goes Live on QAD 2014 EE

Location: Leiden, Netherlands

Customer since: 2000

Apotex Inc. is an independent, dynamic, Canadian pharmaceutical company committed to R&D, manufacturing and distributing a broad range of high-quality, affordable medicines to patients, healthcare providers, payers and governments worldwide.

The worldwide sales of the Apotex Group exceeds $2 billion (Canadian $) per year and the company employs over 5,500 people around the globe.

Apotex Netherlands is the Dutch subsidiary of the group and was acquired in 2004. Today, the Dutch operation manufactures, markets and sells a broad product portfolio of Rx medicines and OTC products.

16

Page 17: MARCH 04, 2005 · Web viewTo help Chinese customers understand more about QAD Cloud offerings, on July 15th QAD and Softspeed hosted a Cloud Customer User Day at the Shenzhen Shangri-La

Apotex Netherlands had used QAD since 2002, prior to being acquired. However, due to their new parent group's strategy of SAP as their global standard they were prohibited from spending any money on their QAD solution. Two years ago the Dutch site started the first phase of a SAP implementation but surprisingly this was cancelled due to the very high cost of the first phase of the project.

This gave the QAD team an opportunity to position an upgrade to QAD Enterprise Edition. They quickly engaged with the Apotex local management, who favored keeping QAD, and established a business case for the upgrade to Enterprise Edition.

In September 2014 Apotex Netherlands started the project with the development of an upgrade blueprint and engaged QAD services to work with their internal team.

In January 2015 they received the green light from their Canadian HQ to continue with the project and approval for the associated investment. The project saw Apotex buy up to the Unified Bundle, deploy QAD WMS and the Validation Toolkit whilst migrating to QAD Enterprise Applications 2014 EE.

Now Apotex is live! All project milestones have been achieved and the Go Live date didn't change during the whole project!

What's Next: Apotex wants to start utilising all the improvements from the upgrade. They will then take a closer look at other QAD solutions that fell outside of the scope of the upgrade project.

Educational services are offered through their distributor networks that specialise in the pre-hospital, hospital, occupational health, education, industrial, law enforcement, and school markets.

Laerdal Medical A/S was founded in 1940 and is headquartered in Stavanger, Norway. The company is still family owned. The group has four key manufacturing locations - Stavanger, Norway; Tokyo, Japan; Texas, US; and Shanghai, China. The group supports their partners through a network of 26 sales and distribution offices in 22 countries worldwide. The company employs over 1400 people across the globe.

Laerdal opted to move to the cloud a few years ago and are now running their entire global business on QAD Cloud ERP.

As part of the wider ERP project Laerdal also re-architected their complex EDI structure and moved to QAD Cloud EDI. The first phase of the EDI project saw the company re-architect their inbound and outbound messages, whilst phase 2 saw Laerdal implement QAD's new bank drivers.

It was always Laerdal's intent to extend their EDI functionality to allow their key suppliers to collaborate more effectively with their plants. The QAD EDI team worked diligently with the Laerdal team to plan this additional project and delivered a detailed scoping document earlier this month.

What's Next: Laerdal are one of our better Cloud references and are in the process of deploying QAD Cloud DSCP for their Demand Planning requirements. They will also look to extend their collaborative EDI footprint to their customers and major distributors as the next phase of the project.

After more than 70 years of leadership in the field of producing plastic and metal components for the mechanical engineering industry, Elesa has earned the status of reference point for designers and builders.

More than 20,000 product-specific codes for an annual production of tens of millions of pieces; more than 150 patents registered worldwide; 31 international awards in Industrial Design; ISO 9001 certification attained in 1993, ISO 14001 in 2007 and the more recent BSOHSAS 18001 - October 2012. These are some of the figures that encapsulate their business.

The group employ 350 employees around the globe with headquarters in Monza, Italy and additional sites in France, UK, Austria, Spain, Poland, US and Sweden plus additional 3 sales offices in the Czech Republic, China and India.

Elesa SpA has been a QAD customer since 1997 and in 2013 they upgraded to Enterprise Edition. During the upgrade they centralised their French and Italian instances onto a single server.

With a stated plan to increase the control of their subsidiaries and to share common policies and best practise, Elesa SpA decided to extend the usage of QAD to their US site based in Twinsburg, OH.

To support this initiative the QAD Italy team, together with QAD colleagues from the US ran a detailed implementation QScan to define the perimeter and scope of the project. Elesa were very impressed by our internal cooperation and QAD's ability to engage teams and share resources worldwide.

Elesa US is a sales and distribution site that uses external agents to cover the US territory, and thanks to the excellent work by Oyku Asikoglu, we convinced Elesa to provide their sales agents with QAD's Customer Relationship Management module that will also be shortly implemented at Elesa France.

What's Next: Elesa are currently discussing a number of other topics with the QAD team including QAD Automation Solutions, QAD DSCP for their Demand Planning requirements and our Lean Manufacturing module to improve their manufacturing effectiveness. Stay tuned!

Project: Go Live on QAD 2014 EE

Location:  Godollo, Hungary

Customer since: 1994

Lear Corporation is ranked #154 on the Fortune 500 with world-class products designed, engineered and manufactured by a diverse team of talented employees. As a leading supplier of automotive seating and electrical, Lear serves its customers with global capabilities while maintaining individual commitment.

With headquarters in Southfield, Michigan, Lear maintains 240 locations in 36 countries around the globe and employs approximately 136,000 employees. In 2015, Lear's total sales were a record $18.2 billion, with 77% in the Seating segment and 23% in the Electrical segment. Lear is traded under the symbol [LEA] on the New York Stock Exchange.

Lear's site in Godollo, Hungary had used QAD for some time and was running a customised version of MFG/Pro eB2. The Hungarian site was a large facility with over 400 users as well as utilising QAD self billing and Eagle RF as part of the in site QAD solution.

Due to the importance of the Hungarian site Lear had earmarked it as a priority to migrate to the Lear Core model based on QAD 2014 EE.

This was a challenging project due to the upgrade of the self billing module and the interface to Eagle RF Express.

Thanks to the efforts of the Lear consulting team and the QAD EDI team these issues were solved and the Godollo site has successfully gone live on QAD Enterprise Applications 2014 EE.

What's Next: Lear will continue to migrate both existing QAD and new non QAD sites onto their global core model as QAD becomes the ERP of choice for this multinational Tier 1 automotive supplier. Stay tuned!

Project: QAD DSCP Order

Location:  Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

Saudi Dairy & Foodstuff Company (SADAFCO) has long been a leader in the UHT (Long Life) Milk market in Saudi Arabia, with the Saudi brand capturing more than half of the long-life milk market and almost a third of total milk market in the region.

In addition to UHT milk, the company also manufactures tomato paste, ice cream, snacks and drinks, with Saudia Tomato Paste also enjoying the status of market leader. During the past two years SADAFCO has expanded its product range with new launches in the breakfast cream, cheese, butter, powdered milk, ketchup, fortified children’s milk and frozen French fries categories. SADAFCO’s network consists of 3 manufacturing sites and 25 distribution centres.

The DSCP Journey

In January 2015 we were introduced to SADAFCO by Tim Conlon following a number of meetings which revealed a requirement for improved S&OP in the business. SADAFCO were not mature in this area but had recruited an ex Mars UK senior supply chain manager to bring about improvement. He brought with him system experience but this was SAP based.

SADAFCO’s initial interest was S&OP, Demand Planning and DRP but following an excellent initial pre-sales phase we were able to increase this to all 4 DSCP modules (Demand Planning, Distribution Planning, Production Planning & Procurement Planning).

We agreed with SADAFCO’s Supply Chain Director that he would approach the board for funding for all project phases and we supported this by helping him develop the business case for the project.

In June of this year we delivered onsite scoping workshops and a QScan. This also helped to further cement the relationship with the SADAFCO team as well as establishing the scope for the initial project.

The final step was to negotiate legal and commercial terms which were challenging due to the requirements of trading with Saudi companies. Tim Conlon's skills once again came into play here, ensuring his partner in the region, Abdulla Fouad helped us with the final transaction.

Why QAD DSCP Demand Planning?

SADAFCO selected the QAD DSCP solution suite for several reasons:

The business case and return on investment was strong DSCP provides a fully integrated suite of modules that work together in real-time. They liked the way we consulted with them during the sales cycle and worked jointly as one team DSCP is integrated into their QAD ERP system and has the ability to integrate easily into their van

scheduling system
