C 'DUNERA BOYS": 1941 (Apr 28) plain lettersheet from a Jewish internee at Hay Camp to his parents in China with the rare boxed 'PERMISSION/GRANTED' h/s & forwarded to Sydney where struck with 'PASSED BY CENSOR/S. 104' h/s, 5d Ram pair affixed partly across the boxed h/s & tied by Sydney cds of 3/5/1941, 'SHANGHAI' arrival b/s, opened a little roughly at the back & overall aging with some tonespots mostly on the reverse.

During May and June 1940, the British rounded up 75,000 mostly Jewish refugees from Germany and Austria and interned them. Churchill suspected there were "Fifth Columnists" among them & wanted them out of Britain. Some 2500 were sent to Australia aboard the "Dunera", a ship with a maximum capacity of only 1500 including crew. Conditions were appalling & on arrival at Sydney the inspecting medical officer's report resulted in the officer in command being court martialled. The British were acutely embarassed and placed a 100 years embargo on the "Dunera" file! The Dunera Boys were released in late-1942 & hundreds were accepted into the British & Australian Armies. After the war, many stayed in Australia & achieved prominence in academia, sciences, the arts and business. The sender, Fritz Guttenburg, was a "Dunera Boy": see also Lots 134 & 196.

A very scarce wartime postcard rate. [The sender was interned at Hay (NSW) then at Tatura. After his release in 1942, he joined the Australian Army. Writing to his parents in Shanghai, he wisely advises that he has shelved his idea of emigrating to China, partly because of "the situation in Shanghai" but also "I think that you would not be able to deposit the necessary landing deposit..."]

Compulsory Training (Territorial) CampsThe Defence Act (1911) imposed compulsory military training on all medically-fit males aged 14 to 25. They were required to attend parade one night every week, and spend 7 to 14 days each year in temporary military camps where post offices were established mostly using generic (or "relief") datestamps. These cds were to be struck beside, not on, the adhesive(s) though this was often ignored. Surviving mail from most of the camps is rare. Territorial Camps continued to be conducted during the War. More research is required into the sub-types of the 'MILITARY CAMP' datestamps. Startup & Proud's illustrations are inaccurate & several examples here present as unrecorded sub-types. Rather than allocate inaccurate numbers, they are distinguished by their physical features.

Ex Lot 845

The Gallipoli FiascoThe Dardenelles Campaign was one of the most ill-conceived and poorly executed plans of the entire war. While troops from many countries - though very few from Britain - participated in the landings, Australian and New Zealand forces bore the brunt of the fighting and suffered the greatest casualties. The first landings occurred on 25/4/1915. The troops were withdrawn on 20/12/1915, after eight months of futility and great loss. Both countries commemorate - not celebrate - Anzac Day on 25th April each year.
