HIM Industry
Challenges and Opportunities
• Industry change (ICD-10) creates tremendous opportunity and increased competition.
• The work of our profession (our members) is rapidly changing, with ever-moving goals and targets established by the Department of Health and Human Services.
• Our ability to rapidly develop and maintain products and services was diminished by legacy technology decisions
AHIMA VLab
Good, Bad, and Ugly The Good
• First to Market • Innovative, hands-on experience with leading HIM applications • Applied skills-based utility for HIM students • Used by leading academic institutions • Multiple utilities
The Bad • Was not scalable beyond the existing customer base • Emerging competitors brought better design
– Competitor design can’t compete with VLab utilities offerings
The Ugly • The overall experience was cumbersome; required up to 5 different logins • The learning materials were scattered, residing in up to three different
repositories, all requiring more logins. • Difficult to maintain and provide quality assurance • Limited customer support • No room for growth in a growing industry
AHIMA-Pearson
AHIMA Academy Our partnership has allowed us to:
• Create a better user experience overall • SSO • Easy to use user interface and access to all applications in one
place • Centralized file management

• Regain and maintain market share • Support AHIMA as the “gold-standard” for HIM content • Leverage the technology expertise of partners to support our training
mission
Road Ahead
The Future is Now •Identify new product development opportunities
• Evaluated by build, buy, or partner criteria •Currently developing VLab Pro for the professional market •Faculty advisory workgroup developing Interprofessional products (HIM, Nursing, Medicine, Allied Health – Integrated activities the simulate the real lifecycle of patient data)
• Integrate hands-on, real-world experience offered by VLab into our foundational Coding Basics curriculum for new HIM professionals
•Pearson partnership facilitates selling a superior curriculum-in-a-box solution
• Expanding online education and VLab offerings to additional, targeted markets, outside of HIM and beyond North America
• Perform efficacy study for VLab product
