AUGUST 2010
ABOUT THE COLLEGE
The College of Visual Arts is a private, accredited, four-year college of art and design offering
a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in fine arts, graphic design, illustration, interdisciplinary design
studies, and photography. The fine arts degree offers concentrations in drawing, painting,
printmaking, and sculpture. The interdisciplinary design studies degree offers a concentration in
fashion. Founded in 1924, the college is located in the thriving urban residential areas of historic
Summit Avenue and Ramsey Hill in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
www.cva.edu
in 2009–2010 cva
expanded its horizons
in the Midwest and
internationally.
New lifelong learning
summer workshops
were introduced at
Stout’s Island Lodge
on Red Cedar Lake in
Wisconsin. Thanks to
cva faculty, workshops
which included painting
from the landscape,
nature journaling, and
digital photography, were
extremely well received.
Message from the President
The island provided a
wonderful backdrop for
new friends and alumni
to learn and relax in this
historic setting.
This past year cva sent
its first student, Nicole
Larson, to Parsons Paris
to study fashion design
for her junior year.
Nicole’s year abroad has
prepared her for her
capstone experience at
cva. She will study with
local fashion designer
and new faculty member,
Jessika Madison-Kennedy,
and complete her thesis
work. Currently there
are several cva students
preparing to study
fashion at Parsons Paris.
Most recently, I
participated in a
symposium with an
international panel
from China, the United
Kingdom, and France
at Parsons Paris. Our
conversation, as art
and design educators,
explored the past, present,
and future of our various
programs. cva has been
invited to continue the
conversation at next
year’s Designer’s Days
event in Paris.
As cva continues
to provide new
opportunities to our
students and the
community, I hope you
stay in touch through
this newsletter and our
website at www.cva.edu.

cva scholarship
endowment fund
At the College of
Visual Arts, we strive to
recognize both academic
and artistic merit of our
students. In order to do
so, we have a variety of
scholarship and grant
programs awarded to
incoming and current
students. This spring,
cva launched a new
Scholarship Endowment
Fund with a gift of
seed money from
donors Nancy and Dick
Nicholson. The fund is
managed by The Saint
Paul Foundation and will
generate scholarships
for incoming first year
students. To learn more

viewbook wins
multiple awards
Thanks to the work
of graphic design
adjunct instructor Jo
Davison and Larsen,
cva published a new
admissions viewbook
in the fall of 2009. The
team of writers and
photographers who
worked on this project
have created an award-
winning brochure
that has received the
following accolades
from peers and design
organizations.
The tabloid-sized
publication, which
employs large close-up
photos of artists’ tools
and invites prospective
students to “be
visual,” was picked for
exhibition in the 2010
AIGA Minnesota
Design Show and
the national 365:
AIGA Annual Design
Competition 31.
The viewbook design
was also selected
for inclusion in
the 51st Design
Annual published
by Communication
Arts magazine. This
prestigious annual
compendium of juried
work features the best in
visual communications
from around the world.
new chair of
illustration
announced
James O’Brien has been
appointed as the new
Chair of Illustration.
He is a practicing
illustrator and artist
whose client list includes:
American Express,
Bank of America, Rand
McNally, Microsoft,
Delta Airlines, Sears,
Hewlett-Packard, Oracle,
McGraw-Hill, Scholastic
Press, Smithsonian,
Business Week, Fortune,
Harvard Business Review,
Newsweek, US News &
World Report, Computer
World, PC Magazine,
Entertainment Weekly,
Wine Spectator, The Wall
Street Journal, The San
Francisco Chronicle, and
The New York Times.
Using Adobe Photoshop
and Illustrator, O’Brien’s
work intermixes found,
made, and digital
elements. “I use a
digital collage method,
arranging elements
that are digitally and
traditionally cut, drawn,
and painted. The content
of my work is quiet,
contemplative with
hints of unease and
disorder and a sense of
impending movement
and change. Chance
is a vital part of my
process, a collaboration
between my intentional
implementation of
media and unexpected
(and occasionally
impelled) accidents.”
O’Brien received a bfa
at the Minneapolis
College of Art and
Design, an ma at
Syracuse University,
and an mfa at the
University of Hartford.
His work has been
recognized by American
Illustration, Society of
Illustrators (New York),

Student Corner
oh what a year it
was! student life
at cva continues
to grow. In April the
Student Council and
the Office for Student
Life hosted another
spring dance. This year’s
theme was Monsters and
Space. There was great
food, great costumes,
great dance music, and
lots of fun. Thanks this
year to Rudy Arnold for
taking some amazing

the president’s
office and office
for student life
are introducing two
new professional
development
opportunities for
cva students. The
Senior Banquet, held
the evening before
graduation, gave
students an opportunity
to meet members of the
cva Board of Trustees
and the Professional
Advisory Committee in
a formal dinner setting.
This event will become a
regular part of our senior
graduation celebration.
This fall cva juniors
will participate in an
Etiquette Lunch with a
coach to guide students
in proper dinner
etiquette needed to
make a memorable first
impression.
cva’s scholarship
award ceremony keeps
getting bigger and better.
The 2010 ceremony was
held at the University
Club and more than
thirty scholarships
were given out at the
evening celebration.
We are proud of these
high achieving students
and grateful for the
generous donors who
make it possible for cva
to award scholarships in
recognition of student
excellence.
this spring the cva
drum circle got off the
ground. Students met
weekly for six weeks
with facilitator Marc
Anderson. Drumming
offers great stress relief
and builds community
and friendship. Watch
for drumming to start up
again next year and join
us if you can!
in april the creative
arts high school in
Saint Paul hosted an
exhibition of student
artwork that ranged
from kindergarten
through beyond mfa.
Eleven students from
cva had pieces in the
