Words from Our President I acknowledge the traditional Custodians of Country throughout the Manning Valley, the Biripi People, and acknowledge their continuing connection to land, culture and community. We pay respect to Elders, past present and future and extend that respect to all Aboriginal people. Welcome to all members for this our first term for 2013. We look forward to another year of belonging to a U3A which promotes a friendly, supportive attitude to all members, new and old. Thank you to the Committee, who work tirelessly behind the scenes to maintain a cohesive group. A special thanks to all Course Leaders, for without them, there would be no Manning Valley U3A. The members who take on tasks such as preparing the “tea breaks”, the tidying up afterwards & assisting the group leaders wherever possible also maintain the health of our U3A. The AGM will be conducted on Monday 29th April. There will be several vacancies in the Executive of the Committee and we encourage members to nominate themselves (and gain a seconder) or nominate another member. I wish all members a happy, friendly Term One for 2013 and look forward to meeting with you at activities during this term Merlin Freeman

Christmas Concert 2012 How fabulous was the Concert!! A full house of enthusiastic members and visitors who gave all the performers a thoroughly well-deserved ovation for each item. It was truly an event that exemplified the spirit of U3A: the sharing of skills and appreciation shown for them. Participants (in order of appearance) were the Folk Dancers (who now have two enthusiastic men in their number), the Silver Tones Choir, three of the Closet Dramatists (Play Reading group), the Silver Beats and Silver Strummers, the Spaniards (Let’s Speak Spanish class) and, of course, Santa Claus (AKA Ron Warner) and his “elves” giving out lollies. The entire afternoon, complete with sumptuous refreshments, ran like clockwork, thanks to Val Stack and her team of volunteers. Well done all! We’ll be back next year! Photos P16

End-0f-Year Luncheon 2012 Wow! What a wonderful turn-out at the end-of-year luncheon to thank our course leaders, 31 of whom were able to attend with the rest to be our guests at the Term 1 Luncheon, 2013. Once again the lamb shank option proved popular - so popular, in fact, that I’m expecting it to eclipse fish, the usual favourite, VERY soon! Photos P16 Hey, what if I call the Term 4 Luncheon the “CLancy Luncheon (CL = Course Leaders) & Term 1 Luncheon “The Overflow Luncheon”.

Christmas Day Lunch 2012 Another success to conclude the year! More than thirty U3Aers, Senior Cits and others joined together on Christmas Day at Ormsby House for a feast of ham, chicken, salads, Christmas pud & brandy butter, fruit salad, ice cream - all washed down with a refreshing punch. Santa hats with names, trivia games and the distribution of gifts contributed by each participant made for a merry day of food and friendship for those who may well have had no company otherwise. Many hands (male) made light work of the clean-up and all left replete, happy & clutching a “doggy bag” and pressies! Great job, Santa’s elves!!

4.

Margaret Sparkes-Carroll - Vice-President In 1974 Graeme and I and our son, Cameron, arrived in the Manning Valley after 4 years in Papua New Guinea. Although we both grew up in Sydney we felt it was time for a change. Our daughter, Belinda was born in Taree. Graeme continued work as a surveyor and I, having taught in Sydney and Papua New Guinea, continued to teach both as a classroom teacher and teacher librarian.

During my time as a teacher librarian I established school libraries at Old Bar Public, Tinonee Public and the ‘new’ (1987) school in Wingham. It was an absolute delight to be able to purchase all those brand new books for the children! While at Wingham I instigated the Philosophy for Children Program, a marvellous program which continued for 15 years. I also co-ordinated debating and inter-school chess. Retirement gave me the chance to participate in other pursuits and I have thoroughly enjoyed U3A activities – learning mahjong , being involved in play reading and organising the Sat’die Card Sharks’ Five Hundred group. I have also enjoyed listening to wonderful authors explain of the development of their stories, travellers of their adventures in other lands, marvellous music and an explanation of ‘the idiosyncrasies of our fascinating mother tongue’. I became part of the Management Committee in 2012 and support Paul with the Public Relations portfolio. I also became Vice President during the year. Joining the committee has given me a real insight into and appreciation of the huge amount of work that is undertaken in order to keep the organisation running smoothly. I hope to be able to continue to give support to other committee members and enjoy the wonderful activities that U3A offers to our community.

Robyn Brown - Commissariat & Theatre Parties I have lived most of my life in The Forster/ Manning area. I was educated at Forster and then at “Calrossy” in Tamworth. During my working days, I was a Medical Secretary to Chris Mooney, the Chief Executive Officer of the Manning Base Hospital (as it was then called). I married Dennis, the Chief Pathology Scientist and then had to leave the hospital as they did not employ married women!! After I had two children, I rejoined the medical workforce, setting up the management of the pathology service for Dr Geoff Fuller and then for fourteen years, the gynaeo-obstetric practice for Dr Philip Walkom. I was a keen golfer until we discovered cruising - it is a great way to see the world! We were introduced to U3A when Dennis joined the Choir and we discovered the interesting classes that U3A has to offer, especially talks such as the Time Traveller and Authors of the Manning. I am the Commissariat – that is, the Biscuit Lady – and I organise the seats for U3A members at the MEC and other local venues. I am enjoying being part of the U3A team.

Please contact me, as Welfare Officer, if you are aware of a member who would appreciate contact or a card from U3A. Let us show support for each other when we are ill, stressed or grieving; let us show our happiness for each other when we are celebrating a happy occasion. It’s all part of the MV U3A Family.

Are You Interested? A Second Book Reading Club - members who are unable to attend Tuesday morning Book Marks meetings might like to meet on another day(s). If you would be interested in joining such a group, please answer question 7 on Page 1 of your Enrolment Form.

This Term Beginners’ Ukulele

has a change of day, venue and tutor! Monday mornings (9.30 am to 11.30 pm) at the Church of Christ (Victoria Street) and Chris Cavanagh will be in charge.(Photo 2, P16) .(See Page 7)

Beginners’ Bridge This year’s course will be a four-week one with two two-hour sessions per week ie eight sessions in all. John Scott, the tutor, feels that such a concentrated dose of learning & putting theory into practice gives a stronger foundation to become a happy player. (See Page 7)

On Council Matters Most people whinge about GTCC, especially after rain! Ron Posselt, Exec Leader, Service Delivery, will explain what is entailed in road management and other matters. Bring along your questions for a (civilised) discussion of the problems. (See Page 7)

Polymer Clay Jewellery Course PCJC has had a busy and exciting year with many developing a lifetime hobby. As it is difficult to teach different levels in one group, the next new intake will be in Term 2. Those who are interested in seeing what it entails, are welcome to visit on a Tues afternoon.(Page 8)

The History of English Spelling What did indeed go wrong?? You (and most others) had sore knuckles and brains from the dreaded daily spelling tests of our schooldays. More good luck than brilliant scholarship if you made it without a red cross! Ern will help you understand why you are a rotten speller … You won’t be any better at it, but at least you’ll understand why!See Page 10

How to Manage Digital Photos This is a beginners’ course on how to load & edit photos on your computer. You need to be able to turn on the computer and be fairly familiar with the keyboard. As vacancies are limited, ring as soon as you receive this newsletter. Maximum number 7 (See P 10)

Art in the Gallery Our Art-in-the-Gallery lovers enjoyed a varied and fulfilling 2012 in our Regional Gallery with wonderful and enlightening exhibitions throughout the year. Once again, Sue our Curator and Jane our Assistant Curator gave us so much pleasure with their insight and expertise during these various exhibitions. They have quite an exciting year planned, with some little extras thrown in for 2013, which I am sure will please all our followers. News of all these events will be published in our Newsletter throughout 2013. (See Page 11)

Summer Swimming School this year will be for those who can swim but want to improve their strokes & breathing. It will be held at the Manning Aquatic Centre, North Taree. Please note that there will be a payment of $10 to U3A as a contribution to the cost of hiring the lane each week, as well as the usual weekly $3 (discounted) fee paid directly to the pool as you arrive - your total cost for the term will be $34. (See Page 11)

Four Day Trip to Goulburn It should be a great trip - so much to see and do in and around Goulburn! And you get a say in the program! Although I am notifying our neighbouring U3As, in the past only conferees, no tourists have come along. I need at least twenty tourists to make it viable. See Page 13

Terry’s Tours have returned this term with three venues, all in secure locations (no crazy shooters!). Trial Bay Gaol & Cattai Wetlands will be run on two dates each - when you complete questions (Q4, Q5) on P1 of your enrolment form, please indicate if you prefer one but are able to go on either day -it makes it easier for me to organise. Note that the Innes Ruins trip is on one day only, with a maximum 30 people. Details: Page 14

Looking Ahead - Later Local History

In Terms 2 and 3 local history will be back on the U3A menu. Term 2 will involve activities based on the Cundletown Museum, including a walk around the village to all the historic sites (glad it’s not this term, in the heat!). In Term 3 Eric Richardson will share his knowledge of The Upper Manning’s history with us.

Everyone Has a Story Brian Groth may well have tapped you on the shoulder in recent months as he has been on the trail of members who, he believes, “have a story to tell”. Most of us are unaware of the interesting “other life” of fellow members and it may come as a surprise to hear just how varied our backgrounds have been - not all war heroes or film stars but following careers in all sorts of interesting places.

And, there’s more in the pipeline! Hey, what about YOU doing an Armchair Travel segment - enough of you have been all over the place in recent months to fill a year of time slots? OR What about a course on something you’re passionate about or rather good at or just want to learn more about (the best way to learn is to teach) – See NSW U3A Network Resource Library for ideas & help. Go on!!

The Visual Arts Group Show They’re going public and commercial!! Bowers Café has agreed to host an exhibition of works by our VA group from late January (check dates) with all works being for sale! Well done!

Class Reunion We’ve all been to zillions of school/uni/work reunions over the years and have been impressed atwhat others have done (or been bored silly by their grandstanding!). In the Term 1 break Errol would like to organise a “class reunion” for members of The Entertainers, “Lucy’s Loonies”, thatcreative bunch who had such fun creating mayhem & merriment for the rest of us to laugh ourselves silly - remember the U3A Olympics? The can-can girls? Ludwik’s magic? Ella’s dancing? If you’re interested, ring Errol on 6550 0616

Gardeners’ Barbecue, 2012 by Helen Heathwood

On a lovely mild November day, twenty-one of our gardeners met at Wingham Brush for an end-of-year get-together and BBQ, arranged by Ann Summerhill. There were tasty rissoles, sausages, hash browns and onions which were ably cooked by John McDonald and Errol Heathwood. Everyone brought salads, nibbles or sweets and a raffle item. A few energetic ones, led by Liz Cross, went for a walk through the Brush. We all had a most enjoyable time and went home full of yummy food and with a great raffle prize. Thank you Ann.

The Last Cruise?? November 19 saw what will probably be the last cruise group - 7 (yes, seven of the 12 booked) happy souls (photo 3) with a coach and “Free Spirit” all to themselves. They had a magnificent time but obviously we can not repeat the experience, very costly for us and, of course, for the cruise operators who would have been in their rights to cancel on us. Cruising on the high seas has never been more popular but little local waterways apparently not so much any more. So from a fully booked cruise per term to none is quite a turn around but I’ve got the message!

Item 9 The History of English Spelling – What went wrong? Time: Thurs 10 am – 12 noon Dates: 7, 14, 21, 28 Feb; 7, 14, 21, 28 MarchVenue: Uniting Church, Taree Contact: Ern Hollebone 6553 9383

This term Ern will offer another course within the theme of The History of the English Language. This time the concentration will be on Spelling. English spelling got off to a bad start when the first alphabet (imported from Rome) did not have enough letters to cope with the sounds of English (imported from Germany). Things then went from bad to worse and, despite the efforts of “reformers”, after 1500 years we are faced with what many call a chaotic mess. The course aims to trace this movement and look for reason in the chaos. At the end of the course, you won’t be any better at spelling but, at least, you’ll know why you can’t spell!! Note: Cost $15 includes folder of notes. No session on Thursday 4th April.

Item 33 Day Trip 3 Terry’s Tours - Cattai Wetlands Date: Wednesday 20 / 27 March Contact: Pam Hollebone 6553 9383 Pick-up: Wingham Log: 8.30 am; Taree Info 8.45 am Return: approx 3.30 pm We visit the Cattai Wetlands to the east of Coopernook. These are part of a major wetland rehabilitation project being undertaken by Greater Taree City Council in conjunction with the NSW and Commonwealth Governments. It is proposed to eventually restore much of the Great Swamp by filling the many drainage channels that now discharge into the Manning River via Cattai Creek and in doing so, alleviate the massive discharge of acid sulphate charged waters which are having a significant impact on oyster and fish stocks in the river. Prior to drainage for agriculture in the early part of last century, the Great Swamp and its associated heaths were one of the largest and richest wetland systems on the North Coast. Three walking tracks have been established including a 2km stroll around the wetlands, a ramble through coastal blackbutt forest and a short hike to the look out on Spring Hill, where you can see the Three Brother Mountains to the north and as far south as Cape Hawke. Make sure you wear comfortable, flat walking shoes, long sleeves and a hat. Bring gallons of water, aerogard, sun glasses and sun screen. Also BYO refreshments (no shops there!) NOTE: Please answer Q5 on Page 1 of your Enrolment Form Cost: $15 covers bus – all else at your expense.

Item 31 Day Trip 1: Terry’s Tours - Trial Bay Gaol Historic Ruins Date: Wednesday 27 February / 6 March Contact: Pam Hollebone 6553 9383Pick-up: Wingham Log: 7.30 am; Taree Info 7.45 am Return: approx 5 pm Trial Bay Gaol, in Arakoon State Conservation Area east of Kempsey, is a historic ruin that dates back to 18 77 when it was constructed as a model reform prison where inmates could be trained in quarrying and stonemasonry and could be paid wages for their work. This lofty objective failed when the rock break wall, intended to form a safe harbour for shipping, was continually and irreparably damaged by rough seas. The gaol, abandoned in 1903, was re-opened over the period 1915-1917 as a concentration camp to house German detainees. After the war the gaol was again abandoned and became a ruin. When the area became part of Arakoon State Conservation Area, the NSW NPWS undertook significant rehabilitation works & re-opened the gaol to the public as a managed historic ruin. Make sure you wear comfortable, flat walking shoes, long sleeves and a hat. Bring gallons of water, aerogard, sun glasses and sun screen. Also BYO refreshments NOTE: Answer Q4 on Page 1 of your Form Cost: $25 covers bus and entry + tour – all else at your expense.

The historic ruins of Innes House will be interpreted by Sue Phillips, a specialist Discovery Ranger from NPWS. This historic Georgian mansion was built by convict labour for early free settler Major Archibald Clunes Innes who became police magistrate at Port Macquarie in 1830 and was granted 2568 acres (1039 ha) and contracts to supply the convict population with food. This land he worked with convict labour, transforming the wilderness into the fabled Lake Innes, for many years the greatest pastoral property north of Sydney. On this establishment, again with convict labour, he built, over several stages, in a typically grand scale, his home, Lake Innes Cottage. Maximum number: 30 Make sure you wear comfortable, flat walking shoes, long sleeves and a hat. Bring gallons of water, aerogard, sun glasses and sun screen. Also BYO refreshments.
