Mission Statement | The mission of Manhattan College is to provide a contemporary, per son centered educational experience characterized by high academic standards, reflection on faith, values and ethics, and life-long career preparation. This is achieved in two ways: by offering students pro grams which integrate a broad liberal education with concentration in specific disciplines in the arts and sciences or with professional preparation in business, education and engineering; and by nurturing a caring, pluralistic campus community.

The learning experience at Manhattan College is enriched by post-graduate professional programs and by capitalizing on its location on the edge of the cultural center and global marketplace that is New York City.

Student Demographics | This school targets first generation college, low income, disadvan taged, and minority populations for college admissions. This has impressively given the college a higher than average multi-cultural, and multi-ethnic demographic. This desire to provide college to these areas of the student populations that are often under represented in colleges at the same level are rooted in the colleges basic beliefs and fundamental religious doctrines.

Unique Selling Points | A smaller college set with a backdrop of New York city. Also, this school provides guaranteed housing for admissions for the full 4 years. A huge bonus considering it is located within one of the highest cost real estate in the nation. Also offers a high amount of financial aid for their desired student demographic.

College History | The school was founded in May 1853. The college, originally known as “Manhattanville” was owned by 5 Christian Brothers that moved their small Canal Street school to 131st street and Broadway. The school identifies itself as a Catholic College. It was established in 1853, the college is founded upon the Lasallian tradition in excellence in teaching, respect for individual dignity, and commitment to social justice inspired by the innovator of modern pedagogy, John Baptist de La Salle. It’s focused on first-generation college students, and was an early proponent of access to disadvantaged and minority students by establishing specialized scholarship funds as early as 1938. This still shows true in their college makeup as and impressive percentage of the student body come from ethnic minorities.

Website | The site is pretty basic. It has nice imagery and photos of the students and campus but the structure of the site itself is pretty boring. Not to mention the color scheme on the website does not coincide with the colors of the school. It also has a completely separate website for ath letics. The looks of the athletic departments are completely separate from that of the school. The areas, definitely need to work more cohe sively with one another.

Appropriate Image | Because it is a Catholic school with a over 157 years of history it’s essential to tie this history into the new look. Also developing a new cohesive color scheme that will be used throughout the educational and the athletic departments are essential. I think a classic typeface, with possible updated graphic and/or element(s).

As far as what IS working now, it just seems that they don’t really have an identity at all. Things are very generic. Maybe using the Tra jan Pro for the typeface would work and it would also bring in the typeface they are already using for their logo.

The Big Idea | Incorporating a visual element reflecting either the Catholic religion and/or the Lasallian vision (a star) that is associated with this school is much needed. Also, possibly keeping a more simplified view of the prominent chapel that is the center of the campus. Incorporating an updated green color palette that reflects this historical element and conservative feel is necessary as well.

2D Application | You could easily incorporate the new identity by readjusting colors, and adding the visual logo element to the website.

3D Application | Incorporating the new identity on the main campus by use of large customer banner(s), especially at the onset of a new year would be ideal for all new incoming students to see the change in branding.

Words from the Designer

When approaching a project such as this, with a college deeply rooted in not only history and having a strong religious element, I knew that the redesign would need to embrace both these very primal elements of Manhattan College.

A primary element in the original logo is the main chapel of the college, as well as the color of green. I wanted to incorporate both of these identifiable elements in order to continue with those powerful aspects of the current brand. It was determined that these two primary elements would be merged with the new identity.

The goal of this redesign is to bring Manhattan College into an updated, approachable, and power-ful brand mark and identity. I believe this was accomplished by incorporating a fresh lime green and lessening the harshness of the black by transforming the secondary color into a charcoal gray. In doing so we have also developed a streamlined primary graphic and secondary graphic mark that can be incorporated into all medium.

The primary graphic represents the chapel as well as ties the original logo into the new one.

The secondary graphic represents the school within the backdrop of Manhattan in New York City.

I believe I was successful in moving Manhattan College into a new era, where a religious and histori-cal school such as Manhattan College, can also have a respectable updated identity as well. I believe I have developed a branding campaign for Manhattan College that will suit them for many years in the future.
