The PhD Programme in Management of the University of Bologna is a 4-year full-time programme offered in English. The PhD Programme aims to train research candidates who aim to become leading scholars in management disciplines at top rated universities.

The PhD Programme offers specializations in two

tracks:

• General Management • Banking and Finance

The PhD Programme offers candidates a broad and

inter-disciplinary education in the fields of business,

management and finance research. It provides them

with strong theoretical foundations in social science

disciplines and a thorough knowledge of research

methods applied to management and financial problems.

The requirements that Doctoral candidates are

expected to meet include: a) to attend core and

elective courses and pass the related exams; b)

to attend Department lunch seminars; c) to develop

a literature review paper by the end of the first year;

and d) to work out a detailed prospectus of their

research thesis (proposal) by the end of the second

year and get it approved. Moreover, it is expected

that Doctoral candidates will present their research

outcomes at research seminars and international

conferences. After the approval of the proposal,

PhD candidates are encouraged to spend a period as

visiting scholars in a foreign university, to be agreed

on with their main thesis advisor and the coordinator.

From the very beginning, each Doctoral candidate will

be assigned an academic mentor (a Faculty member)

whose role is to provide research guidance.

A tutor will also be available to all Doctoral candidates

to provide more general assistance and support on

organizational issues.

Over the last six years the PhD programme has already

attracted students from various countries in the

world. Most of our Doctoral graduates have gained

post-doc and tenured positions in top universities

worldwide (see the box below for a partial list) and have

received best paper awards at several conferences,

including Academy of Management, DRUID, Strategic

Management Society, QUIS Symposium, EMAC Doctoral

Dissertation, Fisher IMS and AMA SERVING Doctoral

Consortium, etc. Their research outcomes have been

published in top international Journals including:

Administrative Science Quarterly, Journal of Business

Venturing, Journal of Marketing, Journal of Consumer

Research, Journal of Banking and Finance, Management

Science, Organization Science, Psychological Science,

Research Policy and many others.

The PhD benefits from close relations with the

University of Bologna Business School (BBS),

that offers Doctoral candidates the opportunity to: be

part of an international community of post graduate

and executive masters students; get in contact

with research and innovation oriented firms; and

attend seminars held by international managers and

entrepreneurs.

The PhD Programme in Management prepares

candidates for research and teaching careers

at leading academic institutions, as well as at

private and public research institutions.

The PhD Programme offers placement services:

specific seminars are devoted to preparing candidates

for the job market, in order to open up academic

career opportunities for them.
