Important Safety InstructionsREAD BEFORE OPERATING EQUIPMENT

This product was designed and manufactured to meet strict qualityand safety standards. There are, however, some installation andoperation precautions which you should be particularly aware of.

1. Read Instructions – All the safety and operating instructionsshould be read before the product is operated.

2. Retain Instructions – The safety and operating instructionsshould be retained for future reference.

3. Heed Warnings – All warnings on the product and in theoperating instructions should be adhered to.

4. Follow Instructions – All operating and use instructions shouldbe followed.

5. Cleaning – Unplug this product from the wall outlet beforecleaning. Do not use liquid or aerosol cleaners. Use a dampcloth for cleaning.

6. Attachments – Do not use attachments not recommended bythe product manufacturer as they may cause hazards.

7. Water and Moisture – Do not use this product near water–forexample, near a bath tub, wash bowl, kitchen sink, laundry tub,swimming pool, in a wet basement, and the like.

8. Accessories – Do not place this product on an unstable cart,stand, tripod, bracket, or table. The product may fall, causingserious injury to a child or adult, and serious damage to theproduct. Use only with a cart, stand, tripod, bracket or tablerecommended by the manufacturer, or sold with the product.Any mounting of the product should follow the manufacturer'sinstructions, and should use a mounting accessoryrecommended by the manufacturer.

9. A product and cart combinationshould be moved with care. Quickstops, excessive force, anduneven surfaces may cause theproduct and cart combination tooverturn.

10. Ventilation – Slots and openings inthe cabinet are provided forventilation and to ensure reliableoperation of the product and toprotect it from overheating. Theseopenings must not be blocked or covered. The openings shouldnever be blocked by placing the product on a bed, sofa, rug, orother similar surface. This product should not be placed in abuilt-in installation such as a bookcase or rack unless properventilation is provided or the manufacturer's instructions havebeen adhered to.

11. Power Sources – This product should be operated only from thetype of power source indicated on the marking label. If you arenot sure of the type of power supply to your home, consult yourproduct dealer or local power company. For products intendedto operate from battery power or other sources, refer to theoperating instructions.

12. Power Cord Protection – Power supply cords should be routedso that they are not likely to be walked on or pinched by itemsplaced upon or against them, paying particular attention tocords at plugs, convenience receptacles, and the point wherethey exit from the product.

13. Protective Attachment Plug – The product is equipped with anattachment plug having overload protection. This is a safetyfeature. See Instruction Manual for replacement or resetting ofprotective device. If replacement of the plug is required, be surethe service technician has used a replacement plug specifiedby the manufacturer that has the same overload protection asthe original plug.

14. Outdoor Antenna Grounding – If an outside antenna or cablesystem is connected to the product, be sure the antenna orcable system is grounded so as to provide some protectionagainst voltage surges and built-up static charges. Article 810of the National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA 70, providesinformation with regard to proper grounding of the mast andsupporting structure, grounding of the lead-in wire to anantenna discharge unit, size of grounding conductors, locationof antenna-discharge unit, connection to grounding electrodes,and requirements for the grounding electrode. See Figure 1.

15. Lightning – Lightning – Unplug the unit from the wall outlet anddisconnect the antenna or cable system for added protectionduring a lightning storm or when it is left unattended andunused for long periods of time. This will prevent damage to theproduct due to lightning and power line surges.

16. Power Lines – An outside antenna system should not belocated in the vicinity of overhead power lines or other electriclight or power circuits, or where it can fall into such power linesor circuits. When installing an outside antenna system, extremecare should be taken to keep from touching such power lines orcircuits as contact with them might be fatal.

17. Overloading – Do not overload wall outlets, extension cords, orintegral convenience receptacles as this can result in a risk offire or electric shock.

18. Object and Liquid Entry – Never push objects of any kind intothis product through openings as they may touch dangerousvoltage points or short-out parts that could result in a fire orelectric shock. Never spill liquid of any kind on the product.

19. Servicing – Do not attempt to service this product yourself asopening or removing covers may expose you to dangerousvoltage or other hazards. Refer all servicing to qualified servicepersonnel.

20. Damage Requiring Service – Unplug this product from the walloutlet and refer servicing to qualified service personnel underthe following conditions:

a. When the power supply cord or plug is damaged.

b. If liquid has been spilled, or objects have fallen into the product.

c. If the product has been exposed to rain or water.

d. If the product does not operate normally by following theoperating instructions. Adjust only those controls that arecovered by the operating instructions, as an improperadjustment of other controls may result in damage and will oftenrequire extensive work by a qualified technician to restore theproduct to its normal operation.

e. If the product has been dropped or damaged in any way, and

21. Replacement Parts – When replacement parts are required, besure the service technician has used replacement partsspecified by the manufacturer or have the same characteristicsas the original part. Unauthorized substitutions may result infire, electric shock, or other hazards.

22. Safety Check – Upon completion of any service or repairs tothis product, ask the service technician to perform safetychecks to determine that the product is in proper operatingcondition.

23. Wall or Ceiling Mounting – The product should be mounted to awall or ceiling only as recommended by the manufacturer.

24. Heat – The product should be situated away from heat sourcessuch as radiators, heat registers, stoves, or other products(including amplifiers) that produce heat.

Quick Start Detailed Instructions

The PMD670 comes factory preset for recording voiceusing its built-in (internal) microphone. These aresettings for recording a meeting, not settings forrecording a vocal performance. Quick Start ignoresyour changing any of these presets, it even ignoresinstalling batteries.

IntroductionThank you for selecting the Marantz ProfessionalPMD670 Portable Solid State Recorder. ThePMD670 is an audio recorder that records indigital audio formats onto a Compact Flash™memory card (CF card) or Microdrive™.

Compact flash memory cards, also used in digitalcameras, are widely available at consumerelectronics retailers and computer resellers.

Audio inputs may be from:• the built-in microphone,• condenser or dynamic microphone(s) con-

nected to the XLR jacks,• line level audio sources connected to the

LINE IN jacks, or• digital audio sources in SP/DIF format con-

nected to the DIGITAL IN jack.

Audio outputs may be from:• the built-in speaker,• headphones connected to the PHONES jack,• analog audio devices such as an amplifier or

other device connected to the LINE OUTjacks, and/or

• digital audio devices using SP/DIF formatconnected to the DIGITAL OUT jack.

Computer compatibleThe PMD670 records directly onto CF cards.Recordings can be transferred to your desktop orlaptop computer by removing the CF card fromthe PMD670 or by using the supplied cable toconnect the PMD670 to your computer via the I/Oport. Audio recorded in the popular MP3 com-pression format is directly available for intranet orinternet file sharing.

Voice recordingThe PMD670 has several helpful features forvoice recording in situations such as meetings,conferences or other events.

• Use less memory (longer recording time)For voice recording the recording quality level(bit rate recorded and/or sampling frequency)can be set to the lowest levels permitting moretime recorded on the CF card.

• Easy to use for recordingOne control begins recording. Simply slide andrelease the red REC switch.

• Security – Input settingsAfter you have set up the input settings* foryour application the settings can be set to ONwith the INPUT LOCK switch.

As an added precaution the input settingswitches (including the ability to change inputdevices) can be protected with the suppliedscrew-on cover preventing unintentionalchanges.

*Settings for recording meetings for example,will usually be the same from meeting to meet-ing.

• Security – CF cardsFor added security the CF card compartmentdoor can be secured with a screw. This isespecially recommended if you transfer audiofiles via the I/O cable.

Playback aidsA common problem with lengthy voice or otherrecordings is difficulty in locating one or morespecific passages for playback. The PMD670 hasseveral ways to mark or tag specific recordstarting points.

• Date and timeA built-in date and time generator marks thebeginning of each track.

• TracksA new track (file) is automatically started eachtime recording is stopped using the STOPbutton.

• Automatic recordingThe PMD670 can be set to stop recordingwhen there is silence (Silent Skip) and auto-matically start when sound resumes. ThePMD670 can be set to automatically add anEDL mark to the track at each such startingpoint.

• EDL marks*EDL (Edit Decision List) marks can be createdduring recording manually or automatically.EDL marks help you find those specific pointsin the recording.

*The EDL marking system is proprietary to MarantzProfessional solid state recorders.

• During playback you can search for EDLmarks in forward or reverse.

• You can change an EDL mark into a skipmark or an A-B repeating point. That lets youcreate custom playback sequences whichinclude skipping audio between EDL marksor repeating audio between EDL marks.

• Up to 255 EDL marks can be added to a CFcard. EDL marks are numbered consecu-tively starting at one. During recording youcan manually add an EDL mark by pressingMARK. EDL marks can be added automati-cally, for example at the beginning of eachtrack.

ON: During record, a pause (pushing the RECPAUSE button) adds an EDL mark to the track.During record an EDL mark is added to the trackif a remote device (plugged into the REMOTEjack) is used to pause recording.

OFF: Pausing during record does not add an EDLmark to the track.

6. PRE REC switchLets you turn off prerecord cache if it is notdesired.

When power is on the PMD670 is constantlysaving 2 seconds of audio input. This is calledpre record cache. When recording is started bysliding the REC switch, or resumed from RECPAUSE by sliding the REC switch the pre-re-corded 2 seconds is recorded.

OFF: Turns the 2 second pre-record cache off.

ON: Leaves the 2 second pre-record cache on.

8. ANALOG OUT switchSelects the audio outputchannel for playback.

Applies to playback output to LINE OUT, andInternal speaker or headphones.

L: Audio recorded on the Left channel is output toboth the left and right output channels.

If the recording is dual level mono (a mono inputwas recorded onto both the right and left channels)the L setting outputs the left audio at a normallevel while the right is reduced -15dB.

STEREO: Audio recorded on the Left channel isoutput to the left output channel, and audio re-corded on the Right channel is output to the rightoutput channel. Both channels are output to theinternal speaker.

R: Audio recorded on the Right stereo channel isoutput to both the left and right output channels.

Factory default: ANALOG OUT switch at STEREO.

9. MIC ATTEN switchThe microphone attenuationswitch permits the direct useof microphones that differ insensitivity.

0dB: No microphone attenuation.

-20dB: Input from a microphone(s) connected tothe XLR MIC IN jacks is cut by -20dB.

Factory default: MIC ATTEN switch at 0dB.

10. REPEAT switchSINGLEOFF ALL

REPEAT

Lets you endlessly repeatplayback of a track or entirememory card.

OFF: No repeat.

SINGLE: During playback the current track isrepeated. When playback reaches the end of thetrack it automatically starts playback from thebeginning of that track.

ALL: During playback all tracks are repeated.When playback reaches the end of the last trackit automatically starts playback from the begin-ning of the first track.

Factory default: REPEAT switch at OFF.

11. ANC switchThe ANC (Ambient NoiseCancel) switch lets youchoose to reduce ambi-

ent noise before recording on the internal micro-phone or MIC inputs.

Ambient Noise Cancel positions do not changethe memory used in recording. Examples of lowambient noise sources include: traffic, air condi-tioning hum, and wind noise.

Band pass position reduces the lows andhighs and passes (records) the center (voicelevel) audio frequencies. This reduces the record-ing of high and low frequency ambient noise.

FLAT: No filtering applied.

High pass position reduces low frequencyambient noise only.

US default: ANC switch at Band pass .Europe default: ANC switch at FLAT.

12. EDL PLAY switchThe EDL PLAY switchturns EDL PLAY off or on.

OFF: When the EDL PLAY switch is at OFFPMD670 playback does not respond to EDLmark instructions.

ON: When EDL PLAY is ON PMD670 playbackfollows EDL mark instructions regarding play-back order, skipping sections of recording on thememory card, or repeating a section of record-ing on the memory card.

Note: If the EDL PLAY switch is at ON and thereare no EDL marks on the CF card (recordingwas done with the AUTO MARK switch at OFF)playback is not available. Switch to OFF forplayback.

Factory default: EDL PLAY switch at OFF.

13. LEVEL CONT. switchThe LEVEL CONT(rol)switch lets you select thetype of input level control.

MANUAL: At MANUAL you control the input levelwith the REC LEVEL controls.

LIMITER: At LIMITER peak sound levels thatwould distort the recording are limited.

ALC: At ALC (Automatic Level Control = Auto-matic Gain Control) the PMD670 automaticallyresponds to changes in input level. If recording isquiet the input level is increased. If recording isloud the input level is decreased. This is a desirablefeature when recording a meeting with severalspeakers, because a speaker close to the micro-phone and/or with a loud voice will be automaticallyrecorded at a reduced level and a quiet speakerwill be recorded at an increased level and is lesslikely to have their input missed.

ALC is usually not desired when recording music(voice or instrument) because the transitions ininput level may be audible in the recording, andcan make the recording ‘hissy’ by raising the levelduring quiet passages and recording ambientnoise.

The REC LEVEL controls do not work when theLEVEL CONT. switch is set at ALC.

14. INPUT buttonThe INPUT button lets youselect the audio input andaudio channels for record-ing.

What the input selections do:

Selects the input device(s) and channelsThe input selection chooses which input(s) thePMD670 is using for recording and how manychannels are recorded.

Selects the recording (file) parametersThe input selection also determines which set ofalgorithm/file parameters are used (stereo file,mono file, or digital file).

Recording (file) parameters:

stereo (recorded as a stereo file): stereo withLINE input, stereo with MIC input, DLmono withMIC input.

mono (recorded as a mono file): mono with INTMIC input, mono with LINE input, LR mono withLINE input, mono with MIC input, LRmono withMIC input.

digital (recorded as a digital file): DIGITAL INinput.

The default algorithm/file parameters are:

stereo file: MP2, 48kHz sample frequency,128kbps per channel, and file extension .mpg.

mono file: MP3, 44.1kHz sample frequency,32kbps, and file extension .mp3.

digital file: MP2, 44.1kHz or 48kHz samplefrequency (dependent on input source rather thandefault or PMD670 menu selection), 128kbps,and file extension .mpg.

Via the Algor/File Menu choice, the algorithm/fileparameters for stereo, mono or digital files can bechanged. See Algor/File Menu choice on page29.

Edit functions: editing EDL Marks to createcustom playback sequences, erasing and renum-bering Tracks, and formatting the CF card.

Custom playback sequencesEDL Marks are numbered consecutively from 001and automatically renumbered when an EDLMark is added or erased. Playback is also con-secutive from the point that playback begins.

EDL Mark custom playback can:

Skip playback from the beginning of a 'Skip' EDLMark to the beginning of the next EDL Mark.

A-B loop from a 'Loop_A' EDL Mark to a 'Loop_B'EDL Mark.

Note: EDL Marks are not automatically placed atthe beginning of tracks. If you want your customplayback sequence to include track beginningpoints add EDL Marks to coincide with trackbeginning points by:a. Start playback by pressing and releasing

PLAY/Pause and then pause playback bypressing and releasing PLAY/Pause again.

b. Press and release TRACK JUMP forward or TRACK JUMP reverse until the desiredtrack number is displayed.

c. Press and release the MARK/ EDIT button.

Editing EDL Marks:

All EDL Marks are initially entered as 'Point'marks.

From Stop display the EDL Mark by pressing andreleasing the Mark forward button (18) or Markreverse button (16) to tab through the EDL markson the CF card.

When the EDL mark to be edited is displayedpress and release the MARK/ EDIT button. Thecurrent EDL Mark type will be flashing.

Exampledisplay.

SkipAn EDL Mark changed to 'Skip' will be skippedduring EDL playback (playback with EDL PLAYswitch at ON). Playback will skip to the beginningof the next EDL Mark.

A skipped EDL recording is not erased. Therecording is still on the CF card. The skipped EDLrecording will play if the EDL PLAY switch is atOFF. You can change the type later.

EDL A-B loopingTo playback an EDL A-B loop press the PLAY/PAUSE button to begin playback then pressand release the A-B REPEAT button.

If there is an error, for example there is an EDLMark of type Loop_A but no EDL Mark of typeLoop_B an error message is displayed.

Only one EDL A-B loop can programmed. Whena 'Loop_A' or 'Loop_B' exists on a CF card andanother is created the old mark automaticallychanges to a 'Skip'.

EraseWhen an EDL mark is erased the remaining EDLmarks are automatically renumbered from 1through the number of EDL marks on the CFcard.

How to renumber tracksIf you have erased tracks from the CF card it iseasier to locate recordings if the tracks arerenumbered.

From stop press and hold the MARK/ EDITbutton for about 2 seconds to enter Edit mode.

Renumber flash-ing in the display.

While Renumber is flashing (5 seconds) pressand release the ENTER button . (Or pressand release the STOP button to cancel.)

EXECUTING will be displayed and the percent-age executing will increase to 100%.

100% done will be displayed momentarily. Thenthe PMD670 and the display will return to stopmode.

The CF card formats used by the PMD670 areWindows compatible. You can copy audio filesusing a Windows compatible computer* that canread a CF card or be connected via the I/O port.

*Or a Macintosh computer that can recognizeWindows compatible removable drives.

CF cards with less than 2 GB capacity are auto-matically formatted FAT16 (FAT = File AllocationTable).

CF cards with 2 - 8 GB capacity are automaticallyformatted FAT32.

The maximum CF card that can be formatted inthe PMD670 is 8 GB. If larger cards are usedplease format in your computer.

During play pause, press and hold the -/REWbutton or the FWD/+ button to rewind orfast forward quickly. The rewind or fast forward isat 10X speed for three seconds, then automati-cally speeds up to 140X speed.

Notes:If the -/REW button or the FWD/+ button is held past the beginning or end of a track therewind or fast forward will continue onto theprevious or next track.If REPEAT SINGLE or REPEAT ALL is on, therewind or fast forward will follow the repeat order.Does not function in EDL playback or EDL A-Brepeat.

A.Cue – Turn the Auto Cue feature on or off, setthe number of milli-seconds the dB level mustmeet or exceed the set threshold, and set the dBthreshold level.

S.Play – Turn the single track play feature on oroff.

Beep – Turn the beep on or off.

A.PowOff – Enable or disable the AutomaticPower Off feature.

Batt_Type – Set the battery type.

RemoteMode – Set the effect of the optionalwired remote switch.

ID1 – Set the description ID code for broadcastwave file recordings.

ID2 – Set the origin ID code for broadcast wavefile recordings.

ID3 – Set the origin reference ID code for broad-cast wave file recordings.

Default – Reset all Menu settings to factorydefault settings.

How to set or change the Date and timeThe date and time are written on each audiotrack (file) when the track is started. When anaudio track is viewed on a computer this dateand time appears as when the file was 'modified'.(US date format is illustrated.)

1. From stop, press and hold the MENU/STORE button for about 2 seconds. MENUwill appear (flashing) in the display.

How to set or change the Date FormThe date form is the date order month/day/year orday/month/year.

The US default is M/D/Y (month/day/year).The Europe default is D/M/Y (day/month/year).

Algor/FileThe PMD670 can record in a variety of compres-sion algorithm, associated bit rate, file format, andrecording type (channels recorded) parameters.See explanations below and chart in right column.

First select your input device (internal micro-phone, microphone(s), Line in, or digital input).

Second select your input channel choice with theINPUT button, see page 17.

Recording TypeThe recording type can be stereo (two channelsof recording) mono (one channel of recording) ordigital. This is set by your choice of input deviceand input channel choice.

AlgorithmThe PMD670 can record using three methods twoof which are compression algorithms: PCM, MP3,and MP2.

PCM (Pulse Code Modulation) isuncompressed. These are high quality audiofiles used in the recording industry. For ex-ample, for recording CD quality music. PMDEdit and other professional level computerapplications are available for computer process-ing of PCM files.

MP3 (MPEG1 Layer III) is highly compressed,and creates relatively small files that are com-monly used to transfer files on the internet.

MP2 (MPEG1 Layer II) is a compressed fileformat that is commonly used in broadcasting.MP2 audio is a higher quality than MP3. This isespecially useful when lower bitrates are used.If you are a news reporter you will probablywant to record in MP2 format using the .bwfextension.

Sample FrequencySample frequency is measured in kHz (kiloHertz). The sample frequency is the number ofsamples of the audio wave(s) per second. Forexample, the PMD670 can record PCM at 48 kHzthat is 48,000 samples per second.

Bit RateThe bit rate for PCM is constant at 768kbps/ch.MP2 and MP3 can be recorded at a number ofdifferent bit rates.

File FormatThe file format (3 character computer file exten-sion) might be .wav, .bwf, .mpg or .mp3. Broad-cast Wave Files (.bwf) include identification codesin the file header.

How to set or change the Algor/File parameterdefaults.

The Chart of Algorithm/File Parameters reflectsthe menu setting procedure of those parameters.The factory defaults are circled.

1. Select the Algor/File menu choice:

Other menu choices:

Manual track incrementing.

When Manual track incrementing is on, duringrecording slide and release the REC switch toincrement the track. A new track is created at thatpoint. There is no break in recording. WhenManual track incrementing is off, sliding andreleasing REC switch during recording doesnothing.

Default setting is On.

1. Select the M. Track menu choice:

Silent Skip.Silent skip automatically pauses recording whenthere is a period of silence and continues record-ing when sound resumes. Silent Skip looks forsound below a preset level for a preset period oftime. When that occurs the PMD670 switches torecord pause. When a signal of about -30 dB isinput recording resumes.

For example, if you are both the recorder andmaster of ceremonies for an event, you canpreset the PMD670 for recording and automati-cally start recording when you start speaking intothe microphone.

When the AUTO MARK switch is at ON resump-tion of recording after a record pause by SilentSkip adds an EDL mark.

Default settings are Off, 03 seconds, and -40 dB.

1. Select the S.Skip menu choice:

a. From stop, press and hold the MENUbutton for about 2 seconds. MENU willappear (flashing) in the display.


2. Press and release the FWD/+ button repeatedly until S.Skip is displayed andflashing.

3. Press and release the ENTER button toaccept the S.Skip choice and switch to On orOff.

4. Press and release the FWD/+ button orthe -/REW button to toggle between ONand OFF.

5. When correct Press and release the ENTERbutton to switch to set or change sec-onds.

6. Press and release the FWD/+ button orthe -/REW button to change the numberof seconds of silence. The range is 1 to 5.

8. Press and release the FWD/+ button orthe -/REW button to change the (-dB)decibel threshold level. The range is 20 to 60in 5 dB increments.

Auto CueAuto Cue skips the silence at the beginning of anaudio track and pauses playback at the pointwhere the sound is loud enough for long enough.You can adjust how loud (how many dB) and howlong (milliseconds) the audio has to be beforeplayback is cued.

If S.Play is selected (see next page), when theend of the track is reached Auto Cue pausesplayback cued to the sound of the next track.

Default settings are Off, 20 milliseconds, and -40dB.

1. Select the A.Cue menu choice:

Single PlayDuring playback, when Single Play and Auto Cueare Off, and the end of a track is reached thenext track automatically starts playing.

During playback, when Single Play is On, andthe end of a track is reached the PMD670 auto-matically pauses. This differs from Auto Cue inthat Single Play does not cue to start of audio.

Default is S.Play Off.

1. Select the S.Play menu choice:

BeepWhen battery charge can provide no more than1-3 minutes of recording or playback and Beep isset to On, the battery indicator will flash, the RECindicator will flash and the PMD670 will beep.

If the PMD670 is not operated for 30 minutesduring stop or play pause, power can be auto-matically shut off to conserve battery life. (SeeA.PowOFF next page.) If A.PowOFF is set to Y,and Beep is set to ON, the PMD670 will beep toalert you that the power is shutting off.

Default is Beep On.

1. Select the Beep menu choice:

Battery TypeThe PMD670 can operate on 8 store bought AAsize Alkaline, Ni-Cd* or Ni-MH* batteries.*Not charged by the built-in charger.

An optional Ni-Cd battery pack (Model RB1100available from Marantz Professional) will becharged by the built-in charger when the ACadaptor is plugged in.

An optional Ni-MH battery pack (Model RB1650available from Marantz Professional) can be usedbut is not charged by the built in charger andrequires Marantz Professional charger modelBC600.

Default is Alkaline.

1. Select the Batt_Type menu choice:

Broadcast Wave ID numbersBroadcast Wave Format (.bwf) has three identifi-cation numbers in the header (Extension Chunk):Description, Originator, and Originator Refer-ence.For example, if the IDs are used for a broadcaststation ID1 could be the identifier of the station,ID2 could be used for the department code, andID3 for the badge number of the reporter.

Default is all ID number at 000000.

to on to turn power on and begin recording.During recording switch remote to off to stoprecording and power off.

• M.Track – during recording, switch remote toon to increment the track. A new track iscreated at that point.

Battery powerThe PMD670 can operate on several types ofbattery power.

Hint:Keep fully charged batteries in the PMD670when recording using AC power. Otherwise if ACpower is interrupted, as much as 30 minutes ofyour recording could be lost.

Eight AA alkaline batteries and the suppliedbattery carrier can be used. Alkaline batteriescan power recording or playback for about *6hours.

AA size rechargeable Ni-Cd or Ni-MH batteriescan be used in the supplied battery carrier, butthose cannot be recharged with the PMD670'sbuilt in charger.

An optional Ni-Cd battery model RB1100 can becharged in the PMD670. The RB1100 can alsobe charged with an optional charger modelBC600. Ni-Cd batteries can power recording orplayback for about *5 hours.

An optional Ni-MH (Nickel metal hydride) batterymodel RB1650 can be used, but cannot berecharged with the PMD670's built-in charger. Itrequires charger model BC600. Ni-MH batteriescan power recording or playback for about *7hours.

TROUBLESHOOTINGShould faults occur, it is in many cases not necessaryto consult your dealer or technical service department.On the basis of the following checks, you will be ableto rectify a number of conditions yourself withoutdifficulty. If the condition cannot be remedied after thefollowing check, please consult your dealer or contactMarantz Professional at 630 741 0330.

The PMD670 does not turn onCheck power• install fresh batteries• check AC adaptor connections

The PMD670 turns on then turns itself off• install fresh batteries

The PMD670 seems to record but there is no soundon playback

• check input settings (For example, if LINE input isselected and no input is connected to the LINE INjacks the PMD670 will record silence.)

The PMD670 will not playback• check EDL switch, if ON switch to OFF

No audio playback through headphones or internalspeaker

• check HP/SPK VOLUME control setting• check a different track or CF card

The PMD670 will not record• check that the maximum of 999 tracks have not

been recorded• check that the PMD670 acknowledges the CF card

No signal from microphone input• chedk input selection• check REC level control settings• check if microphone(s) require Phantom power

Excessive noise• check cable connections

Playback on a PC results in poor sound• check quality of PC sound card and program• check frequency conversion program*

*The PMD670 records audio files with a samplingfrequency of 48kHz. Some PC programs convertthe files to 44.1kHz (using a sample rate con-verter). Only high quality sample rate convertersshould be used.

PC cannot read files• check if the files are MP2 or MP2 with a .wav file

extension Some PC's cannot interpret this combi-nation. Try renaming the MP2 file so it has a .mp2or .mp3 file extension.

• check the capability of the PC program

Some playback and editing programs do notsupport MP2/MP3 or Broadcast Wave (.bwf)formats. Consult the Marantz Professionalwebsite at www.marantzpro.com for links toprograms that support MP2/MP3 and BroadcastWave Format.

The rechargeable battery not recharging• check that the CHARGE indicator is flashing

during charging and lit and steady when chargingis complete.

Rechargeable battery life low• make sure you fully charge and discharge the Ni-

Cd battery during each charge cycle• replace battery

Media cards that are heavily used should be occa-sionally reformatted to avoid audio problems due tofragmentation.

If the PMD670 exhibits erratic behavior, the micropro-cessor can be reset by, powering off, disconnectingAC power and removing batteries.

LIMITED WARRANTY

Your Marantz Professional product is warranted againstmanufacturer defects in material and workmanship for aperiod of one year parts and labor.

Except as specified below, this warranty covers defects inmaterial and workmanship. The following are not coveredunder warranty:

1. Damage, deterioration, malfunction or failure to meetperformance specifications resulting from:a) Accidents, acts of nature, misuse, abuse, neglect or

unauthorized product modification.b) Improper installation, removal or maintenance, or

failure to follow supplied instructions.c) Repair or attempted repair by a non-Marantz

authorized agent.d) Any shipment (claims must be presented to the

carrier).e) Any cause other than a defect of manufacturing.

2. Cleaning, check-ups with no fault found or changesincurred for installation, removal or reinstallation of theproduct.

3. Any serialized product on which the serial number hasbeen defaced, modified or removed.

4. Batteries and battery chargers.

5. Accessories, including but not limited to: cables, mount-ing hardware and brackets, cleaning accessories, powercords and adapters, and carry cases.

6. Products purchased outside of the United States, itspossessions or territories.

Non-transferable warranty

This Warranty may be enforced only by the original pur-chaser.

What We Will Pay For

We will pay for all labor and material expenses for itemscovered by the warranty.

1. If your unit needs service in the USA, contact ourservice referral at the appropriate telephone numberindicated below. We will advise you of the name andlocation of one or more authorized service centersfrom which service may be obtained. Please do notreturn the unit directly to us.

2. You must pay any shipping charges if it is necessary toship the product for service. If the necessary repairsare covered by the warranty, we will pay returnshipping charges to your location anywhere in theUnited States or its territories.

3. Whenever warranty service is required, you mustpresent the original dated sales receipt or other proofof date purchased.

Limitation of Implied Warranties

All implied warranties, including warranties of merchantabil-ity and fitness for a particular purpose, are limited induration to the length of this warranty.

Exclusion of Damages

Liability for any defective product is limited to repair orreplacement of the product at manufacturer’s option.Manufacturer shall not be liable for damage to otherproducts caused by any defects in Marantz products,damages based on inconvenience or loss of use of theproduct, or any other damages, whether incidental, conse-quential, or otherwise.

Some States do not allow limitations on how long an impliedwarranty lasts and/or do not allow the exclusion or limitationof incidental or consequential damages, so the abovelimitations and exclusions may not apply to you.
