AbstractThis session will use Windows XP as a basis for examples and discussion. Most of the information can apple to Macintosh and Linux with some adaptation.

– Monitors use Pixels across the screen or pixels per inch (ppi)
• Pixels (picture elements) • Pixel Size, Dot Pitch
– 640x480, 1024x768, 1280x10246 • Color Depth – 16 bit, 24 bit
– Printers/paper uses dots per inch (dpi)• Scanner resolution 600x1200 • Dots per Inch from scanning • 75, 300, 600, 1200

Picture Formats
• TIFF - little compression, but lossless
• GIF - lossey
• JPEG - high compression, but still lossey
• PNG- compression, newer but still loss
• BMP - legacy Windows native format

Re-Size v Re-Sample
• Change display size (rescaling) – Only resize on the screen – Still contains the same detail – Still requires as much space to store
• Change true picture information “resample” – Truly change the "size" of the file – Will lose some detail (lossey v. lossless) – Will actually change storage space requirements
