The Center’s 13th Annual Luncheon featuring John C. McGinley, and chairs Angie Hollaway and Amy Miller, created a record breaking luncheon raising over

$245,000 for The Center Foundation. Stef Levy and Kristin Gauntt were the underwriting chairmen and combined with speaker John C. McGinley, as well as a host of guests, filled River Oaks Country Club on February 18.

The luncheon was well attended with over 300 guests representing various agencies, corporations, and organizations throughout the Greater Houston area. With his personal journey, keynote speaker John C. McGinley shared the intricacies of being a blended special needs family and what that looks like, the good and the great! John has been promoted and touted as a National Down Syndrome Society and Special Olympics ambassador. He recently released a statement on Huffington Post to increase awareness and commemorate the national day of the “End of the R-Word” campaign and advocates embracing the politically-correct term of “people with intellectual disabilities.”

All of the funds raised will go to the programs and services of The Center.

Hi Ms. Leona,

I just wanted to write you a quick note to let you know

about something that happened last weekend while John was

with me for a visit. My son Neil and his wife, Alicia, were with

us as well. We had lunch on the Strand in Galveston and then

went shopping afterwards. While we were at lunch Alicia was

telling John how she would like for him to make her a pink and

green fish as he had made some fish in the past for me and one

for my other daughter-in-law, Carrie, but Alicia did not yet

have one of his creations.

After lunch when we were strolling and walking the Strand

we wandered into Eibands Gallery and there was a Willow

River Farms pink and green fish which we purchased for Alicia

immediately. John was so very, very proud and I took a picture

of him in front of Eibands holding the fish and have attached

it here for you. It was just so amazingly serendipidous that we

found it and that it is pink and green, as she wanted that. We

all could scarcely believe it!

Keep up the fantastic work you do with the residents. We

sure do appreciate you.

Run for The Center!The Houston Bar

Association held its 29th John J. Eiken-burg Law Week Fun Run on Saturday, March 22, 2014, at downtown’s Sam Houston Park. City streets were filled with

registrants in the 8K Race, the Children’s Run and the 1-Mile Family Walk, and as is the norm, Cullen and Willow River Farms residents were so happy to be a part of it.

Since 1986, the Houston Bar Associa-tion has raised over $1 Million for The Center. Special Thanks to Houston Bar Association for their continued support!

Introducing – The Beaded Pig!Willow River Farms, in San Felipe, TX, has been the

hub for The Center’s artisan activities and sales, and now the West Dallas campus in Houston is thrilled to an-nounce the opening of The Beaded Pig, an onsite retail store created to support the client team’s amazing artisan craft work. Here you’ll find creations of beautiful paper maché piggy banks, beaded crosses, initials of statement, and fleur de lis – each item is also available to be custom ordered in the color – and size – of your choice!

The shop also provides iced coffee drinks, iced tea drinks, as well as hot tea and coffee, and pastries for a reasonable donation of your choosing. You can even pick up a tin of Gingersnaps or Choco Nips to snack on! The setting is comfortable and interactive – so the next time you are on the West Dallas campus, stop by build-ing 3 and visit The Beaded Pig. You will be glad you did!

Will to live — her’s and ours Shaundra Williams came to The Center in 1986 after graduating from high school in

1985. Shaundra eventually moved to Cullen Residence Hall in 1999 and enjoyed attend-ing the day services program. In August of 2000, Shaundra’s mother inquired about a Personal Care Plan for Shaundra and decided that this was something she wanted to set up for her daughter. The LifeCare Program would take over the mother’s role when she could no longer do so as her health was significantly declining. Her mother passed away in February of 2001.

As stated in the will, The LifeCare Program started to maintain things, like visit-ing with her family, celebrating her birthday, taking her out for dinner and a movie, taking her to the doctor along with other personal needs, just as if her mother was still

around. In 2009, Shaundra began to have some medical complications that required skilled nursing. She eventually was placed in a nursing home; however, due to complications from pneumonia and other health related issues, she was rushed to the hospital where more aggressive treatment was necessary. After many discussions with doctors, the outlook was bleak and she was not responding to treatment. End of life directives were being considered as doctors gave a “wait and see” perspective on how the current treatment was working, but that did not give much hope. All the while, Shaundra’s guard-ian through the LifeCare Program continually monitored her progress, made decisions on her behalf (just as her mother would have), and received updates on her health.

Shaundra got stronger and after a lengthy stay in the hospital, she was released to a rehabilitation nursing center for her con-tinued recovery. Again, she developed pneumonia for a second time and once again end of life directives were considered.

Shaundra fooled everyone and has made a 100% recovery from her two bouts with pneumonia and other related medi-cal issues. She is back at The Center living in Cullen Residence Hall where she first lived in 1999. She is even working again in the Adult Training and Employment Services Program. Her story is one of a will to live and a mother who planned for her to be cared for after her passing. The LifeCare Program was there for Shaundra every step of the way and will continue to be here for her now and in the future!

United Way Days of CaringFebruary 21, 2014: For the third year in a row,

Cameron’s PCS division brought 87 volunteers to the West Dallas campus and conquered eight projects!

1. Reclaimed “the hill” for all parking spaces by clearing debris, brush growth and repositioning parking stumps. Four new spaces were cleared!!

2. Removed and disposed of greenhouse framing structure3. Repaired/replaced expansion joints in campus courtyard,

and building a ramp – easing the area for walking and enjoyment

4. Painted cafeteria and rooms5. Fixed wooden fence6. Cleaned and put flowers under stairs in cafeteria7. Provided NEW patio umbrella’s for 10 tables throughout

campus8. Cleaned, recycled and disposed of trash from parking

area behind Cullen Residence Hall

Many thanks to ALL volunteers! Tackling projects of this magnitude takes a lot of pre-planning to successfully execute them; thus, major thanks to event coordinators Lawrence Rominger and Carolina Gonzalez, and team leaders Brian Henry, Cali Wood, Claudia Neagoe, Darren Marek, Halhe Ghadi, Hector Ornelas, Joe Longoria, Linda Richards, Liz Turney, Tyler Waite and Tyson Dailey.

Feb. 26, 2014: Cameron corporate division joined The Center’s Adult Training program in a classroom environment – bringing with them great spirit and energy – along with beautiful picture books for each classroom and the Adult Activity Center to enjoy for-ever! Thank you, AGAIN, Cameron!

nival sponsored by the National Charity League Bayou City group of mother/daughter volunteers. Activities included a pet-ting zoo, face painting, a photo booth and creating flower pots! The clients enjoyed a sunny afternoon outdoors at Cullen and the volunteers enjoyed visiting with our amazing individuals!

Friends of Cullen was established in the 70s following the development of The Center’s Cullen Residence Hall program, created to accommodate living and learning environments for individuals with intellectual disabilities. If you’re a parent, guardian, family member or a designated contact, consider joining Friends of Cullen at our next meeting as we work to fur-ther benefit residents and assist them with needs not necessarily provided by The Center. As a committee member, you’ll help us:

• Provide a forum for expression of ideas and cocerns among members and Cullen’s administrators

• Conduct business in a manner to remain a self-sustaining organization through donations

• Disperse funds for the benefit of Cullen residents Let’s make a difference for Cullen residents! Come join us

March 7, 2014: Houston Community College- Spring Branch student volunteers joined The Center to join the teams in the Workshop. Six individuals joined the workshop teams in their work completing a Capri Sun repack, working the shrink wrap machine and so much more! Their support was greatly appreciated – and the volunteers were eager to say “we can’t wait to come back! That was so much fun”! We are glad to have HCC volunteers on The Center’s campus anytime!

March 11, 2014: Xavier Educational Academy 28 middle school volunteers, students and staff, took time out to learn about The Center on Tuesday March 11th. The middle school volunteers were able to learn about the Gingersnaps organization from Alicia Lee herself, and aide in the cookie work through a group participa-tion project. Students then went on to visit with the AAC (Adult Activity Center) and participate in bingo, Wii bowling and painting projects with the clients. The students were able to pass on their connection with respect to all individuals, and The Center gained valu-able new young ambassadors! We can’t wait for the next group of student volunteers!

Human Resources keeps clients and employees aware of public issues

In support of National Go Red for Women Day, sponsored by the American Heart Association, staff and clients wore red, conducted activities, and received informa-tion on fighting the number one killer of women: heart disease. Center clients also participated in Super Bowl of Hunger at Kroger’s in Galveston!

The Center’s Supported Living Program at Cullen Residence Hall

Houston is a city that has continued to pro-mote opportunities for individuals of all abilities and its foundation has allowed growth in many aspects of its long standing organizations. At Cullen Residence Hall, nestled in the heart of the West Dallas campus at The Center, lies the Sup-portive Living Program. While The Center offers many residential options for adults with disabili-ties, the Supportive Living Program offers oppor-tunities for self-sufficient adults to live indepen-dently in the bustling community of River Oaks with remarkable views of downtown Houston. Opportunities for employment are also available with The Center’s Momentum Industries program to those Supported Living residents.

The Supported Living Program currently exists on the 3rd and 6th floors of Cullen Residence Hall but the program is soon to expand to the 4th and 5th floors. The Sup-ported Living Program offers a spacious private room and bathroom with two different scenic options for individuals. The room rates include free WiFi, cable ready built-in desks, all utilities and meals at Cullen Residence Hall’s cafeteria that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. At this time, The Center has 36 adults currently in the program and the expansion will allow 30 more individuals the opportunity to join the Supported Living Program.

Volunteers NeededVolunteers are an integral

team member at The Center on both our West Dallas and Willow River Farm campuses. We encourage you to call us and schedule a site tour, visit a variety of work groups and learn about our volunteer opportuni-ties ranging from beautification to client interaction to administrative support!
