Year 6 Canberra Excursion
Year 6 Manly West students have recently undertaken an education tour of the national capital, Canberra. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government contributes $20 per student
under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.

Kitchen Garden
In the Kitchen Garden this week…
Year 4 in the Garden
This week and next, Year 4 classes are learning about the properties of packaging, with a particular emphasis on recyclable and reusable packaging. They'll be designing a package to take home their terrariums later this term. Over the coming weeks, each student is going to make their own beeswax wrap to take home and use. Beeswax wraps are extremely versatile and replace the need for cling wrap and other single-use plastic. Any donations of colourful cotton fabric would be greatly appreciated. Please drop it in to the office.
War on Waste If you haven't caught the latest episode of War on Waste, watch it as a family on ABC iView.
Year 2 in the Garden
Spring is almost here and Year 2 will be coming for some lessons in the garden soon!
B & B Hotels 5F are busy collecting suitable items to make our B & B Hotels in the next week. We will be building the ‘beds'
and the kitchen garden will be their 'breakfast'.
The Garden Library
5M have done a wonderful job creating the Garden Library area under the tree next to the chook run. It is now open at lunchtimes, come and have a look! The books are for reading in that area, and the motto is "Read a book, Return the book". We'd love donations of garden-related books, fiction or non-fiction. If you think you have a suitable book to donate, please cover it with contact and drop it in to me at the garden shed on Wednesdays or
Thursdays.
Watering and Compost turning
Are you bringing your kitchen scraps from home to add to the school compost bins? Please sign up to help turn the compost bins, we ask that you sign up
at least once per term. Go to SignUpGenius and search under my email address [email protected] for "Kitchen Garden Helpers". Please do not add any cooked food or plastic bags to our bins.
Small-scale Edible Gardening Course This is a beginner's course and covers the basics of composting & worm farming. It's on Sept 9th at Manly West Kitchen Garden. Bookings are
essential! http://www.permaculturenorthernbeaches.org.au/events/

Project Penguin
Recently Year Four participated in the 2nd Australian Antarctic Festival in Hobart. The students in 4W, 4M, 4J,
4G and 3/4B designed and painted a set of 50 wooden penguins, which then 'migrated' to Tasmania.
Our penguins were displayed along with 8000 other penguins from schools across Australia.

Library News THANK YOU SO MUCH to all the families who kindly donated to our library this morning! It was so wonderful to see the Manly West spirit and love of reading. The students will enjoy reading the books that have generously been donated. Thank you to Mrs. Burke, Mrs Robertson and Mrs Daddo for all the help this busy, but
fun morning on Education Day. Many donated books have already been borrowed today, and the rest will be loaned out to the children at their library lesson time.
Just 9 days to go! All Manly West readers have only until Friday, August 31st, 2018 to enter their books onto their Reading Record online at https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prcstudentExperience.html#/ . This is especially important for those in Year 3 to achieve 4 years in a
row for their GOLD certificate and for Year 6 to achieve 7 years in a
row for their PLATINUM certificate. You’ve already done the reading in class and for homework, so now all you need to do is get your Reading Record into Mrs. Burke or I in the library for all your prizes & reading fame! Happy reading! Mrs Ellen Swick
