“TO BE A STAR YOU MUST SHINE YOUR OWN LIGHT.”

MARINE ACADEMY PRIMARY IS UNIQUE; IT IS THE UK’S FIRST ‘MARINE’ PRIMARY SCHOOL. Marine Academy Plymouth is the first all-through school in the city and demonstrates how Plymouth University is committed to improving educational outcomes for our community which is why it has taken on the sponsorship of this exciting development.

Parents can have total confidence that the needs of every child, as they grow and develop, can be catered for throughout their years in education. There will be no need to fear the negative impact of those transition points when pupils move from school to school.

MAP is a family: at Marine Academy Primary, every child matters and every child will be able to evolve at his or her own pace, challenged to stretch and to develop skills and competencies.

The University School is dedicated to providing the best education for all, and the brightest future. MAP is where the whole family can flourish and learn together.

OUR MISSION:“TO PROVIDE AN OUTSTANDING

EDUCATION THAT ENSURES ALL PUPILS REACH THEIR GREATEST

POTENTIAL AND LIVE BY LIFE’S HIGHEST VALUES.”

Page 4: MAP2 primary: prospectus

Marine Academy Primary, MAP2, is a mixed free school which opened in September 2013 for children to join Reception and Year 1 classes.

We will now grow year by year, until we have a maximum of 420 pupils, so in the future, children aged 4-11 will be able to attend and flourish within a vibrant learning environment, making a seamless transition from Shining Stars Nursery, or any other pre school provider.

WHY SHOULD I SEND MY CHILD TO MAP2?We offer a broad, exciting curriculum which enables each individual pupil to become an effective learner who can go on to realise his or her ambitions.

The Marine Curriculum has been developed for pupils to follow with their specific learning needs in mind.

The demands of the 21st Century mean that our pupils will need to be alert to the new technologies and possibilities that these will create, and be able to swiftly adapt to change.

We a i m t o e n s u r e p u p i l s a r e independently minded and confident citizens of the future.

We have created an all-through school, enabling progression from Shining Stars Nursery, or any other pre-school provider, to MAP2 and Marine Academy Plymouth, with a clear pathway on to Plymouth University, our lead sponsor.

The Marine Curriculum aims to ensure pupils achieve high academic outcomes, excellent literacy and outstanding communication skills, a love for knowing how to learn and an eagerness to find out more.

It is designed to make it easy for pupils to have a seamless, all-through, high quality education and enable parents to be confident of the education and care of all their children, whatever their age, whatever their stage, on one campus.

WHAT IS A FREE SCHOOL?

ADMISSIONS POLICY:MAP2 is a non-selective school so pupils of all academic abilities from the local area are welcome to attend. It is a fully inclusive school which will provide an outstanding education for all pupils so that each child can achieve their potential.

The three sponsors, Plymouth University, Cornwall College and Plymouth Local Authority, are determined to ensure a high quality school that will raise standards of educational achievement to the very highest levels.

Admissions will take place in September each year and the Local Authority Admissions Process will be used except where an in-year admission is requested and processed according to the regulations.

Parents who wish their children to attend MAP2 should make certain that they fill in the Admission Form and name MAP2 as their first choice.

Please refer to Plymouth City Council for more information on their admissions criteria.

WHO IS MAP2 FOR?

Free schools are state-funded schools, but they are independent of local authority control.

Like any state-funded school they are subject to Ofsted inspections and are accountable to the Secretary of State for Education.

We have developed our very own exciting and engaging Marine Curriculum because we strongly believe the right school can transform children’s lives and help them achieve things they may never have imagined.

HOW DO MAP2 STUDENTS LEARN?« Pupils are treated as individuals. Those in need of

specialist support receive it. Pupils with particular strengths are encouraged and supported so that all achieve.

« There are four Key Stages - Creators, Discoverers, Explorers and Pioneers.

« Each stage is based on the developmental needs of children and their education at different stages, to give pupils a learning experience that is relevant to both their present and future needs.

« Our teachers bring the National Curriculum alive by making links between the individual subjects and applying them to topics.

« The Marine Curriculum is based on themes, each with a ‘WOW’ moment to gain immediate interest and develop to an end point.

« These include discovering the city’s vibrant fishing industry through a visit to Sutton Harbour fish market then pupils building their own ‘boats’ and using real items such as fishing nets.

« Explorers wil l become archaeologists and undertake a ‘dig’ in the school grounds under the guidance of a real archaeologist to excavate historical artefacts - This level involves teamwork, risk-taking, and reasoning skills.

« Tied into these stages is the Virtues Project that will nurture pupils in the qualities needed in school and later in adult life.

« Fifty two virtues are included in the curriculum and ethos of the school to help create intelligence plus character. These will range from Caring, Courage and Confidence to Honesty, Tolerance and Determination.

THE CURRICULUMChildren study all the subjects to be found in the National Curriculum.

For their literacy and numeracy lessons the pupils will be streamed according to ability.

The needs of the individual are paramount, so groups will remain flexible and pupils will be moved around according to their current needs to ensure all make good progress.

TARGETS: READING AND SPELLINGBy the end of Key Stage 1, we have the high expectation that at least 90% of children will reach Level 2 and above in reading and spelling which will give them the skills to develop other areas of learning.

At Key Stage 2, children will sample a variety of types of literature.

Parents will be closely involved in supporting their children’s literacy development.

By the end of Year 6, we have the high expectation that at least 95% of children will achieve Level 4 or above in reading.

TARGETS: MATHSThere is a structured mathematics programme from Reception year which will be dynamic and flexible.

Children will be assessed and grouped according to their ability so they will be able to work with others who are at the same stage in the curriculum.

Maths Makes Sense (MMS) teaches pure maths from the beginning and is built around ten big ideas which underpin all mathematical learning from age four to eleven.

TARGETS: SCIENCEScience will be taught across the school from Reception onwards. At MAP2, Science is an important core element.

Science is taught through the Marine Curr iculum which gives chi ldren opportunities to satisfy their natural curiosity in the world around them.

Working with Plymouth University and the National Marine Aquarium, we encourage children to find rational explanations of what they observe and stimulate their enthusiasm for finding out about the natural world.

OUR AIMS:★ To provide free, accessible learning for pupils,

regardless of their background and academic ability.

★ To provide much needed school places. Research has shown that the number of reception places in Plymouth primary schools needs to significantly increase, and one of the biggest areas of demand for places is in the north west of Plymouth.

★ To increase achievement and raise aspirations amongst the community, inspiring pupils to fulfil their potential.

★ For each pupil to reach their full potential in body, mind, heart and spirit.

A POLICY OF SUPPORT AND RESPECT…

We believe all children deserve the very best possible start and we aim to enrich the lives of all our pupils.

All children with special needs are welcome at MAP2. Full support will be provided to each child who has special needs requirements with well thought-out strategies to overcome any barriers to learning. MAP2 is a fully inclusive school providing an outstanding and caring education so all pupils can achieve their potential.

Parents are fully involved and the progress of children with special educational needs is monitored towards meeting specifically identified goals and targets.

Specialist strategies include a strong commitment towards training and developing all teachers and teaching assistants in their understanding of special educational needs.

Full advantage is taken of experience gained in this field through established success in Marine Academy Plymouth (MAP).

Excellent care, guidance and support contributes significantly to pupils' personal development to make them all feel safe and secure and make the best possible academic and personal progress.

ANTI-DISCRIMINATIONA primary obligation of all staff and pupils is to ensure that the Marine Academy Primary policy of non-discrimination and mutual respect is adhered to. This duty obliges all individuals to behave in a manner reflective of the ethos of the school; where no individual is negatively impacted by the wrongful behaviour of others.

Discrimination comes in many forms and may be aimed at various aspects of an individual’s being; such as race, creed, rel igion, disabil ity or nationality. By adopting a pragmatic definition of discrimination, the school aims to protect against such discrimination in all its guises.

SAFEGUARDINGMarine Academy Primary recognises that it has a duty to ensure arrangements are in place for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and we will carry out this duty through our teaching and learning, pastoral care and extended activities.

All members of the school community(including volunteers and governors) will at all times establish and maintain a safe and stimulating environment where children feel secure, are encouraged to talk to adults they can trust and are listened to.
