SOFTWARE

Software for e-learning: Moodle (a free and open-source learning management system)

PROJECT COURSE WEBSITE - https://moodle.kpms.cz/

Didactic rules for creating an e-learning course:

Introduction – the goal is to motivate students, to encourage their curiosity. It is inserted

including other instructions at introductory part of each course.

Formulation of goals – the goal is defined at the beginning of each chapter. We address the

group, not the person (you will learn, understand, manage to, try out…)

Options in the text – highlighting of key words, pictures, hypertext links with moderation

Using hypertext – enables to skip chapters, return, choose related information (there is no

need to re-write the text; available resources are used)

Multimedia components – photographs, videos, animations, maps, thanks to which the text

is more colourful and enables better remembering

Control tasks

o Range of options (forums, a chat, tests with automatic evaluation of answers etc.)

o Independent and supporting group work to help interaction among participants

o To implement more easy tasks rather than one difficult preferrably

o The tutor has an option to evaluate verbally

Study materials

o Shorter, denser, easier to understand

o The text is evenly batched (divided into chapters)

o It has bold graphic division (it attracts attention)

o It contains short paragraphs without long complicated sentences and unclear

wording

Feedback – satisfaction of course participants

Dictionary – a set of terms that are closely related to the course content

COURSE STRUCTURE

All courses have a united structure:

Module Objectives

Tutor's introductory word for course participants

Chapters

Courses usually have 3 to 4 thematic chapters. The chapters are numbered as follows: 1.

Final evaluation

The final test is to check the knowledge of the whole course.

Questionnaire for course participants

The questionnaire is intended to express the participant's opinion. Its aim is to find out the ratings,

comments, suggestions of the participants on the course (content, structure, tutor, clarity).

CHAPTER STRUCTURE

Each chapter has a basic structure:

Lesson - tutorial text

Suggestions and best practices - this section is only included in some chapters

Assessment task - participant could check their understanding of the chapter

in forum/chat or at other activities

Sources and additional materials/Useful links

PARTICIPANTS

The tutor can see the list of participants in their course.

LIST OF COURSE PARTICIPANTS

The tutor can see the list of course participants. It can be used in several ways:

1) Working with the List

Here several features can be used. The most important thing for teachers is Send a Message.

You can send it to all participants or just selected ones.

Click to go to the

list of participants

ROLE OF THE TUTOR AT E-LEARNING

E-learning is an education process in which information and communication technologies are used in

accordance with ethical principles. However, the role of the tutor (= lecturer, teacher in e-learning

environment) is also necessary in this form of education. It is not enough to know how modern

technologies work but it is also necessary to know how to use these technologies in teaching.

Tutor in e-learning course mostly leads the learner through the process of education, facilities and

directs the study. The main activities of the tutor include:

To motivate and awaken students´curiosity and imagination

When communicating with participants address the group, not an individual (i.e. you will

try, you will understand, you have learned, we will have a look at) – the participant of

e-learning will have a feel of being a part of a group, not that it is them and a PC.

To answer participants´questions – react to messages and suggestions 3 days at the latest

To read finished tasks and write them feedback – there are some tasks at the end of some

chapters which should lead the participant to reflection. The feedback contains thanking for

the activity, short evaluation of the content of the answer.

To stimulate discussion in discussion forums – there are discussion forums at some chapters.

Discussion participants need not be online at the same time. The tutor follows the discussion,

appraises their activity and their opinions. The role of the tutor is to give impulses to sustain

the discussions, to clarify ambiguities in responses and to encourage participants who do not

contribute to the debate.

To see to it that all participants work – to check the activity of course participants on an

ongoing basis. In the Protocol section, to track attendees´ visits, their activity and fulfillment

of their tasks.

12

To individually encourage inactive participants to work – contacting the participants who

have been inactive for a longer period by sending a message asking how the tutor can be of

assistance in studying.

Reminding the participants the approaching end of the course – a week before the planned

ending of the course, to alert the participants to this fact, to offer support and to motivate

them to successfully complete the course.

Reminding the participants to fill in final evaluation after finishing their course – to ask

participants to make a study assessment. At the same time, to point out that filling in is

anonymous.

To communicate with the course administrator in case of technical problems – contact the

Moodle system administrator Hana Vývodová ([email protected]) in case of technical

problems
