G. Select New Course Development Race & Social Justice Seminar: I developed this course along with Branden Born to address

the topic of race and social justice in the context of urban planning. There was a lack of (and

Updated May 2017 22

a growing demand for) a course in our program that explicitly engages these important topics. We offer it as a lunch time seminar every quarter and read articles and books covering a range of themes within the topic areas.

BE Lab India: Indian cities are transforming at an unprecedented pace due to rapid

urbanization, globalization and changing urban policies. The BE Lab India focused on select cities with the potential to elucidate the patterns of urban transformation emerging from this interface. The class emphasized the evolution of Indian cities from independence in 1947 to the present time. Course themes included global markets, global architecture, informal settlements, urban poor, equity and democracy, cultural heritage and historic preservation. The class engaged these topics through literature and case studies.

Digital Design Practicum: I developed a new course focusing on digital technologies and their

applications for urban design and planning practice. The course was conceived as a practicum, a hands-on class where students have an opportunity to learn and apply digital tools to a local case study using design and planning theories learned in other classes. The software introduced in this class include ArcGIS, Adobe Creative Suite (PhotoShop & InDesign), and Google SketchUp. The course is fairly challenging as there is a steep learning curve, but from the feedback that I have received the course has helped many students immensely in their professional practice.

Integrated Rural Planning & Development in the Upper Himalayas: From my life in India, I

am familiar with the Upper Himalayan region of the states of Uttarakhand and Jammu & Kashmir, and the socio-economic changes they are undergoing. As a faculty member in the United States, I wanted to develop a research agenda for the rural and remote mountainous communities in these areas focusing primarily on issues of livelihood and historic preservation. I found a useful avenue in the Exploration Seminar of the International Programs and Exchanges office to develop a course that integrates my developing research and pedagogy based on experiential learning. As part of this seminar, I offer a preparation course in which students familiarize themselves with the region, field ethnography methodology, and ethics of international work. In the field they gather data to develop their research projects on any one theme they chose to explore in small groups. The results are published in a unified report that is shared with the community and stakeholders.

H. Redefining Existing Courses Urban Form: I inherited the Urban Form course from Anne Moudon after she retired. This is a

core course that prepares students to understand urban form particularly how it is shaped by land patterning, uses, buildings and open spaces. I have kept much of the original structure of the course, but updated the readings and revised the assignments and project.

Preservation and the Vernacular Environment. I inherited the Preservation and the

Vernacular Environment course from Gail Dubrow. This is a methods course that trains students to understand the bulk of the built environment not developed by professional designers and planners. I kept much of the original structure of the course, but expanded the content to include new methodological approaches and international literature and cases. I also use Seattle’s Pike-Pine Corridor as a case to help students understand the value of everyday places. Students are expected to locate their cases study and research projects in the neighborhood.

Updated May 2017 23

American Urban History. I inherited the course from Gail Dubrow and have kept the social history focus of the course intact, since I appreciate the value of social history in understanding urban experiences of all groups of city inhabitants. I have expanded the course content to include some new urban history scholarship, including the experiences of Native Americans in urban areas, but for the most part the course retains its original focus and structure. Students have generally found the course rewarding, as it sharpens their understanding of the process of urbanity and its complexity.

Introduction to Preservation Planning. I inherited the course from Gail Dubrow and have

revised its contents considerably to give it more of a planning focus as well as to include international content and more updated literature. I have also introduced a split lecture/seminar format, which I find conducive for a course that has elements of both theory and practice.

URBDP 503: Communication and Analysis. I offered this course once, but completely revised

Ron Kasprisin’s syllabus. The syllabus that I developed forms the basis for how the class is being currently offered.
