INTRODUCTION

Mango industry is the second major fruit industry of Pakistan. At present, it is passing

through a transformation phase where a shift is being observed from traditional practices to

improved practices especially in export sector both at production and postharvest level. Various

interventions have occurred in the mango industry of Pakistan as a result of awareness, R&D and

technical support rendered to the industry by various national and international projects. Few

examples include:

- the concept of nursery sanitation

- shift towards cardboard box packaging

- start of farm direct exports instead of sourcing from farm and self-marketing (exports)

by many medium to large scale growers through local cooperative clusters/consortia

- access to super market segment besides of ethnic chapter

- sea-freight to Europe including UK

- establishment of on-farm and distant commercial fruit fly disinfestation facilities etc

- domestic marketing of desapped and cardboard packed mangoes by small grower

groups and few traders

- promotion of allied business e.g. packaging, logistics, certifications, services etc

The change in case of domestic chains is slow as compared to that in the export chains.

Overall, the mango industry of Pakistan is a diverse sector which includes a diversity of

stakeholders and provides several business opportunities; however, there is need of the time:

- to bring together the industry, research, academia, extension and government to

exchange the ideas and share the relevant experiences in the sector

- to create awareness in the country regarding the issues prevailing in mango sector

including domestic and export businesses with a special focus on value addition

through improved packaging and further processing.

- to understand the current scenario and future prospects of mango industry.

Mango is second major fruit crop of Pakistan with an area of 170.6 Thousand Hectares and annual

production of 1.72 Million Tons. Share of mango in national fruit industry is about 22.8% in terms

of area and 24.5% in case of fruit production. The provincial break up for mango industry’s area
