PROJECT PILLOWCASE ALEK’S ADVENTURE

Alek’s Adventure was a webpage started to keep everyone updated Alek’s condition, who was born with multiple heart defects. Babies and children with severe Congenital Heart Defects usually spend a lot of time in the hospital, and much of that time in their bed. Alek was born Dec. 19, 2012 and spent 6 weeks in bed before he was able to be held and out of his bed. These babies and children need lots of comfort and something of their own. Project Pillowcase is a new project here but is happening in other states. We are asking people to donate 1 yard of fabric (Cotton or Flannel) and must be 40-44in wide. These will be used to make pillowcases that the child can keep as a keepsake, or parents will have as a memory. If you sew and would like to make a pillowcase and donate an already finished one that is welcome as well. The babies sleep in a little bed called a bed warmer. The size of the mattress for those are 61cm by 76cm (24.02” x 29.92”). Alek made huge progress we were lucky to take him home, know-ing that his heart condition could be fatal at any point in his life. Alek passed away on April 1, 2013. This is why we are starting Project Pillowcase, to give back to the wonderful CICU at Children’s Hospital Milwaukee, WI. In hopes Alek’s memory will live on forever, and bring comfort to all the heart children and their fami-lies during their stay at the hospital. Any cotton or flannel fabric donation is welcome, please don’t throw it away. Donate to Alek’s Adventure! To make a fabric donation or pillowcase, please call Katie at 920.242.9279 or Barb at 920.553.4929 (we are happy to pick up donations). Sincerely, Alek’s Adventure.

Donations may also be dropped off at the Manitowoc Senior Center Monday-Friday 8a-4p.

Page 14: Manitowoc Senior Center News Notes

14 In a perfect world, every-thing would always go right. There would be no disappointment or trials, and life would be filled with only sweet, warm, and fuzzy feelings.

But how would we know if things were good if we had no comparison?

Would we recognize the blessings in our lives without having the opposite to

compare them to? Without the darkness, would we appreciate the lights?

Seems to me if we want rainbows, we’ve got to have rain. The trick is to pull ourselves up by our bootstraps and go out and look for puddles to play in; recognize the tempest for what it is and train ourselves to look for the good in every situation. By overcoming our adversity, we find the joy in everything.

So go on, go play in the rain!

ONE BOY, ONE BOAT, ONE TIGER…

After the tragic sinking of a cargo ship, a solitary lifeboat remains bobbing on the wild, blue Pacific. The only survivors from the wreck are a sixteen year-old boy

named Pi, a hyena, a zebra (with a broken leg), a female orang-utan and a 450-pound Royal Bengal tiger. The scene is set for one of the most extraordinary and best-loved

works of fiction in recent years.

during the movie.

JUNE’S HEREJUNE’S HEREJUNE’S HEREJUNE’S HERE

June is busting out all over, At long last summer’s here;

The snow refused to melt away, So flowers could appear!

It’s great to see the green, green grass, Oh, what a wondrous sight;

Although rain is in the forecast, At least it isn’t white!

We turn our thoughts to brides and love, And luscious wedding cake;

To backyard parties, grilling out And swimming in the lake!

It’s wonderful to look outside and not see piles of snow;

We won’t complain when cutting grass, We’ll even watch it grow!

Juen is busting out all over, Relax—enjoy the sun;

You never know, snow may return And spoil all your fun!

Happy June!

The safest place to be at the center would be in an interior room away from windows. 21 The Nutrition Exchange with Kayla Halverson, UWGB Dietetic Intern

Dear Kayla,

I keep hearing that I should be eating whole grain bread because it is healthy. However, I never really knew why it was so healthy for me. Also, how do I decipher which whole grain bread to buy? Is there a difference between whole grains and whole wheat? There are so many options to choose from in the grocery store bread isle. Sincerely,

Mrs. Grain Dear Mrs. Grain, First of all, choosing to consume whole grains in replace of refined grains is a great idea! Actually, the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends eating at least half of your grains as “whole grains.” Let’s start with explaining the difference between whole grains and refined grains. Whole grains contain the entire grain seed--bran, germ, and endosperm. Refined grains have been processed, removing the bran and the germ, and leaving only the endosperm. The endosperm contains mainly starchy carbohy-drates, compared to the germ and bran, which are very rich in fiber, antioxidants, B vitamins, and minerals. So you can see how whole grains are more beneficial than refined grains. In addition, studies have shown that eating whole grains in place of refined grains lowers the risk of many chronic diseases such as coronary heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Replacing refined grains with whole grains can also help with body weight management and gastroin-testinal health. There is no “healthiest” whole grain. Trying to incorporate a variety of whole grains your diet is a good idea. Whole grains include:

All names will be kept confidential.

Whole Barley Buckwheat Whole Cornmeal and Popcorn Millet Rolled Oats and Oatmeal Quinoa Brown or Wild Rice Whole Rye Whole Wheat As you can see above, whole wheat is a type of whole grain. Therefore, you do not need to buy strictly whole wheat bread. If you prefer, you can purchase whole grain bread that has a variety of whole grains in its ingre-dients. So how do you decipher which whole grain bread product to pur-chase? Well, manufacturers can be tricky when labeling their products. Also, most grain foods are made with a combination of ingredients. This makes it difficult and confusing for consumer to determine if a product truly is “whole grain.” The Whole Grains Council has created an offi-cial packaging symbol called the Whole Grain Stamp to help consumers identify real whole grain products. Look for this 100% Whole Grain Stamp on products to identify if it is actually whole grain. What if the product does not have the Whole Grain Stamp? Not all manufacturers choose to put the Whole Grain Stamp on their products. If the product does not have a stamp, follow these simple steps:

First, check the package label for a “100% Whole Wheat” or “100% Whole Grain” claim. If they have these claims, the product is likely to be mostly whole grain.

Last, check the list of ingredients. If the first ingre-dient listed contains the word “whole” (such as “whole wheat flour” or “whole oats”), it is likely that the product is a whole grain.

The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recom-mends eating 5-6 servings of grains daily and making half of them whole grains. Try to incorporate a vari-ety of whole grains into your diet, not just whole wheat bread in place of white bread. Swap out white rice for brown rice or try cornmeal muffins instead of refined all-purpose flour muffins. Even swapping out chips for air-popped popcorn incorporates whole grains into your diet!

We voted to hold our picnic at Silver Creek Park. There is some question as to when to have the picnic. In 2011 it was in July, in 2012 it was in August. At the June tea let’s take a show of hands to see which month we would prefer and then keep it permanent. It was voted on a while back not to make a donation to “Domestic Violence”. But, Berdeva received another letter asking for money. So we took a show of hands again and voted not to give again. Then someone suggested sending the envelope around so a few did donate. The Red Hat Singers practice on various Wednesdays and perform usually the 3rd Wednesday at 2:00pm. May 15th we were at Shady Lane. May 16th we were at North Ridge for the nursing home week talent show. May 22nd we were at Generations Adult Day Care. The public is always welcome to join us at our performances to see our show. Berdeva is hosting two trips. Saturday, September 7, 2013, Rock River Wine Fest and Craft Show. Saturday, June 8, 2013, three hour car ferry cruise, Manitowoc to Ludington, MI. Leave Manitowoc at 6:00pm to get to Ludington for 8:00pm curtain time for “Loveboat” show, all for $55.00. Call Berdeva at 920-682-6433 for details. Both trips are open to the public. Respectfully submitted, Joni Ericson
