Principal’s Message

Dear Parents and Carers, Cyber Safety – Is Your Family Safe? Every year in ICT, students will be learning about Cyber safety, in an effort to become safe and responsible users of technology. Computers are becoming an ever more important tool for communication and a wonderful tool for many people: however, it does need to be used carefully and responsibly. As you would be aware, there are many issues that can arise with the use of social media, and our staff are outlining some of these concerns in their Digital Technologies sessions to ensure your child’s safety. However, we need your help. We ask for your partnership in ensuring our students are only accessing APPROPRIATE social media platforms. Each social media platform has its own age restrictions, and we ask that you help your child to adhere to them. This graphic clearly shows that the majority of popular social media platforms have an age restriction of at least 13 years old. No student at Maramba Primary School should have one of these accounts. If you allow your children to use one of these social media platforms, against the company guidelines, we strongly encourage that you closely monitor their use.

From time to time inappropriate use of social media are brought to our attention, including access to inappropriate content, and if it is school related, we will follow this up. However, we can only do so much and I encourage any parent or carer to discuss appropriate use of technology with their child. If your child is experiencing cyberbullying, we encourage you to seek further advice from the following websites, or in some cases, you may wish to contact police. More information can be found: http://www.education.vic.gov.au/about/programs/bullystoppers/Pages/parentcyber.aspx https://www.esafety.gov.au/iparent Camps Sports Excursion Fund Allowance (CSEF) This allowance is to help families pay for the cost of camps, sports and excursions and is available to people who hold a valid Health Care Card or Pensioner Benefit Card. If you think you may be eligible for this allowance please complete the application form, which can be picked up from the office. Application forms must be completed each year and returned to the front office with a copy of your current card.

The Impact of Absences from School – The Hard Facts “Attendance is also an important contributor to a student’s academic achievement – all school days matter. The correlation between absence and achievement is consistently negative and declines in achievement are evident with any level of absence.” “As absences accrue over several years, the effect on a student’s academic achievement is cumulative. Hancock et al. (2013) found that Year 3 students with an accumulated unauthorised absence rate of 10% in each of their first three years of schooling achieved approximately 36 points lower in Year 3 on the NAPLAN numeracy domain than students with no unauthorised absences during the same period. As students generally gain 100 points from Year 3 to Year 5 (Hancock et al. 2013), a 36 point difference is almost two thirds of a year’s growth in achievement that students with high rates of unauthorised absences fail to reach. This impact continues to be evident in further years as well.” It is important that all students attend school every day to ensure maximum opportunities for learning growth. It is a department requirement that all absences are recorded at school on the morning of the absence and with the reason. Staff are required to follow up on all unreported absences. Please help staff by calling the school and advising if your child will not be attending school and the reason of their absence. If you wish to take your child from school to attend a dentist and/or other appointment during school hours, you MUST call at the office to sign them out. If the child is returned to school later that day, they MUST be accompanied to the office by an adult and approved by office staff. We appreciate your support and assistance with ensuring your child/ren and our students are safe.

Assistant Principal Report

The Year ones are learning in Discovery about Growing Older and Wiser. As a part of this unit of work, we

visited the BUPA Aged Care facility in Narre Warren. We all walked there together, being safe to cross the

roads. Upon arrival, we had a quick drink and some fruit and sang our song to the residents. They really

seemed to enjoy our singing and actions to “The Pushbike Song – By the Beetles.” There were lots of

activities that we prepared for everyone. Including Lego, glitter sun catchers, felt story boards, reading,

play dough and paper planes. Our students enjoyed sharing small conversations with the residents and

even had a competition with the paper planes. We got caught in a little rain on the walk back, however

we dried off very quickly at school. These are the students’ comments of the visit:

I really liked the rain because it was cold. I built aeroplanes and we flew them with my friends. Cruz 1W6

Winter – The one with the white hair and the blue top was good. She made a love heart and I showed her

how to make a stamp. Winter 1W6

I really liked walking in the rain. The people were old and they had big fish tank. Amy 1W6

Our visit to the nursing home, firstly we walked there. Next I played Lego and we walked back. Luc 1VT7

Our visit to the nursing home. Firstly, we all sang the song to the people. Next I played and made ginger

bread men. Finally we walked back to school. Jessica 1VT7

First we walked to the house. Then we had a drink and sang a song and made sandwiches. Last we walked

back. Daniel 1W6

First we walked to the house. Then Jessica and I played with people. Last we walked back to school in the

rain. Madison 1W6

First we walked to the house. Then we sang. Last we walked back to school in the rain. The people we

nice and pretty good to us. Yousra 1W6

District Swimming Carnival

On Tuesday 25th February twelve determined years’ 3-6 students travelled down to Noble Park Aquatic

Centre to compete against five other schools in the Berwick District. Students competed in 50 metres

freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly along with a freestyle and medley relay. 3/4’s Jaxon,

Lucas, Nicholas and Sahil finished third in the freestyle relay. While Emma from 3/4F16 held her own

extremely well to finish third in the 50 metres butterfly. Kiara from 3/4P14 starred on the day finishing

second in both 50 metres backstroke and butterfly, which qualifies her for the divisional stage.

One of my favourite things was the backstroke. I was really tired but it was fun. Kiara 3/4P14

I was very excited, you have no idea how much I was shaking. I had so much fun and it was an amazing

experience. Megan 5R20

Coming 3rd in the freestyle relay was the best! Nicholas 3/4F16

I enjoyed diving off the dive board and doing butterfly. Emma 3/4F16

A big well done to all students that participated and a big thankyou to all parents that came down to

support.

Go Maramba!

Welcome to Coding at Maramba

The sound of excitement has filled the corridors. Our Coding program at Maramba has officially

started and students are fully engaged in learning how to code our robots.

Our Foundation to year 2 students have learnt how to use our Bee-Bots. Bee-Bots are an

exciting robot that introduces students to basic algorithms. Students can move the Bee-Bots

forwards, backwards and turn left or right whilst travelling to a specific destination.

Our 3-6 students are learning how to create more complex algorithms with Dot & Dash. This

week students incorporated their Mathematics skills through measuring specific distances and

angles as well as completing challenge card activities.
