2 Safety PrecautionsBeforeusingtheTRAKTORAUDIO 6,thoroughlyreadthefollowinginstructions.Thiswillprovide you with important information needed for setting up and using your TRAKTOR AUDIO 6safely.

IncaseyouobtainedtheTRAKTORAUDIO 6aspartofaTRAKTORsoftwarepackage,theboxcontainsapowersupplyforthesoundcard.Ifnot,youcanpurchasethepowersupplysepa-ratelyontheNIwebshop.Thepowersupplyisnotmandatoryforoperatingthesoundcard,itisonlyneededforusingtheTA6instand-alonemode(withoutemployingacomputer).

2.1 RiskofDamagingyourHearingTheTRAKTORAUDIO 6, incombinationwithanamplifier,headphonesorspeakers,canproducesoundsindecibelrangesthatmaycausehearingdamage.Foryourprotection,setallvolumelevelstoaminimumbeforeusingTRAKTORAUDIO 6.Graduallyraisethevolumecontrols while music is playing to set the desired listening level. 2.2 CautionIt is important you read and understand the following instructions to make sure the TRAK-TORAUDIO 6oranydeviceconnectedwillnotbedamagedduringusageormaintenance:

• Donotusetheproduct’spowersupplyifitappearstobemalfunctioning.Discontinueuseimmediatelyandhavethedeviceinspectedbyqualifiedservicepersonnel.

• DonotconnecttheTRAKTORAUDIO 6topowersuppliesoftypesnotidenticaltotheone delivered with the device.

• DonotopentheTRAKTORAUDIO 6orattempttodisassembleormodifyanyinternalparts.TheTRAKTORAUDIO 6doesnotcontainanyuser-serviceableparts.Ifthedeviceappearstobemalfunctioning,discontinueuseimmediatelyandhavethedeviceinspectedbyqualifiedservicepersonnel.

3 InstallationIn orderfortheTRAKTORAUDIO 6toworkproperlywithyourcomputer,thefollowingtwoprograms are automatically installed on your system during the software installation process:

• TheTRAKTORAUDIO 6driver.Thishandlesthecommunicationbetweentheaudiointerface and your computer.

• The Control Panel software: • InWindows,theControlPanelsoftwareallowsyoutoadjustperformancesettings,

preampsettings,toperformdiagnostics,andtoconfigurethesoundcard’sportsettings.

• InMacOS X,theperformancesettingsandpreampsettingsarecontrolledfromthesystem’sAudioMIDIsetup,locatedintheUtilitiesfolder.Theportconfigurationagain is accessed through the Control Panel software.

!%IfyouarefamiliarwiththeinstallationprocedureandthegeneralconfigurationofUSB-driven audio devices on your computer, you can skip this chapter and continue withregistration chapter 3.4.

3. Double-clicktheinstallerfile:“TraktorAudio 6InstallerMac.mpkg.”Theinstallationwillstart,andawelcomescreenwillappear.

4. Click Continue to proceed.

5. ReadtheSoftwareLicenseAgreementandclickContinue to proceed.

9. MacOS Xwillpromptyoutoauthenticatetheinstallation.Enterthenameandcor-responding password of a user with administrator privileges.

10. Oncetheinstallationhasbeenperformedsuccessfully,youwillbepromptedtorestartyour Mac. Click the Restartbuttontocompletetheinstallation.

3.3 ConnectingtheHardwareBeforeconnectingthehardware,makesureyouhaveinstalledallsoftwarecomponentsasdescribedinchapter3.2.Onceyouhaveinstalledthesoftware:

!!Steps1 to3areonly relevant if youobtained theTA6aspartofaTRAKTORsoftwarepackage;inthatcase,theboxcontainsaDCpowersupplyforpoweringthesoundcard.Thepowersupplyisnotmandatoryforoperatingthesoundcard,itisonlyneededforusingtheTA6instand-alonemode.YoucanpurchasethepowersupplyseparatelyintheNIwebshop.

1. Insertthefixtureofthematchingadapterplugintothecorrespondingpartonthepowersupply,thenpresstheadapterplugcarefullyagainstthepowersupplyuntilaclickconfirmstheadapterplughassnappedintoplace.

2. Connect the power supply to a power outlet.

3. Connecttheplugattheendofthepowersupply’scabletothepowersupplyconnectorontherearpanelofyourTA6.

4. ConnecttheTA6toaUSB2.0portonyourcomputerusingtheUSBcableincludedinthe package.

→ Afterconnectingthesoundcardtoyourcomputer,theUSBdriverswillbeinstalledonyourcomputerautomaticallyandtheTRAKTORAUDIO 6soundcardshouldbereadyto use straight away. Proceed with registration chapter 3.4. ForWindowsXP,seeseparatesection below.

XPUsersOnly:CompletingtheDeviceDriverInstallationUpondetectionofthenewhardware,Windowscompletesthedevicedriverinstallation:

1. WindowsXPwillidentifytheTRAKTORAUDIO 6soundcard.ChooseNo if Windows asks you to search the internet for a driver.

2. Duringdevicedriverinstallation,aWindowsmessagemaycallattentiontothefactthattheTRAKTORAUDIO 6driverhasnotpassedWindowsLogoTesting.Thisisanexpectedbehavioranddoesnotindicateaproblem.Toproceed,clickContinue Anyway.

→ Yourcomputerwilldisplaya“New Hardware found”message.Subsequently,anothermes-sage reading “Your devices are ready to use” will notify you that the device driver installation was completed successfully.

► Afteryouhavecompletedthedriverinstallationprocedure,thedriverinstallerwillstartagain.Thisisintendedbehavior.Repeatthepreviousstepsinordertoinstallallrequired driver components.

→ Allsoftwarecomponentsarenowinstalled,andtheTRAKTORAUDIO 6shouldbeready to use. Proceed with registration chapter 3.4.

3.4 RegistrationRegisteringtheTRAKTORAUDIO 6isnotmandatory.Nevertheless,registrationisrecom-mendedforsupportinquiriesorincaseoftheft.Asaregistereduser,youwillalsobenefitfrom exclusive incentives and insider specials.

!!ToregisteryourTRAKTORAUDIO 6ontheNativeInstrumentswebsite,youwillneedtheserialnumberfromtheproductactivationsticker.ThisislocatedonthebottompanelofyourTRAKTORAUDIO 6.

4 BasicConfigurationIn order for the TRAKTORAUDIO 6 to operate as your computer’s default audio outputdevice,youwillneedtoselectitwithinthesystem’saudiopreferences.Findtherelevantinstructions in chapter 4.1.

For informationonusing theTRAKTORAUDIO 6asyourmusic software’sdefaultaudiooutputdevice,seechapter4.2.

The STATUS LEDs allow you to quickly identify the status of any connections going into and comingoutof thedevice,especially in low lightingenvironments.A listof the individualLEDsandtheirfunctions:

whentheincomingsignalisclipping(tooloud). • The THRU indicator lights orange when a port is set to send the signal of its input

• Sample Rate:Chooseasampleratethatiscompatiblewithyourmusicapplicationandbestsuitedtoyourcomputingpower.Ahighersamplerateimprovestheaudioquality,butalsocauseshigherCPUload.Bydefault,thesamplerateissetto44100 Hz(CDquality).

!%Thesampleratedefineshowmanysamplesareplayed/recordedperonesecondofsound.Ahigher sample rate results inhigher audioquality;however,44100 Hz (asused forrecordingaudioCDs)isacommonsettingandabsolutelysufficientformosttasks.IfyourfinaldestinationisCD,youshouldusethissettingoramultipleofit(88200 Hz).Forabetterunderstanding:48000 HzisusedbyDATrecordersandforDVD(films)recording.96000 HzandhigherratesaretypicalforDVD,HDDVD,andBlu-rayDiscaudiorecord-ing.YoushouldbeawarethatahighersampleratealsocauseshigherCPUload.

• Process Buffer:Lowerthebuffersizevalueforaquickerresponsetimefromyourcom-puter to audio software actions.

!%Whenconvertingaudio informationtodigitalandviceversa, theaudiodriverneedstostorethedatainbufferpackages(audiobuffers),whicharethensenttoandprocessedbytheCPU.Thehigherthebuffersize,thelongerittakesforasignaltofinallyarriveattheoutputasaudio.Youmightexperiencethisasadelaybetweenthetimeyouhitakeyon your computer or controller and when you actually hear the sound. This delay is called latency.Aruleofthumb:loweringbuffersizeresultsinlowerlatency.However,therearemorefactorstolatencythanbuffersizealone(e.g.,CPUspeedandRAMsize).Startoffwithahigherbuffersizesettingandgraduallydecreasethevalueuntilyoufindtheperfectbalancebetweenaudioqualityandsystemperformance.Ifyouexperiencecracklingattheaudiooutput,thechosenbuffersizeisverylikelytoolowforyourcomputer’sCPUtohandleconsideringthatalowerbuffersizecauseshigherCPUload.

Device Monitor Section

The Device Monitorsectiondisplaysinformationabouttheaudiointerface’sprocessingstatusandyoursystem’soutputlatency.It has two displays:

• Processing State:Theprocessingstatemonitorprovidesfeedbackonthecurrentstatusofthedevice.Therearethreepossiblestatusmessages: • Idle:interfaceisconnected,butnoclientdeliversaudiodata. • Streaming: driver is working and processing audio data. • Panic:driverstoppedstreaming.ToomanyUSBI/Oerrorsoccurredintheinterface

communication.• Output Latency: Shows the amount of output latency in milliseconds.

8 TroubleshootingTheinformationprovidedinthischaptershouldhelpyoutosolvemostoftheproblemsyoumayencounterwhileyouareusingtheTRAKTORAUDIO 6.

8.1 SolvingHardware-relatedProblemsAll Native Instruments products are extensively tested in real life situations during the de-velopmentphase.However,ifyouencounteranyproblemswithyourhardware,pleasecheckthe following points:

• Verifythatyouhaveinstalledthelatestdriverandthelatestsoftwareupdate.ChecktheNativeInstrumentswebsiteforfurtherinformation.

• MakesuretheTRAKTORAUDIO 6interfaceisconnectedtoaUSB2.0portonyourcomputer(seealso8.3).

• MakesuretheTRAKTORAUDIO 6isconnecteddirectlytoaUSBportofthecomputerandnotthroughaUSBhub(seealso8.3).

• TrychangingouttheUSBcable(seealso8.3).

• DisconnectallotherUSBdevicesfromthecomputer(exceptkeyboard/mouse).

• TryusinganotherUSBportonyourcomputer(seealso8.3).

8.2 HowtoCheckWhethertheTRAKTORAUDIO 6DriversareInstalled Correctly

WindowsOpen Start > All Programs > Native Instruments > TRAKTOR AUDIO 6 Driver. There you will findthehelperapplicationControlPanel.Makesurethatthedeviceisconnectedtothecom-puterandopentheControlPanel.Ifallthedrop-downmenusaregrayedout(i.e.,therearenopresetsinthepresetdrop-downlistandnosampleratevaluestochoosefrom)theremustbesomethingwrongwiththeconnection.IftheTRAKTOR AUDIO 6 Driver entry in the Native InstrumentsfolderoftheStartMenuismissing,thedriverismostprobablynotinstalled.

• Ifthedriverisnotinstalled,youcaninstallitasdescribedinchapter3.

• Ifthedriverisnotrecognized,checkyourUSB2.0connectionasdescribedinchapter8.3.

• AsanyotherUSBdevice,thedriverinstallsexactlyforoneUSBport.IfyouconnecttheTRAKTORAUDIO 6toanotherport,astandardWindowsdialogopensinwhichyou can install the driver to that port. If you have previously installed the driver on your computeronce,Windowswillfindtherightdriversitselfoncethatyoustartthedriverinstallationprocedure.Ifyoucanceltheinstallationprocedure,thedriverwillnotbeinstalled and the interface will not work on that port.

• Ifyoudonotknowwhetherdriverswereinstalledcorrectly,itisadvisabletostartthesetupprogramoftheTRAKTORAUDIO 6again(seechapter3).Ifthesetupprogramstatesthatitwillfirstuninstallthedrivers,youalreadyhaveinstalledthedriversonyourcomputer. In this case you can connect the device to any other USB port and Windows willfindtherightdriverwheninstallingtheTRAKTORAUDIO 6onanotherUSBport.

MacOS XOnMacOS X,opentheSystemPreferencesfortheNativeInstrumentsUSBAudioControlPanel icon. Open the control panel to see whether the device is detected.

• Ifthedeviceisnotdetected,valueswillappeargrayedout.IftheNativeInstrumentsUSBAudioControlPaneliconismissinghere,thedriverisprobablynotinstalled.

• Ifthedriverisnotinstalled,youcaninstallitasdescribedinchapter2.

• Ifthedriverisnotrecognized,checkyourUSB2.0connectionasdescribedinchapter8.3.

8.3 USBTroubleshootingIfyouexperienceproblemscausedbytheUSBconnectionbetweentheTRAKTORAUDIO 6andyourcomputer,checkthefollowingchaptersfirst;severalpossiblesourcesforUSBis-sues are covered here.

8.3.1 USB 2.0 required

TheTRAKTORAUDIO 6isaUSB2.0interfaceandwillnotworkatallonaUSB1.0/1.1port.

8.3.2 Try another USB cable

AbadUSBcablecanberesponsibleforaudiodropoutsandotherconnectivityproblems.Itisrecommendedthatyoutryusingadifferentcableifyouexperiencedifficulties.Also,makesuretouseacablebearingtheofficialUSBlogo.

8.3.3 UsingapoweredUSB2.0hub

10.1 About Latency and BuffersWhenconvertingaudioinformationtodigitalandviceversa,theaudiodriverneedstostorethedatainbufferpackages(audiobuffers)whicharethensenttoandprocessedbytheCPUofyourcomputer.Thehigherthebuffersize,thelongerittakesforasignaltofinallyarriveattheoutputasaudio.Youmightexperiencethisaslateresponsebetweenhittingakeyona controller which controls music software on your computer and hearing the sound at the output.Fortunately,withtoday’scomputersandlow-latencysoundcarddrivers,thisdelayisusuallyverylow(e.g.,threemillisecondsisaboutthesamedelaycausedbyfingerssnappingonemeterawayfromyourears).LatencymustbekeptatminimuminordertomakesoftwareinstrumentsandDJapplicationsplayable.

HowLowCanYouGo?1.5msof latencyapproaches the theoreticalminimumbecause itwillalways takesometimetoprocessinformationinacomputer.Notethatultra-lowbuffersizesettings(aswellashighersamplerates)makeyourcomputerworkharder,whichcanadverselyaffecttheperformance.
