On behalf of the Department of Education andChildren, it is my very great pleasure to welcome youto the 13th Manx Youth Games event here at theNational Sports Centre, Douglas.
Over the last 13 years, the Manx Youth Games haveplayed an important role developing junior sport on theIsle of Man. It has assisted with significantly increasingthe levels of participation in all sports, increasing thenumber of qualified coaches and volunteers who deliversafe and effective training and increasing the numberof junior leagues. The positive effects of the ManxYouth Games are both wide reaching and long lasting.
As we look forward to the Commonwealth Games inGlasgow in 2014, the Queen’s Baton Relay will bepresented during the opening ceremony, also keep aneye out for the Commonwealth Games mascot, Clyde.
Since January, approximately 12,000 young people have involved in weekly training sessionsacross the twelve sports that are represented in this year’s Games. We are all very gratefulfor the hard work, enthusiasm and dedication of all of the coaches and volunteers who makethe Manx Youth Games so successful. Thank you
The Manx Youth Games have provided many children with their first real opportunity to takepart in a wide range of different sports in a fun, structured and positive environment.Progressing into junior leagues and community clubs, some children have gone on torepresent the Isle of Man in junior squads, with a select few now recognised at British levelas potential stars of the future.
The Island’s sporting future looks bright with the Sports Development team working hardwith the governing bodies of sport on the Island to encourage more young people to getinvolved in sport.
Good luck to everyone who is taking part today in this great event; I hope that all of thehard work will be rewarded with fine performances in each chosen sport!
