alp appeal / anziehend
alp appeal / fascinating
Some claim they can hear the mountains beckoning. Some speak of the charm and grandeur of the Alps. But we simply admit to the fact that the Alps fascinate us in a very special way. They enchant us. High 4000m peaks inspire awe, cragged rock massifs and steep rock faces take our breath away, and the cheerfulness of the blooming mountain meadows simply fills us with joy.
Only the Alps seem to succeed in being idyllic, dangerous and grand all at the same time. Traditions are the solid foundation of the alpine region, and it‘s probably this feeling of rootedness that allows the people to risk keeping in step with the times. That is exactly what ALP APPEAL is designed to convey: a love of nature, tried and proven fabrics and details combined with modern cuts and functional materials.
alpiniStS / a good trait
Sometimes it is said of the alpine natives that they are not only proud, but stubborn too. We choose not to pass judgment on that opinion. But it cannot be denied how authentic and deep-rooted they are. For the benefit of this collection we malojans turned into real alpinists. The colors we borrowed from the alpine climber outfits of the 70s. And just like the Alps exist as an almost independent, complete cosmos, we likewise created the color scheme for our collection. We cheerfully ignore current trends and work with clear, strong colors; green, dark blue, white, red, pink, yellow and brown. We based all of the designs on the alpine environment, the scenery and the animals, and on the traditional way of life. You might think we‘re crazy to transfer the patina of old wood paintings to modern shirts, but that is exactly our understanding of the connection between old and new, tradition and modernity. Because we do not only want to honor the Alps as a muse for our designs we also work with native manufacturers who master traditional techniques and produce locally. Our approach to tradition is twofold, picking up on elements of folklore and employing local manu-facturers. For example, the woven wool jackets that were produced by the manufacturer Grasegger in Garmisch-Partenkirchen originate from the Steiner loden production In Schladming, which has existed for more than 110 years. Our hand knit jackets are made of pure wool from the Chiemgau and are hand-made in collaboration with a relief project in Armenia. Our fostership and manufacturing orders help five women to secure their families‘ livelihoods. Alp appeal and alp ethics are often intertwined. Of course the famous „Alpenglühen“, that amazing alpine sky and the purple rim of clouds, is impossible to transfer to fabric. But we did succeed in capturing the meadow and wood fragrances with a special fragrance print procedure. The women‘s range recaptures the summer - the shirts exude the scent of mountain meadows: buttercups, carnations, gentians. And the reason why our friends will call us truly scrump-tious next winter is certainly on account of the cinnamon smell of our woolen winter hats. But now get out! Go enjoy nature, climb the peaks and make tracks in all that powder!

Guido Tshugg is our good friend and maloja team rider from day one. His annual “X-Mas Jam” is legend and was in itself more than enough of an excuse to visit his house track in the Allgäu to do our Alp Appeal fashion take. Biking in the winter in snow and ice? Impossible! Not im-possible, Guido claimed, nine years ago and took out a lease on the stretch of terrain underneath the A96 autobahn from Wangen to Lindau, and built a world cup quality track. Under-neath the roof of this bridge weather becomes irrelevant and you don’t need to fly south to practice in the winter season. Oh winter – the time to pack your bike away and say farewell to your two-wheel soulmates. That was one of the reasons why Guido staged his X-Mas Jam for the first time in 2002, and the other one was that he just wanted to celebrate the official end of the bike season with his friends and ac-quaintances, ride on a dirt track and just have fun. No starting shot, no time-taking, no competition. By now the X-Mas Jam is a kind of great big family get-together. Professionals, amateurs, kids and youngsters – everyone looks forward to this time of the year when they meet underneath the bridge to extend the bike season by a little bit, listen to music, drink hot spicy red wine, and enjoy Mama Tschugg’s delicious food. You can tell that so many drivers have been coming every year by all the different maloja hat designs you see. Every year maloja provides a new knit hat for the active participants. Maybe now you’re all excited to be there next year for Guido’s anniversary jam on December 3, 2011 under the Nieratz Autobahn Bridge? We’ll be there for sure. It was great this year, Guido!

a return to old values
Life on our planet is becoming more and more complex and faster, too. No wonder that so many people are reverting to old values and long for quiet and contemplation and are starting to remember some of the old ways. This development is reflected in fashion, too. A worn loden jacket from the fleamarket, shiny lederhosen from the second hand store – anything goes. The more unusual and contra-dictory the outfit the better, and a new fashion is created. But this is not to say that well matched things are boring and uncreative. The opposite is the case: it is really an art to make different kinds of materials, colors and forms match in harmony. So it’s no surprise that quality and authenticity are in such high demand. It’s nice when a product has a story to tell; where do the materials come from? And who are the people who made them?
Grasegger traditional Clothing manufacturers
It’s not easy to define the German term “Tracht”, it’s really as diverse as the geographical regions in Bavaria. It’s not accurate to say “Tracht” is a rural folk outfit. This kind of cloth-ing really developed out of an interplay of town and country styles that has kept its diversity of different colors, cuts and fabrics till today. The clothing manufacturers Grasegger in Farchant have specialized in the reproduction of original traditional clothing. In their archives they have more than 800 original patterns for traditional jackets that they model their traditional alpine-style clothing after. The loden and silk fabrics are all made in Austria and Bavaria, and are selected with great care – for the most part they come from family businesses that have handed the knowledge of the trade down from one genera-tion to the next over more than a century. Sometimes it takes a lot of research by the Grasegger tailors and designers to find someone who can manufacture the traditional accessories like ribbons and buttons in the old, hand-made way. A pattern for a “Joppe”, the traditional short warm coat, has over 100 parts. But that is exactly what determines the importance and the value of all of the Grasegger products – they are more permanent and serve their wearer for an indefinite time. It’s wonderful that there are people who honor old values and follow traditional ways.
