The logo : sparks and synapses The logo can be read both as sparks and synapses, elements that are considered powerful symbols of innovation and creativity. While sparks evoke an unpredictable event or changing situation, synapses stand for links between different elements, they connect ideas, or even universes. The shape resembles a star, which helps identify the Year as an EU initiative. The logo of the previous European Year is similar in that it combines a simple coloured shape with a claim in black and white.

Brand space ( protection zone)The brand space is the protection zone around the signet which rules out any visual competition with other design elements in the immediate proximity. This protective area is especially important for co-branding. It is mandatory for printed materials. The basic unit of the protection zone is derived from the “o”: its dimensions are determined as variables of the size of the letter “o”.The protection zone is to be regarded as a minimum. If necessary, the brand space can be extended, as required by the situation in question. Only a single-colour background in white in the corporate design colours may be used behind the signet. Certain exceptions to this rule are permitted in web design. Here, the protection zone does not have to be adhered to due to limited space, so the signet can be smaller.

Foundry Adobe Type

Adobe’s Myriad is the typeface which is used in Apple’s modern marketing. The word “word” set in roman, italic, and bold.Myriad is a humanist sans-serif typeface designed by Robert Slimbach and Carol Twombly for Adobe Systems. Myriad was originally issued in 99 as Myriad MM, a multiple master type family which worked with an intelligent software “engine” to allow the user to generate variations in width and weight. In 2000 it was reissued as Myriad Pro, an OpenType font family.

Myriad MM was discontinued in 2003.Myriad is easily recognized due to its special “y” descender (tail), slanting “e” cut, and rounded curves.Myriad Pro is the OpenType version of the original Myriad font family. It first shipped in 2000, as Adobe moved towards the OpenType standard. Additional designers were Christopher Slye and Fred Brady. Myriad Pro comprises 40 fonts in four widths and five weights. Originally it was only 30 fonts, but a “semi-condensed” width was added several years later. Compared to Myriad MM, it added support for Latin Extended, Greek, and Cyrillic characters, and oldstyle figures.

Myriad Pro won bukva:raz! 200under the Greek and Cyrillic categoriesMyriad Pro Greek won TDC2 2000 (Type Directors Club Type Design Competition 2000) in the Text/display type systems category.

Working typefacesTahoma (System)

Like the print typeface, the working typeface is a sans-serif linear antiqua typeface and was designed by Matthew Carter for Microsoft in 995. Due to its even structure, it retains good legibility even in small type sizes.

Tahoma has the same properties as Myriad Pro. Both typefaces complement each other well without competing visually.Tahoma is designated as the typeface to be used in electronic media since it is installed in virtually every operating system. This ensures that the appearanceof the EYCI2009 logo is uniform in all media.

The typeface family consists of the typeweights normal and bold. No other typefaces may be used. Tahoma is used in all digital and internally printed media.

ColoursMain colours/logo colours

The EYCI 2009 logo is made up of a total of 8 different colours. For print media, the CMYK colour mode based on Euroscala is to be used as are the special colour tones accordingto Pantone. The colours cyan, magenta, yellow and Key (black) used in CMYK mode provide the technical basis for modern four-colour printing. However, Pantone special colours are fixed, thus offering the advantage of strict international standardisation. The RGB colour mode is suitable for digital media. This colour model, based on the three primary colours red, green and blue, is especially suited to meeting the needs of electronic display

Summary of colours to be used for print andonline media:

Professional printing of information and communication materials: CMYK (Euroscala)or special colours (Pantone)Printing of digital and internally printed information and communication materials: RGB

The mention in grey can be use in different grey solutions. The simplest one is a dark grey composed of 60 % of black.

Central design element

Sparks and synapses

The spark/synapse is the central design element of the creativity and innovation corporate design. Placing those elements in different colours and sizes will directly make the design recognisable.

Depiction of the spark/ synapse in online media and PowerPoint presentations can be used. In print media, the sparks/synapses are placed in strategic places reinforcing the blend zone.

Based on the logo the below guidelines refer to two different sections of a page.

The first section, at the top of a page, represents the visual elements: an image of creativity or innovation in different fields such as culture, education, business, sustainable development etc.

The second section, at the bottom of a page is the text and information section. The light grey background is a neutral colour which makes it easier both to highlight the colour of the stars and synapses in the logo and to add white or grey stars as an element of contrast. It is also helpful to use a background for some printing processes. This can be done by adding light-coloured boxes as background (i.e. avoid transparent white).

Images and headline are not definitive
