3. Description

You have purchased a laser with separate electronics.

3.1 Laser safety

Your safety is of high importance to us. Please read and follow the following laser safety in-formation before using this product. Class 3b and 4 lasers are not intended for use of uneducated personal.

CAUTION NOTE The use of optical instruments with this product will increase Eye hazard. Do not shine laser in the direction of other people or at reflective surfaces that might cause exposure to the hu-man eye!

The laser radiation emitted from this unit may be harmful. Always follow these precautions: - Avoid direct exposure to the beam.

- Avoid looking at the beam directly.

- Be aware of and follow the warnings on the safety labels

- To completely switch off the unit, unplug the power.

- Make sure that the mechanical shutter of the laser is closed in all cases where the laser output radiation is not required.

Review of reported incidents has demonstrated that accidental eye and skin exposures to laser radiation, and accidents related to the ancillary hazards of a laser or laser sys-tem, are most often associated with personnel involved with the use of these systems under the following conditions: - Unanticipated eye exposure during alignment

- Misaligned optics and upwardly directed beams

- Available eye protection not used

- Equipment malfunction

- Improper methods of handling high voltage

- Unintentional exposure of unprotected personnel

These hazards can be avoided by a proper understanding of the equipment and by follow-ing safe procedures.

3.2 Eye protection

The greatest risk for personnel using lasers is eye injury to the cornea or retina from direct or reflected laser beams. Protective eyewear with adequate optical density (OD) at the par-ticular wavelength, which is used have to be clearly labeled and worn by all members of the operating team within the NHZ. It is recommended that built-in side shields are used to pro-tect the eyes from tangential beams and scattered reflections. Safety eyewear labeled with the appropriate wavelength and optical density should be available at the entry at every en-trance. Caution: Laser Safety Eyewear is not designed for looking directly at a laser beam.

3.3 Emergency Shutdown

An emergency shutdown switch must be available to the operator or the assistant for rapid emergency shutdown of the equipment. The interlock of the laser is intended to shut down laser power immediately

3.4 Controlled Area

Authorized personnel, upon entry to an area where lasers are used, should be provided with personal protective equipment (see Description of Facilities, above). Such controlled area should contain the NHZ, the extent of which is clearly delineated, and should be post-ed with appropriate laser warning signs specific to the wavelength being used (as de-scribed in ANSI Z136.3, Section 4.7). The laser should not be activated when it is neces-sary to open the door, if the Nominal Hazard Zone (NHZ) extends to the doorway. Glass windows will be covered with shades or filters of appropriate optical density whenev-er a fiberoptic laser system is operational. No one is allowed in a laser room unless proper-ly authorized and protected.

3.5 Warning Signs

Regulation Danger laser signs will be posted at eye level on all doors that access a room where Class 3b and/or Class 4 laser will be operated. These signs will state all required in-formation as described in the ANSI Z136.1 standard, and will be removed when the laser is not in use.

3.6 Fire Hazards

Class 4 laser systems represent a fire hazard. Enclosure of Class 4 laser beams can result in potential fire hazards if enclosure materials are likely to be exposed to irradiances ex-ceeding 10 W/cm2 or beam powers exceeding 0.5 W. The use of flame retardant materials, as defined by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), should be encouraged. Opaque laser barriers e.g., curtains, can be used to block the laser beam from exiting the work area during certain operations. While these barriers can be designed to offer a range of protection, they normally cannot withstand high irradiance levels for more than a few seconds without some damage, e.g., production of smoke, open fire, or penetration. Users of commercially available laser barriers should obtain appropriate fire prevention infor-mation from the manufacturer. Operators of Class 4 lasers should be aware that unprotected wire insulation and plastic tubing can catch fire from intense reflected or scattered beams, particularly from lasers op-erating at invisible wavelengths.

3.7 Explosion Hazards

High-pressure arc lamps, filament lamps, and capacitor banks in laser equipment shall be enclosed in housings, which can withstand the maximum explosive pressure resulting from component disintegration. The laser target and elements of the optical train which may shatter during laser operation shall also be enclosed or equivalently protected to prevent in-jury to operators and observers. Explosive reactions of chemical laser reactants or other la-ser gases may be a concern in some cases.

3.8 Electrical Hazards

Use of any electrical system may give rise to electrical hazards; consequently, proper grounding and insulation are imperative. Protection against accidental contact with ener-gized conductors by means of a barrier system is the primary methodology to prevent elec-tric shock accidents with laser equipment. Additional electrical safety requirements are im-posed upon laser devices, systems, and those who work with them, by the US Department of Labor, OSHA, the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70), and related state and local laws and regulations. These requirements govern equipment connection to the electrical utiliza-tion system, electrical protection parameters, and specific safety training. These require-ments must be observed with all laser installations. The following potential problems have frequently been identified during laser facility audits. 1. Uncovered electrical terminals 2. Improperly insulated electrical terminals 3. Hidden “power-up” warning lights 4. Lack of personnel trained in current cardiopulmonary resuscitation practices, or lack of

refresher training 5. “Buddy system” not being practiced during maintenance and service 6. Non earth-grounded or improperly grounded laser equipment 7. Nonadherence to the OSHA lock-out standard (29 CFR 1910.147) 8. Excessive wires and cables on floor that create fall or slip hazards

5. How to operate the laser

5.1 General Considerations

CAUTION NOTE

Take precautions to prevent back reflections into the laser head, even strong flash lights close to the laser can have an influence on the power control of the laser light.

5.2 First Installation

Please make sure the laser is protected against uncontrolled emission of laser light by turning the key of the key switch to the left (counter clock wise) and remove the key. You can find the key switch at the rear side of the laser controller. In the OFF state of the key switch the power supply of the laser diode is interlocked. Please close the shutter at the laser head as well.

Connect the laser head to the control box by plugging the female 15-pin SubD connector at the end of the laser cable to the control box. Take special care for ESD protection when handling the un-connected laser head. Screw in the connectors and tighten the screws to ensure good contact un-der all operating conditions.

Don’t bent the cable and make sure it is not damaged. If the cable is damaged don’t try to repair it. The laser must be shut down immediately.

Mount the laser head to a heat sink that ensures a good thermal coupling to the ground plate of the laser. The transport of thermal power can be improved by using heat conducting paste. The laser works reliably under thermal conditions specified in chapter 5.7

5.3 Operation

During operation an external system enable signal can be used to switch off the laser instantly (Pin 9 of the 9-pin Sub-D). Only a “logic one” at this pin turns on the supply of the laser diode. This pin can be used to remotely shut down the laser completely from operation. If this capability is not needed it is recommended to tie it permanently to “logic one” (5V with TTL, 24V with SPC). System enable and key switch must be enabled in order to turn on the laser light (“logic one” at pin 9 and the key switch must be closed) To switch the laser into normal operation apply the +24 Volt power supply to the laser (VCC to pin 6, GND to pin 5). The green LED will turn on and signal the “Power-ON” state. Then it will start blinking fast, thus signalling the “warm-up” phase. During this phase the built in thermo electric

temperature controller starts heating or cooling the laser diode. Upon reaching the operating tem-perature after some time the green LED will start blinking at a slower frequency unless system ena-ble and the key switch are enabled (“logic one” at pin 9 of Sub-D AND the key switch closed). The yellow LED turns to a static ON state, signalling that the laser is emitting. In this state the laser can be switched on and off by applying the TTL modulation signal to Pin 8 of the Sub-D connector. A “logic one” turns on the laser light. Note: In SPC laser modules, the system enable (pin-9) and trigger (pin-8) signals have a separated ground (pin4-GNDIO) from the +24V power supply ground (pin5-GND). Please use different grounds.

CAUTION NOTE

Please make sure no person is exposed to the beam when turning on the laser light!

5.4 Modulation of the laser

RS232:

The ZQ is a CW laser with a digital enable input (“Laser-On” = pin-8 of the Sub-D connector). To turn on the laser light a “logic one” must be applied to this control input.

RS485:

The ZQ is a CW laser with a differential digital trigger input (“Laser-On” = pin-2 and pin-9). To turn on the laser light a “logic one” must be applied to this control input (pin-9 = 5V, pin-2 = 0V). To turn it off a “logic zero” must be applied (pin-9 = 0V, pin-2 = 5V)

The laser is capable of digital modulation up to 10 kHz TTL and 1 kHz SPC.

5.5 Software

The ZQ laser has RS232 / RS485 serial interfaces. The user can access various parameters with any ordinary terminal program or use the GUI from the USB stick. For RS232 use the following pins: TXD pin-2, RXD pin-3 For RS485 use the following pins: Data_A pin-3, Data_B pin-8 The user can access various parameters with any ordinary terminal program. Please setup your terminal program with these parameters: Terminal program parameters: Transmission rate: 9600 baud Coding: 8N1 The following read ASCII coded commands are provided (note the colon): “ROPLD:” -> read operating hours of the laser diode [h],[min] “ROPGE:” -> read general operating hours [h],[min] “RCILDDAC:” -> read calibrated Laser diode DAC-Value @ current laser power “RILDDAC:” -> read current Laser diode Current DAC-Value @ current laser power “RMAXBLTMP:” -> read lowest (min) block temperature [°C] “RMINBLTMP:” -> read highest (max) block temperature [°C] “RBLTMP:” -> current block temperature [°C] “RSNLD:” -> read serial number of laser source “WLPPERCn:” -> random change of laser power [%] n: 0,1,2…100 “RLPPERC:” -> read current laser power [%] “WSAVEP:” -> save previously set random laser power [%] to EEPROM. “RVERSION:” -> read Firmware Version The response is transmitted as readable ASCII characters.

5.6 Failure signal

The Failure output signal indicates states of the laser where normal operation is not possible: it is at “logic one” under the following conditions:

- during the warm-up phase, - when end-of life of the laser diode is reached, please prepare for a spare unit to prevent

machine down time - Over temperature or under temperature state of the thermo electric temperature controller

The laser is turned off when a failure state is entered, except for the warm up phase failure. This will not lead to a shutdown. Pin-1 (VCCIO) can be used to define the voltage level of the fail out signal. If not connected (de-fault) the logic one level is +5V. Please note that certain failure conditions are signalled by the LED’s at the rear side of the control-ler box as well.

5.7 Environment and max. Ratings

Your ZQ Laser operates fine in a wide environment temperature range. Since most of the thermal energy dissipates through the base plate of the laser Head the max rating is defined at this position.

Max. Operation temperature: -10°…+40°C

The control box is specified for ambient (air-) temperatures of -20...+60°C.

5.8 Maintenance, Service and cleaning

This laser module contains no user serviceable parts. Occasionally the optics may need cleaning depending on environmental conditions. When cleaning is required, the use of clean, compressed air is recommended to blow the optics clean. If com-pressed air fails, clean lens carefully with alcohol and a lint free rag or Q-tip.

6.3 Power supply

A power supply is not included in the delivery. To operate the laser a sufficient power supply must be connected to the laser. The power supply is specified with: Power supply (V+, GND): +24 VDC +/- 10% Max. supply current: 3A Any power supply you may use shall follow the safety regulation and should show a CE or UL sign.

6.4 LED signaling on rear side

The LED’s on the rear side of the laser controller box indicate the following conditions: green LED statically OFF: no power green LED blinking fast: warm-up phase green LED blinking slowly: Failure condition (e.g. system enable disabled, key switch

open, under / overtemperature or laser diode approaching end-of-life)

green LED statically ON: Laser-enabled yellow LED statically ON: Laser is emitting yellow LED statically OFF: Laser is NOT emitting

A typical power-up sequence would look like this:

1. Turn on the power supply: The green LED starts blinking fast. 2. Upon reaching the target temperature the green LED blinks slowly. 3. If system enable is on and the key switch is closed the green LED is statically ON. 4. When the laser light is turned on by applying a “logic one” to the modulation input, the yellow

LED turns statically ON. 5. In case of a failure condition the green LED will again start blinking slowly.

6.5 System enable and keyswitch

The system enable and the key switch are external safety systems. The laser will not emit light un-less they are properly activated.
