Management Development at Ciba Geigy:
What is Management Development?Any attempt to improve current or future management performance by imparting
knowledge, changing attitude or increasing skills.
At the early stage of the management development at Ciba Geigy A separate staff unit
was created called ‘executive development ’ a whose role was to assure a supply of
qualified managers for the line management position. .
At the early stage of the management development program the system we developed
Worked mainly with the executive group within each company where the immediate
preoccupation with succession was highest. After that Ciba-Geigy expanded the process
to reach young generation of high potential in the organization and to increase the supply
of them over time.
Management Development Structure
1.Management development staff unit consist of 14 people.
Seven of them works in management education, running and organizing in-house and
external training course.
Others 7 are dealing with succession planning, recruitment, job rotation and MD plans.
2.Central management development program emphasized on 2100 employees.
This program is provided for three types of management position.
1. Senior Executive of Top Management
2. The potential executives at lower and middle management position.
3. Line Management
Objective’s of Ciba-Geigy’s Management Development:
1.Planning executive succession for the whole group on the basis of corporate ,divisional
and group company MD planning reports,
2.Identifying potential executives and plan their next development steps;
3.Monitoring the quality and age structure of each unit’s executive and potential
executive population.
4.Setting up career moves and job rotation for both executive and potential executive
totaling about 300 per year.
5.Coordination of moves of obsolete executive into new positions to give them new
incentives and added motivation
6.Educational development of all executives and the potential executives through the
internal in house and external (business school) management Course.
The role of Management development:
1.Conceptual i.e Policy and system development
2.Pedagogical i.e Assignment and coordination of management training activities.
3.Advisory.
So the three basic things of Ciba-Geigy’s Management development program are
a.MD plan
b.Training Program of MD
andc.MD’s role in executive appointments.
