If anyone is traipsing through B.C.’s back-country and come across an enormous furrymammal lumbering upright towards themfrom the woods, it could be one of twothings:

It’s either shirtless uncle Larry in dire needof a back wax, or the mysterious Bigfoot, or,referencing the term first used by J.W. Burnsin the 1920s, a sasquatch.

On Thursday, April 18, a man who hasclaimed to have had several encounters withsasquatches will present The Art of SasquatchIn British Columbia at the Home Restaurant,21667 Lougheed Hwy.

Presented by the International Society forPrimal People – Sasquatch (ISPP), the freeevent runs 5:30 to 9 p.m. and is being hostedby author and ISPP founder Thom Cantrall.

Maple Ridge’s Brian Bland, a self-describedsasquatch “experiencer” is also taking part.

Bland, 54, has had a fascination about sas-quatches since he was young, but it wasn’tuntil he met area resident and sasquatchresearcher Randy Brisson that he trekked intothe woods to experience the creatures first-hand.

Bland and Brisson became friends and

continue to go on sasquatch-sightingexpeditions together.

While he has never seen a sas-quatch, Bland said he has heardthem knocking on trees, add-ing that he once heard themconversing amongst each otherbehind the heavy camouflageof the wilderness.

“We’re knocking [on trees]and saying, ‘Hello, how areyou guys?’” Bland related.“They know him [Brisson].If they feel comfortable withyou and they pick up on some-body else, then they’re more likelyto interact. If they don’t like youor don’t know you, then you’ll goin there [their habitat] for 50 yearsand you will never hear a peep fromthem.”

Bland said he’s experiencedthe creatures answering hisand Brisson’s knocks withknocks of their own.

“It was kind of funnybecause they did something that sounded likea machine gun, they were knocking so fast,”Bland said. “They must have had a stickbetween two trees or something. There was ahumour to it.”

Bland said he’s “sensed” sasquatches, add-ing that “they’ve done some crazy stuff withme. I’ve heard them talking, literally for 10minutes. Talking.”

He continued, “We’ve had rocks come out

from the bush, we’ve been sitting on abeach and a big boulder would splash

right in front of us, we’ve heardwhistles, knocking, [there’s been]smell…”

Believers like Bland can befound around the globe, andin the Pacific Northwest theyhave a support network in theISPP, a volunteer organizationdevoted to fostering greaterunderstanding of the phenom-enon known in North Americaas sasquatch or Bigfoot.Contacted by the TIMES at his

home in Kennewick, Wash., Cantrallsaid he started the society as an edu-cational tool and a way of protecting

sasquatches.“[We need a] law that says,don’t kill them,” Cantrall said.“Make them free from beingmurdered. We have the samelaw but it doesn’t alwayswork for us.”

Cantrall, who celebrates his70th birthday July 1, ran a logging companyand did contract jobs establishing propertylines on forest tracts and, during that time,says he had several encounters with sas-quatches.

“I was a forester for years, and I spentso much time quiet, totally alone,” Cantrallsaid. “They’re very curious and they comearound.”

Now that spring is finally here andthe weather is getting warmer itis time to think about flea andparasite prevention for your dogs

and cats.There have never been so many safe and

effective products available for parasite pre-vention as there is today. However, withthe large selection of products it can be a bitoverwhelming when it comes to choosingthe best product for your pet.

When you consider flea prevention alone,there is a choice between topically appliedproducts or oral tablets.

Advantage is a very safe and effectivemonthly topical product. It stays on the sur-face of the pet and will kill fleas that happento jump onto your pet. Revolution is anothertopical product that is a bit different in thatit is absorbed internally after being applied

to the skin. It is effective on fleas in catsand dogs, and it also works well for someinternal parasites, heartworm, scabies mitesand ear mites, and offers tick prevention.

In the tablet form there has traditionallybeen Program, as a once a month chewabletablet. It contains a drug that prevents theflea from reproducing after the flea takesa blood meal from the pet. This will thenhalt the flea life cycle, but does not kill theadult flea. The makers of Program also offerCapstar as a simple tablet that kills adultfleas for 24 hours to be used with Program.

They also offer a product called Sentinelfor dogs, which is also taken monthly andcontains Program as well as a drug that willkill many internal worms, heartworm, andwhipworm – so it is essentially similar toRevolution minus the effect on mites andscabies and ticks.

So, if this is not yet confusing enough, themakers of Advantage produced AdvantageMulti. It contains the same flea-killingingredient with the added benefit of killingroundworms, hookworms, whipworms, sca-bies, ear mites – but not ticks.

They also make Advantix (for dogs only)which can kill ticks as well as fleas.

And now, to add to all of this, anothercompany launched a product for dogscalled Comfortis, which is a monthly pillthat kills fleas when they bite so it is kindof like a cross between the killing effects of

Advantage but in a tablet form like Programand Sentinel. Then not to be outdone, theyadded another drug to it so it also would killheartworm, some roundworms, and whip-worms. It is called Trifexis.

As veterinarians, we are able to determinewhich parasites your pet may be at risk ofand recommend the safest and most effect-ive product for you.

Obviously a small house pet will be at low

risk for ticks or whipworms, whereas dogstravelling to the Okanagan may be at higherrisk of heartworm disease.

Most over-the-counter products for fleassold in pet stores contain Permethrin, whichis very weak in effectiveness on fleas and isvery toxic to cats. The cat products containmethoprene which can prevent eggs fromhatching but has no effect on killing adultfleas. Feel free to call us for advice.

The frustration at the Maple Ridge-PittMeadows board of education meeting lastweek was palpable as trustees discussedhow they would trim $5.6 mil-lion from their 2013/14 budget.

School district 42 secretary-treasurer Flavia Coughlan pre-sented trustees with proposedcost-cutting measures in thedraft budget, which includedcutting 35 positions, trimmingsupplies and services by 8.3 percent, and dipping into reserves.

About $1.5 million would betaken from reserves, almost$2.9 million would be saved byreducing staff – including twosecondary administrators – andthe saving from cutting suppliesand services would be about $1.2million.

The budget process, whichincluded an online survey, hasbeen a “particularly challengingprocess” this year, said board chair MikeMurray.

Murray added that costs are increasingwithout funding being increased by theprovincial government, however, thereis an expectation of the best educationexperience in the world.

“It’s the combination of those two thatdoesn’t add up,” Murray said.

Several trustees spoke about how dif-ficult it was to look for savings in thebudget, with some moved to tears at theirfrustration.

Trustee Sarah Nelson choked up whentalking about how hard it is to make cutsthat affect the people in the school dis-trict, adding that “it really sucks.”

Trustee Susan Carr said that having thebudget cut this year again is “scary” forparents, and she wondered what wouldhappen next year.

Education should be an election issue,she added, but she said she hasn’t heard

anything about it so far.Trustee Ken Clarkson said education

should be made into an election issue.He said the model of funding for educa-

tion is “unreliable and inconsistent.”“It’s just a very complex system – it

needs refining so it makes more sense topeople.”

After the meeting, Trustee Dave Rempelsaid the trimming of the budget to cut theneeded $5.6 million balanced the “pain,”adding that the school district staff has

done an “equitable job” whenlooking for cuts across thewhole system.

But if more cuts are neededin the future, other more “sub-stantial” things may have tobe done, for example, closingschools.

While the budget hasincreased for education overallin the province, Rempel said“it’s never been enough” tocover off the items that keeprising, for example, inflationand MSP premiums.

The budget documents include aproposal to cut the hours of librar-ians at secondary schools in half,something that concerns districthelping librarian Halia Hirniak,who is also the teacher-librarian at

Laity View Elementary.This will mean there will only be a

half-time librarian at each of the sixhigh schools in Maple Ridge and PittMeadows.

“As a group, we are both dismayed anddisappointed at this proposal,” she said.

The board will receive presentations onWednesday (April 17) at 6 p.m. at MapleRidge Secondary from partner groups andthe public at a budget committee-of-the-whole meeting.

The librarians will make a presentationat the meeting on Wednesday evening.

Preregistration by Monday was requiredto present at the meeting.

The board will use the information col-lected at the meeting in their April 24deliberations.

The budget bylaw is scheduled to bedealt with in early May.

Election resultin your hands

As of today (barring the dangerouslyunexpected), the “writ has dropped”and the province of British Columbia isin election mode.

This is democracy, folks, and you’repart of it. This is when you get to makethe decisions that really count: becausethe decisions you make in the comingmonth will determine who makes thedecisions that steer your communityand your province, eco-nomically and socially,for the next four years.

This is an importantelection… they all are.Whatever the pollstersmay try to tell you, theresults are not a foregone conclusion.It may sound trite when the politicianssay it (and it is, admittedly, usually saidby those who don’t like what the pollssay at any given moment), the only pollthat counts is the one that takes placeon election day – the one that’s countedafter the ballot boxes are opened bybona fide Elections BC personnel.

Some people consider this wholedemocracy thing an unwelcome chore,others will ignore it altogether – anannoyance that will go away in a fewweeks. And then they’ll complain about“poor leadership” and how they don’treally have any control.

But we’re going to do our best togive you as much information as wecan about all the candidates and theissues that affect you directly. We’ll useTwitter and Facebook, Layar and ourwebsite at www.mrtimes.com, and ofcourse, these printed pages to conveyyour candidates’ responses to electionissues as they arise.

Just ask the billions of people on thisplanet who would die – literally – forthe democracy so many of us take forgranted. They would tell you to payattention, study your options, and makean informed decision on May 14.

It might have rained and driz-zled and blustered since then,but I don’t think many of us haveforgotten that glorious Easter longweekend we had – that tiny tasteof what the months of July andAugust and, if we’re lucky likelast year, September will bring.

Hot, lazy days in the sun whenyou can unplug and unwind andmaybe pretend that all thoseundone tasks are really done.

Coming from a long line ofworkaholics, it’s sometimes hardfor me to stop and slow down and take a vaca-tion. (Vacation when I was growing up was usu-ally working on the farm…)

I had a rare four-day weekend at Easter andheaded off to one of those Gulf Islands whosename, when I mention to people, elicits puzzledlooks.

It’s so peaceful and remote, that there areno police, and there’s barely any traffic on theisland – maybe two cars down the road per day.

And the four days we spent on vacation was areminder that life is meant to be enjoyed, if onlyfor brief moments, and it is so much more enjoy-able when you unplug.

That glorious sunshiny weekend made itfeel like summer – it was like flying down toCalifornia in December, which I had the priv-ilege of doing with the Sunshine Foundation’sDreamLift this past winter.

As we were leaving the mainland on the bigferry to Nanaimo for Easter, I quickly turned offmy phone to avoid roaming charges.

I thought it might be hard to be without mynewly acquired iPhone, but it took me all ofsix minutes to get used to being unplugged andtuned into vacation mode.

I did not miss Twitter, Facebook, my email, orthe world wide web – I was in the world wideweb.

And when we reached that remote island andwe were away from those screens that dominate

so much of 2013, we opened oureyes to what was around us: blueskies and sun, deer meanderingacross the road, dozens and doz-ens of starfish, spiderwebs, rocksand trees, cows grazing in fields,a seal coming up for air, millionsof stars in the night sky, buddingtrees, cherry blossoms – even themosquitoes weren’t that annoy-ing.

Because it was a vacation to theGulf Islands, of course the kids,unbeknownst to me, had packed

their swimming gear.And of course they had to get a taste of the

salty ocean brine – I just lay on the rocks andadmired their bravery.

Then there were the bonfires – no fire bansin March! And the roasted marshmallows andweiners and the inevitable sword-fighting withsticks and arguing over who gets to add oxygento the fire.

And more beach time, and more bonfires.So, with summer and old age around the cor-

ner – okay, a bit of hyperbole – I am learning tobalance my life between the constant barrage ofinformation and the tranquility of the awesomenature around us.

As many of my acquaintances know, my usualline is, “Relaxing isn’t in my DNA,” but withmiddle age comes the warnings of high bloodpressure and other serious medical conditions.I guess I do want to stick around this planet, atleast for a few more election cycles.

It’s so easy to get caught up in the daily grindof work, bills, kids, housework, and petty triv-ialities.

I think the 24/7 connectivity that we’ve invest-ed so much time, money, and effort into hasmade us feel that we are indispensable and needto be constantly connected – but, for the sakeof our health, sometimes we just need to severthose ties.

And now on to that election coverage...

Dear Editor,When you watch the evening

news or read the daily paper thesedays, you are likely to ask your-self why we are going to all theexpense and bother of a provincialelection. The result has apparentlyalready been determined.

A few polling companies haveconducted surveys. We reallydon’t know who or what they asked, butit seems there really is no need for us totrouble ourselves when we’ve already beentold what we think.

Coming from the 1960s and being a “freespirit” of long duration, I find this situationtroubling. We are an educated populationcapable of making up our own minds oneven such complex matters as the kind offuture we want for our children and grand-children, and who is best equipped to worktoward these goals. Give us the facts, andwe can make a sound decision.

We have just begun the demo-cratic process in which time is setaside for the candidates and theelectorate to communicate witheach other. We are able to hearwhat each candidate is proposing,let them know what is importantto us, and make an informed deci-sion which is reflected in the bal-lot box, not on the evening news

more than a month prior to the election.Why not call the candidates up and ask

hard questions?Please don’t be misled. The only way

the next session of the legislature can trulyreflect your values and work toward yourgoals is if you have actively participated.Inform yourself of the issues and vote.

Let’s make the next term of four yearsa reflection of the values of all BritishColumbians, not just a select few. Youropinion matters – express it!

Closure fear fulfilledDear Editor,

Shame! Almost immediately upon closingthe Kitsilano Coast Guard station, the verything that British Columbians feared hascome to pass: the completely unnecessarydeath of an innocent person.

The poor man waited for more than 40minutes for assistance, in full view of theclosed station, before succumbing to a heartattack. Shame on every single ConservativeMP in B.C. for allowing this to happen. It’sobvious that their priorities don’t lie withus. I sure hope people remember thesekinds of things, come 2015.

improvements to be madeto the trails at GoldenEars Park [Half a millionpromised for trail, bridgeupgrades, April 9, TIMES]. I

was a frequent user of thetrails before becoming aparaplegic in 1990.

Throughout B.C. there arenumerous accessible trailsfor those of us confined towheelchairs. Unfortunately,

there is not a great deal ofwilderness accessibility inour area.

I have often wishedthe Lower Falls Trail wasaccessible. It would requirewheelchair access from theparking lot and improve-ments to the trail base tomake them more wheelchairfriendly.

The family’s children andgrandchildren have run agood restaurant for the last33 years.

The patriarch of the fam-ily, Gabby, passed on afew years ago. But Anna,the matriarch, still comesin every day to make thepasta.

Since older brother Joewent to open a secondlocation in Abbotsford,Nick has been the generalin charge – his motherAnna may have an opinionabout that.

The family purchasedsome land on LougheedHighway – next to themotel – a few years agowith the intent of movingthere in the future.

Discussions with theDistrict have gone on foryears, and as the familyhad two years remainingon its lease, with anotherfive-year option, they feltthey had lots of time.

Much to their surprise,a little while ago, a largedevelopment sign wasinstalled in front of theirDewdney Trunk Roadrestaurant, announcingthey’re being replaced witha multi-storey commercialand residential develop-ment.

Along with calming Annadown, Nick spent most ofthat day answering phonecalls and inquiries aboutwhen they were closing.

Nick, after checkingwith his lawyer – whoconfirmed the provision ofa five-year renewal in hislease – dealt with the signappropriately.

Nick requested a meet-ing with the owner. Whenhe showed up, Nick wasinformed the building wasin the process of being soldand that, apparently, thenew owner had failed tonotice that the family stillhad seven years to run intheir lease. Nick says hewas offered $50,000 fromthe old owner to terminate

his family’s lease early.Nick’s position is, if they

want them out earlier, thefamily will have to getenough money in a settle-ment to get the new build-ing up and running.

The changes to the patient intakesystem were made with no increaseto the emergency room budget.

Ridge Meadows Hospital hasbeen able to implement a “totalrethinking of our flow process andstreaming,” said Shelley Scarlett, aregistered nurse and manager of theRidge Meadows Hospital emergencydepartment.

This is allowing the hospital staffto do their work more efficiently,Scarlett added.

The hospital staff noticed that,because of delays in response time,lower-acuity patients were leavingthe hospital without being seen.

“Even though they’re lower acuity,they still need to be seen in emer-

gency,” Scarlett said.Before the RAZ system was put

into place, “patients were leavingat a rate we weren’t satisfied with,”she said.

Currently, the number of patientsleaving has been cut inhalf, she added.

Whether they needtreatment, treatment andrelease, or just a referral,the hospital staff neededto see everyone who camethrough.

Those with less urgentneeds might be patients with blad-der infections or needing sutures,Scarlett explained.

The RAZ opened in September andwas fully running by October.

The nurses had to be trained totreat patients differently, but now“you have the right patients going tothe right place,” Scarlett said.

This streamlining ensures thatlower-acuity patients aren’t blockingthe higher-acuity patients.

The two-stream assessment sys-tem has been received well by staff,Scarlett said, and it has increased

morale in the departmentto have fewer people wait-ing in the waiting room.

The emergency roomcan be a “chaotic andunpredictable environ-ment,” Scarlett said, andthe staff never know whatis coming in that day.

However, she added, the nurses aretrained to deal with these unpredict-able situations, she added.

In response to a recent CBCreport giving a low grade to RidgeMeadows Hospital, The TIMES hasreceived a lot of positive, and nega-tive, feedback on its Facebook aboutthe local hospital service.

Two food producers from the com-munity have received funding from theprovincial Ministry of Agriculture to helppromote their local products.

Naturally Homegrown Foods Ltd. inMaple Ridge received a $100,000 grantto market its Hardbite potato chips andHopcott Premium Meats in Pitt Meadowsreceived a grant of $16,883 to helpincrease awareness and sales in theLower Mainland of its local beef.

The grants are part of a new provincialprogram called “Buy Local.”

Hopcott Premium Meats, with its retailstore on Old Dewdney Trunk Road, offersa “traditional butcher shop experience,”said the company’s community liaisonSarah Hopcott.

The grant will allow them to put onevents where people can learn about the

food being produced in Pitt Meadows– they will hold a meet-the-rancher eventin July and a special local food day inSeptember in conjunction with theirMeadows Maze.

“We know a lot of people are interest-ed... in where their food is coming from,”Hopcott said. “People can have a lot ofconfidence in how [our beef is] beingproduced and where it’s being produced.”

The grant will also be used to takepart in a consumer food trade show, EatVancouver.

In addition to their own beef feedlotand retail store, the Hopcotts also havea corn maze, cranberry bogs, and small-scale berry production.

Kirk Homenick, president of NaturallyHomegrown Foods, said his companywas “pretty excited” about receiving thegrant. It will be used for creative market-ing and public relations, he said.

The potato chips they make, the onlyones produced in B.C., are made withnatural ingredients from potatoes grownin the province, cooked in small batches,Homenick explained.

“We really cook with a lot of care andattention,” he said.

fuchsia which I winter over in thegarage. Each year it blooms laterand later in the season. Last yearit didn’t bloom until September. Iput it out after danger of frost haspassed. Sometimes I prune it inOctober, sometimes in April. Noneof that makes a difference in itsblooming time. The leaves tell meit’s quite healthy. How can I get itto bloom earlier? Or should I getrid of it and get a new one?”

Iwonder if your fuchsia isa victim of our changingweather.

For at least the past twoyears, our springs have beenextremely cold and wet, eachtime followed by longer, hotter,and drier summers than average.

The chilly downpours in thosesprings would have stoppedfuchsias from developing asearly as usual. My fuchsias werealso late coming into bloom bothyears.

Then the summer was long,hot, and dry.

When temperatures climbabove 26ºC, budding andflowering are held back andfuchsias begin to need muchmore water, or flowering can beinhibited for that reason, too.

Though fuchsias are frost-tender, they’re not really hot-climate plants. They do best inmoderation: gentle warmth anda sun-shade blend.

Gartenmeister is a good heir-loom-type fuchsia with a greatreputation for reliability. It’sworth keeping.

Dear Anne,“Last year I put seeds of Russian

red kale in the shady backyard. Itgrew well but was full of aphids,and I ended up throwing it all outin disgust. What can I do to pre-vent it from happening again? Isthere any nutrient I should add tothe soil?

Aphids are a huge problemin some gardens, and theonly organic solution is

row covers, put on shortly afterthe plants germinate, and kepton till harvest. Air, water, andsunlight does get through therow covers, but insects don’t.

Make sure the row covers arefastened to the ground so insectscan’t crawl under any littleopenings.

Row covers aren’t especially

inexpensive, but the materialcan be used repeatedly if you’recareful.

For really healthy, lush kale ahigh-nitrogen, organic fertilizerwill produce healthy leaves. Itneedn’t have a huge nitrogennumber – as long as it is higherthan the other two, the growthof leaves will be well promoted

(the numbers indicate: nitro-gen-phosphorous-potash). Abalanced fertilizer (numbers aremore or less equal) is also good.Dear Anne,“I bought an Orange Star plant

Two different house-plants are called ‘OrangeStar.’ One is a bulbous

flower with the true name ofOrnithogalum dubium. It makessmall offset bulbs which can bedug and re-potted.

“We had some prettyamazing results from theCanadian championshipsheld in Saskatoon thispast weekend,” said coachMcCrae.

The 2013 Nick Wilkes Invitational kicked off the track and fieldseason at Maple Ridge Secondary on Thursday afternoon.

This was the first meet of the year for many athletes.“We were lucky, the weather was fantastic,” said Ken Elphick,

tournament organizer, who added that all of the Pitt Meadowsand Maple Ridge schools attended, most of Langley’s, and all ofthe Coquitlam high schools.

“There was a nice friendly atmostphere. The kids really seemedto enjoy it,” Elphick added.

The invitational meet is a tribute to local athlete Nick Wilkeswho died in a car crash 11 years ago at the age of 22.
