Principal’s Message (continues) emails, the school website, and teacher links to the school website.

We need your help to make sure all of our students are fully prepared for academic success. We all know that hungry children have a more difficult time doing their best work. That’s why we encourage all students to begin the school day with a nutritious breakfast. The School Breakfast Program is available to all students every weekday morning. You do not need to register your child in advance. Your child can eat breakfast at school every day or only occasionally. School breakfast makes good sense – it provides ¼ of your child’s nutritional needs, meets Dietary Guidelines recommendations, and offers children a chance to eat breakfast with their friends. School Breakfast is an ideal solution on busy mornings. If breakfast at home is not possible or convenient, please have your child(ren) take advantage of breakfast here at school. Let’s make sure that all of our students start the school day alert, well-fed and ready to learn.

Thank you to everyone who volunteered on our annual Clean Up Day, which was held on Saturday, October 17. “Mother Nature” allowed us enough sun to repaint the parking lot (stalls, curbs, etc.). As soon as we were done and the paint was dry to the touch, she let the thunder and rains loose!

The annual Mass Evacuation Drill is scheduled for Wednesday, November 25. We will be walking to the Trinity United Church (1716 Komo Mai Drive) and then returning. Manana Elementary has TWO evacuation sites: Trinity United Methodist Church and Manana Community Park (Waimano Home Road). Why do we have 2 sites in opposite directions from the school? The reason is that if we ever need to evacuate the school, we do not want to be “down wind” from any chemicals or debris in the air.

Principal’s Message (continues) Speaking of safety, I must continue to post this reminder because it continues to be a concern. There is NO supervision of students before 7:45 am, or after school ends. A number of students are being dropped off or are walking on to the campus VERY early. Some students are waiting outside of the office over an hour after school ends. The health and safety of our students is of the utmost importance! Please make the necessary arrangements to have your child(ren) dropped off/picked up safely.

Finally, we ALL have a lot to be thankful for, so please help your child(ren) know and understand that. The holiday season will soon be upon us, and that can sometimes lead to additional stress on families, especially on the children.

Aloha,

Please be sure to write your child's name, with permanent pen, on jackets, sweaters, lunch containers, etc. This past summer we donated over 20 items to charity. We would love to return these items to their owner. Thanks!!

JUST A FRIENDLY REMINDER: Lunch loans are on the rise and we really need your help. Please ensure that your child has enough money in their account to cover not only their lunch, but also an additional entree, extra milk and breakfast if they purchase those items.

Thank you for your help and cooperation!

GEOGRAPHIC EXCEPTION FOR SY 2015-2016

The application period for Geographic Exceptions for school year 2015-2016 is from January 4 to March 1, 2016. Applications received after the deadline will be placed on a waiting list.

If you do not currently reside (permanent address) within the Manana School District, you need to have, on record, a Geographical Exception (GE).

Should circumstances change during your childʼs time here (i.e. change in residence), we ask that you let our school office know as soon as possible.

If a GE form is needed, the form can be obtained from your school. Families who fraudulently misrepresent address information will be asked to enroll at their home school. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

The Manana Elementary School PTO Zippy’s Fundraiser will be starting IN DECEMBER. Be on the lookout for the fundraiser envelope.

From the Library - Mahalo to our Manana Ohana for making our Book Fair a huge success! With the revenue raised, the library will be able to get almost $2,000 worth of resources for our school! Special thanks go out to the following people -Mr. Adam, Mr. John, and Mr. Colin for assisting with the set up and break down of the book fair, and Mrs. Katano for her assistance with the volunteers. Also a special Mahalo to the volunteers for their help - we wouldn't have been as successful without your help!

Mrs. Hamadon Librarian

Some words Mrs. Nagamine lives by is “Choose to be grateful everyday and that a positive attitude can take you far.” She is proud of working at Manana because it’s been here for a long time and is known to be a great school. Some things she enjoys to do is sewing and cooking. She loves to eat, travel and spend time with her family. Did you know that Mrs. Nagamine used to speak Japanese fluently?

M R S. N A G A M I N E

Mrs. Nagamine wanted to be a teacher because she likes working with children and wanted to be a teacher from age eight. She likes Manana Elementary because everyone is kind and the students are hard working. She lives in Pearl City and likes to work in her community.

Hello, Manana Ohana, Demi Clark, your Student Council Treasurer, speaking. Here to tell you some information on Mrs. Cynthia Nagamine.

Some words of advice are to try your best, work hard and be honest. She is proud of working at Manana because students try their best and it’s a great school to work at. Some things she loves to do is shop, ski and travel. The most current event in her life is that her baby boy recently turned one.

MRS. TESHIMA

Another great teacher is Mrs. Stacey Teshima. Mrs. Teshima became a teacher because she loves working with children and wants them to do well. She likes working at Manana because the staff and students are kind and everyone takes care of each other.

She lives by the words, “Always keep trying and try your very best.” Mrs. Velligas’ favorite food is ice cream and her favorite flavor is ice cream. She is known to have a sense of humor. She has three children, Dylan, Christian and Shannon. Without her here, the JPO students would be crazy! All the JPOs love Mrs. Velligas.

MRS. VELLIGAS

Who is the best JPO Advisor? Mrs. Ronalyn Velligas. Aloha, Manana! I’m Alyssa Nakagawa, Student Council Secretary. Mrs. Velligas is one of the most wonderful and helpful staff here at Manana. She helps out the Kindergarteners and is the JPO Advisor. Mrs. Velligas loves working with children and it’s fun. She is proud to say that students are respectful and kind.

Mrs. Bella Kahunahana is another amazing Educational Assistant here at Manana. She helps teach preschool in Building D. She enjoys working with children and see them move on to a higher level of learning.

MRS. KAHUNAHANA “I remember helping students who have a difficult time and seeing a big smile on their faces because a light bulb had just turned on to where they could now understand the problem and feel confident while working on their own.” She said Manana has always been a school where she can feel safe and respected by everyone. There is an awesome staff and employees who are very caring and friendly. Manana is the best!
