The case of Dr. P. is one that reminds us of the mystery and fragility of human experience. Everything that is most dear to us - our personalities, values, relationships, emotional life, sensory perception - is dependent upon a delicately tuned web of synapses and neurons in our brains that can be instantly altered by any number of traumas or diseases. When the brain loses its ability to put an object or experience into context, many questions are raised about what exactly it means to be human.

In bringing this story to life, we (like Dr. S., whose character is based on the renowned neurologist Oliver Sacks) wanted to understand what it's like to see the world through Dr. P's eyes, or rather, through his brain. We began the process by consulting with a team of neurologists who enthusiastically shared their time and expertise with us, offering guidance at every stage of the production process, from the way the sets are designed, to the way Dr. P. negotiates his way through a room. This was a perfect match for GLMMR's wholistic creative approach - allowing the most central ideas of the piece to find their voice through every element of the production.

Another aspect we wanted to explore is the wife's role as a caregiver. She is perhaps the most relatable character in the opera, and serves as a conduit for the emotional distress resulting from Dr. P's disorder. Within the scope of this story, she experiences a journey from denial to realization, acceptance, and ultimately gratitude for every single moment that is left with Dr. P.

Brian Joyce Dr. S., the neurologist

American tenor Brian Joyce, recognized for his distinctive characterizations, has performed with opera companies in Europe and the United States. After the Austin Lyric Opera production of Michael Nyman’s chamber opera, The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, the Austin Chronicle complimented the “subtle gestures and expressions that revealed the depths of (the character’s) feelings”. The Metro Pulse’s review of Knoxville Opera’s La Fanciulla del West proclaimed him “a real standout here, both vocally and dramatically, in the role of Nick the bartender.” Recently, he has appeared in a wide variety of roles. Performances have included

Pagliacci and Madama Butterfly with New Rochelle Opera, Les Contes d’Hoffmann with Regina Opera, Don Quichotte with Empire Opera, and Die Fledermaus with Knoxville Opera. A frequent performer with Austin Lyric Opera, he has sung roles in La Traviata, Rigoletto, Turandot, L’Étoile, Die Fledermaus, and the American premiere of Philip Glass’ Waiting for the Barbarians.

Tony Dillon Dr. P., a singer/music professor

The vocal and dramatic versatility of American bass Tony Dillon has been commended throughout the United States, Russia and Central America. His repertoire of over seventy operatic roles ranges from the works of Peri and Cavalli to premiering the operas and song cycles of Earnest, Mlyn, Fink and others. He has had the pleasure of performing under the baton of Yves Abel, Scott Bergeson, Leonard Bernstein, Anton Coppola, Sir Colin Davis, and Kent Nagano. A former recipient of the Opera Renaissance Award, Mr. Dillon is recorded on Delos International with "The Voices of Ascension," National Public Radio's Of Mice and Men from Glimmerglass Opera, Summer and Smoke from

Emily Pulley Mrs. P., his wife

Famed soprano Emily Pulley’s radiant voice and electrifying acting have won her international acclaim on operatic stages. As Minnie in La fanciulla del West with Glimmerglass Opera, “she shone as Minnie, the pistol-packing, soft-hearted heroine of La fanciulla del West, capturing the crowd with burnished sound and straightforward, unaffected acting.” New York Magazine proclaimed, “Emily Pulley explores most every facet of this volatile character with a useful soprano that can deliver a power punch as well as a caressing phrase, and she gives a compelling performance.” As the Governess in The Turn of the Screw with Boston Lyric Opera, Opera News exclaimed, “Emily Pulley was outstanding as the embattled Governess. The role fits Pulley’s voice like a glove, and she

captured the psychological complexity and heartbroken innocence of one of Britten’s great tragic characters.”

Michael NymanAs one of Britain's most innovative and celebrated composers, Michael Nyman's work encompasses operas and string quartets, film soundtracks and orchestral concertos. Far more than merely a composer, he's also a performer, conductor, bandleader, pianist, author, musicologist and now a photographer and film-maker.

Nyman first made his mark on the musical world in the late 1960s, when he invented the term 'minimalism' and, still in his mid-twenties, earned one of his earliest commissions, to write the libretto for Birtwistle's 1969 opera Down By The Greenwood Side. In 1976 he formed his own

ensemble, the Campiello Band (now the Michael Nyman Band) and over three decades and more, the group has been the laboratory for much of his inventive and experimental compositional work.

His most notable scores number a dozen Peter Greenaway films, including such classics as The Draughtsman's

Contract and The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover; Neil Jordan's The End Of The Affair; several Michael Winterbottom features including Wonderland and A Cock And Bull Story; the Hollywood blockbuster Gattaca - and, of course, his unforgettable music for Jane Campion's 1993 film, The Piano, the soundtrack album of which has sold more than three million copies. He also co-wrote the score for the 1999 film Ravenous with his friend and sometime protégé, Damon Albarn. Most recently his music was used in the 2009 BAFTA award winning and Oscar nominated film, Man on Wire.

Dr. Oliver SacksOliver Sacks, M.D. is a physician, a best-selling author, and a professor of neurology at the NYU School of Medicine. The New York Times has referred to him as “the poet laureate of medicine.”

He is best known for his collections of neurological case histories, including The Man who Mistook his Wife for a Hat, Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain and An Anthropologist on Mars. Awakenings, his book about a group of patients who had survived the great encephalitis lethargica epidemic ofthe early twentieth century, inspired the 1990 Academy Award-nominated feature film starring Robert De Niro and Robin Williams.

Dr. Sacks is a frequent contributor to the New Yorker and the New York Review of Books.

Welcome to Indianapolis Opera! With this new production and a new theater, the Schrott Center for the Arts, we are excited to be back on stage presenting Michael Nyman’s The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat.

This production marks a new chapter for both Indianapolis Opera and the community. We are a brand new company in terms of leadership and artistic direction. It is with a new mission that we seek to educate, inspire and entertain through the creation and presentation of musical storytelling for the Indiana community. Not just an opera company or an organization that produces educational programming for the local schools, we will strive to deliver more.

Driving our artistic vision are the core beliefs that the human voice is capable of the greatest range of expression. We believe the stage is a community forum for engagement and communication, and that it is only through the telling of stories that we truly define our humanity. With these beliefs as our foundation we invite you to take a journey with us that will engage, inspire, transform and entertain you.

The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat asks us to consider the question of who is normal in our society and by what definition? Is someone who experiences the world in a different way an outcast? What happens to the people around an individual who is labeled as different? The neurologist Oliver Sacks spent his entire career exploring a greater narrative and not just the medical deficit of a given individual. Indeed, it is our ability to strive to overcome any perceived deficit that makes us human. This story blended with the beautiful score of composer Michael Nyman presents a compelling theatrical experience.

Enriching the lives of children and adults, Indianapolis Opera curates meaningful education outreach and community engagement programming that engages and cultivates new and diverse audiences, builds sustainable partnerships, and develops young performing artists.

As the art form continues to evolve, the core elements of telling great stories in new, engaging ways remain as central and relevant as it did hundreds of years ago. We are pleased to bring this great art form to the stage and to continue delivering operatic experiences in new places and in creative ways to diverse audiences.

Since 1989 Indianapolis Opera has developed relationships with teachers and school systems throughout the state, and annually sends artists from our Resident Artist Company to work with students in their communities. Annually, we reach 30,000 children and adults statewide.
