Damage Assessment of Maqshamat Al Qasimi, Sana’a, Yemen

UNITAR – UNOSAT analysed imagery over the Old City of Sana’a, Yemen,a World Heritage Site, to document reported damage to theMaqshamat Al Qasimi area resulting from a possible “bombing raid1” inearly June 2015 (see photograph). Using satellite imagery collected on 8July 2015 by the WorldView-2 satellite, and compared with imagerydating from 15 May 2015, UNITAR – UNOSAT found clear indications ofthe reported destruction. As indicated in the following slides, buildingsat the site have clearly disappeared between 15 May and 8 July 2015.

Notably, rubble visible in ground photographs has been removed as of 8July, and no craters are visible in the satellite imagery. Therefore, reviewof the photographs together with the satellite imagery make the causeof the destruction uncertain.
