Malibu High School/Middle School Modernization and Reconstruction
Courtyard ViewCommunity Environment: Malibu High School is the only secondary school in the City of Malibu. The school has an extensive athletic program that includes a large field, outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts and a competition gym. The Library and Auditorium have functions that extend beyond the school, serving as public event spaces. The school shares its campus with the Boys and Girls Club. Garden areas and riparian projects on the school serve as education, training, and joint-use tools. Including plans for extension programs with Santa Monica City College, Malibu High School has become a central and public component of a diverse community.
Library EntryLearning Environment: Through the construction of a new library, administration offices, and athletic facilities, and the renovation of existing facilities and configurations, Malibu High School seeks to create a memorable campus to enhance the learning environment for future generations. Based on a traditional 9-12 curriculum, the campus also accommodates shared middle school facilities and will house various joint-use and community programs throughout the calendar year. The result is an interactive learning environment that connects students with their surrounding neighborhood in a safe, dynamic campus.
Street ViewLearning Environment (cont’d): The Schematic Design proposal envisions several crucial changes to the existing Malibu campus that will enhance the Middle and High Schools. The primary addition to the campus is a multifunctional, two-level structure located along the southwestern edge of the campus. This new building will serve as the face of the campus and a gateway to both the middle and high school areas. The building will house administration offices, instructional spaces, and an expanded library.
Site AnalysisPhysical Environment: Malibu High School sits on a hillside ¼ mile from California’s Pacific Coast Highway. The site has generous views of the Pacific Ocean and Santa Monica Mountains and shares land with the adjacent Cabrillo Elementary School and Malibu Equestrian Park. The surrounding neighborhood is a Rural Residential Zone, comprised of large dwellings with more than two acres of land each. The school has an Institutional zoning designation as part of the Local Coastal Program of the City of Malibu.
Student Drop-OffPlanning Process: Through the design phase, the architect had the opportunity to work alongside school officials and representatives to examine the needs of students, educators, and administrators. The many visits, workshops and meetings on-site gave the entire team an understanding of the dynamics and challenges the school faces. Community roundtables anchored the planning process, allowing the design team to incorporate key neighborhood issues – sustainability, open space, traffic control, and security – in the final design. The result is a school that responds to community needs while meeting the requirements of an evolving student body.
LobbyPlanning Process (cont’d): The planning process centered on three overlapping issues: the intelligent use of the site, the creative resolution of program, and the concern for the client’s budget and schedule. The process is an investigation of the functional, programmatic and technical requirements of the project. The architect sought to discover the school’s full potential while making responsible contributions to the environment.
