In early August Natalie Manning went on an exciting adventure to the ‘West Australian Screen Awards' (following the Revelation Film Festival) to represent her story ‘What a Debacle, Freddy Farkle!’ produced in collabora- tion with her childhood friend, an- imator Jesse Emmerson. Although the short animation film written by her didn’t receive an award, it did receive two nominations. Accord- ing to Natalie, just being there was reward enough! “Honestly the most exciting thing about be- ing at the WASA's was physically being there! I am stoked that we were nominated for two awards as we were the only animation to receive two, plus there were 880 film submissions all up, so even getting nominated is an achieve- ment in itself. It was co-hosted by Jack Thompson. The award in our category for best animation/short went to Derek Winchester for Jen- efer Loved Swimming. The award for best music/short went to Sam Cutri The Argentinian Escape. A few that stood out were Red Dog that won best feature film and Keir Wilkins who won Young Film Maker of the Year and Outstand- ing Achievement in script/long. The Screen Awards night was a creative mixture of screen artists. It was great to see the different styles and genres of film-making in the previews presented. But it wasn't just about film - there were also music videos and games too.” Film awards’ protocols What an exciting adventure for a young person, or, for that mat- ter, anyone, to experience. I was curious to know how the proto- cols worked. Natalie explained the process: “The Revelation Film Festival had screenings of different categories on certain nights back in July but on the Screen Awards night they played a snippet of the winner in each category, similar to the Oscars. There were around 30 categories for awards. I have learnt a lot about the process of animation, I have never strayed from writing. I have been true to myself and in doing so I have learnt that doing what you love plays a key role in your life's happiness and gives you balance. We all need a creative outlet.” Feet back on the ground With all of that excitement – the glitz, the glamour, the network- ing, I asked Natalie how she ‘keeps her feet on the ground’ around her family and two little boys. “When I returned home I was presented with the most pre- cious award made by my boys. It was in the shape of a TV with stars stuck all over it. I have it on display in my room where I write and it reads: ‘1 st Prize for What a Debacle Freddy Farkle! Best animation and Best Script Writer.’ They constantly tell me how proud they are (of me) they are considerate and lovely natured boys.” Since her return, Natalie has been interviewed on ABC Breakfast Radio and has other radio interviews planned, and has featured in some newspaper articles. “Premier Lara Giddings has shown a strong interest and so I have personally reported back to her in regards to my trip. Over the past month life seems to have been accelerated, excit- ing and very busy. One minute you've got your routine down pat and the next minute there are deadlines, meetings, and correspondence. My ‘feet’ seem to be up and down a lot lately, especially when every day seems to bring even more excitement” said Natalie Manning. And the future “Jesse Emmerson (director/ animator) and I have decided to create the eBook and I will be meeting with Screen Tasmania's Andrew McPhail to discuss this in the next fortnight. I would still like to have What a Debacle Freddy Farkle! as a storybook and can't wait to see Time to Sparkle Freddy Farkle! (no. 2) and Freddy Farkle no.3 come to life. What I would like to do next is to develop Freddy into a three-quel of either animation shorts, eBooks or picture books. However, it's not all about Freddy Farkle. I have around eighteen other stories and one in particular I am very keen on developing called "Lucas the Mane-less Lion." Good luck Natalie. We can’t wait to see them all.
