Take II— The Malibu Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Center is a dynamic organization comprised of more than 600 businesses that help shape the economy, promote community awareness, and set the pace for the future of the City of Malibu and beyond. Through the Chamber’s successful programs, volunteer committees, and business events, we provide the services and resources to help your business grow while gaining exposure in the community.

In these turbulent times, it is now that we must find new and inventive ways to continue to do business, which takes Courage. Courage in business leadership is expressed in many ways. It can be changing a vision and strategy. It can be maintaining an ethical stance in the face of personal risks. Courage can be a key factor in driving out the fear that is prevalent in many companies. It can be about holding to a strategic choice and transformation efforts in the face of severe economic changes. It can also be the steps you must take to ‘change things up,’ or ‘Take II!’

A business environment like this one requires managers of any business to be courageous. I suggest taking it a step further by adopting courage as a key value of your organization and inculcating it into your culture. The courage to listen, act, make mistakes, admit failure and most importantly stay the course is essential to survival in times like these and separates successful businesses from the pack in more economically stable times. As we move into the new year we are reminded that the only thing constant is change. But as things change there are always familiar elements that are consistent and comforting. This is what a great sequel is based on: looking at the best and favorite elements of a past work and reinventing and improving upon them. This year we are introducing ‘Malibu, The Sequel’, the next installment of our popular Business & Community Directory that has become the go-to guide for locals and visitors alike when it comes to finding products and services in our beautiful city by the ocean. As with any good sequel you can expect a few new twists. This year the directory will be provided in both the traditional printed version as well as electronically, thus helping to reach a wider audience while simultaneously reducing our carbon footprint. Our new and improved web site (www.malibu.org) is becoming the premier portal to Malibu and we will be posting video clips there of our members telling their stories in their own words.

We will be highlighting how some of our members have reinvented themselves, not just surviving but thriving in these difficult times. We look forward to hearing and sharing your success stories which we hope will inspire others to “take two” and invent their own sequel that’s even better than the original!

backwards. We need to create the change that we are looking for, and the Chamber looks forward to being a partner in that success. The Chamber has a dedicated staff and numerous volunteers who work tirelessly for one goal: to help make our local businesses successful. We are there for you, whether it’s providing networking and selling opportunities, promoting your business both locally and nationally, or addressing the legal and regulatory issues that concern you most with local and state representatives. We speak with the voice of over 500 member businesses whom we represent, and when we speak people listen.

We are optimistic about the opportunities for 2011 but we know that many challenges await us as well. We believe that we’re all in this together and that by working together we can help each-other to succeed. The Chamber has many exciting programs in store, from sequels of old favorites like the renowned Malibu Arts Festival and ‘Malibu Secrets Too’ to reaching out across the world and exploring the possibility of “sister cities”. On behalf of the staff and the Directors of the Malibu Chamber of Commerce I would like to thank our members for the opportunity to serve and represent them, and wish them all success in 2011 and the years to come!

The Malibu Chamber of Commerce is exhausting all business building opportunities to ensure our members have every tool accessible to them for growth. Through publications, mixers, business roundtables, events, committee’s, workshops, social networking, counseling and outreach, we strive to promote our businesses and properly keep each one updated on what is new, what is unique, and what is growing.

The Malibu Chamber is a dynamic organization comprised of more than 500 businesses that help shape our local economy, and promote the community and governmental awareness with the City of Malibu. The Chamber holds several events that directly impact the economic

progress of the city, such as the Malibu Arts Festival held annually.

to grow and develop, participating in efforts to improve our quality of

The Chamber hosts several events which bring the Malibu community

Veterans Day Celebration, Mayor’s Luncheon and ‘Taste of Malibu’

and state elected officials are educated on the impact their decisions

will have on our economy. We communicate our concerns to legislation

and the business community through the Malibu Business Advocate

Newsletter, e-mail and fax alerts, and editorials in local newspapers.

EngaginginPoliticalActionThe Malibu Chamber positions itself “in the heart” of politics by

working with City Council members and taking positions on state and

local ballot measures. It is the Chamber’s job to analyze the impact

each issue will have on local businesses, and to relay this information to

our members and the community.

EnvironmentalAffairs When: 3rd thursday @ 4:00pm Where: Malibu chamber of commerce office With the 27 miles of coastal access, Malibu has a very important position to participate in and recommend to business owners and the public on issues relating to keeping our coastline safe and healthy. This committee provides workshops, as well as the Wallflower Festival & Eco Home Tour & Expo in April.

The City of Malibu was incorporated on March 28, 1991. Located in Northwest Los Angeles

County, the City has 21 miles of coastline along the Pacific Ocean and has a population of

12,575. The five member City Council is elected at-large to serve four year terms. The Mayors

office is rotated annually among all Council members. As elected officials, the City Council

members represent the citizens of Malibu in the governing process and act on their behalf with

regard to regional and local issues as well as State and Federal legislation. The City Council

convenes regular meetings on the second and fourth Monday of every month and holds

occasional special meetings. The City Council appoints the City Manager, City Attorney, and

City Treasurer/Auditor, as well as members of the City’s Board and Commissions.

The City of Malibu intends to lead by example and empower its residents, business owners, builders and community organizations to tread more lightly on the earth. One of the main ways in which the City intends to promote conscientiousness is through the encouragement of green development projects. The following projects are ones where the City has taken a second look or a “take two” and has made great strides towards environmental conservation.

CityHallandtheMalibuLibraryThe City of Malibu purchased the building at 23825 Stuart Ranch Road to be used as a permanent City Hall. The Malibu Library, located at 23519 Civic Center Way, is undergoing a major remodel at this time.

During the review of these projects, the City has taken a comprehensive look

to determine how to best incorporate green building in conjunction with modernization and community benefit improvements. The City has set a goal to obtain Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design (LEED) certification for these projects. Specific project features include: low flow fixtures and reclaimed water which reduce water consumption by as much as 40 percent; diverting construction waste and using recycled materials; and implementing water efficient landscaping.

LegacyParkWhat was once a previously vacant parcel, this property was given new life as Malibu’s Legacy Park. The City of Malibu decided to “take two” on the use of this property and envisioned a public park that could provide ecological value through habitat

restoration, education and an innovative stormwater and urban runoff project.

BuildingCode– GreenBuildingUpdatesA new state law referred to as Cal Green went into effect on January 1st. The code contains measures for development with the goal of promoting energy efficiency, water efficiency and conservation, material conservation, and environmental quality. Today, the City is working on Local Energy Efficiency Standards, which will further increase the energy efficiency of each building. This will compliment the new law and requires development to not only meet, but exceed, State of California energy requirements.

In summary, the City seeks to take a leadership role in implementing innovative green and sustainable projects.

City of Malibu – Take Two: Green Development


The Malibu Eye Center was started in 1980 by Dr. Gregory O’Connor in a small office just south of the clock tower on Pacific Coast Highway. The practice later moved to Point Dume Plaza, then to the Malibu Country Mart, then finally to its present location at Malibu Village in 1993. Nearly lost in the strip mall fire that claimed seven businesses until late 2006, the practice recently celebrated its 30th anniversary and remains one of the oldest and most stable representations of rebirth and renewal in the community.

“People who love Malibu have to be remarkably resilient,” states Dr. O’Connor. “Malibu is perpetually challenged by wildfire, mudslides, road closures and storming waves.” Recently the community has had to endure an entirely new challenge – a severe economic downturn affecting residents and businesses alike. Meeting this

challenge involved revisiting core values and continuing to emphasize quality of service and product without compromise. “During a crisis, it is critical to remain true to the principles that have allowed your business to endure for this long. When people come to the Malibu Eye Center they know that they are going to get what they need. We did not compromise the integrity of our patient care, nor the product that they receive. We did not cut back on staff, nor did we offer less expensive merchandise or services.” Traditional optometric equipment has now been replaced by the latest state-of-the-art power refractive and scanning technologies.

The Malibu Eye Center was renovated twice by practice manager Salvatore Sampino, in 2003 and following the fire in 2006. The latter proved to be the most dramatic transformation, with a complete reconfiguration, raised ceilings, arched hallways, an ocular-shaped reception area, imported marble and limestone flooring, lighting from Italy and Austria, and a VIP room with copper sinks and projection monitors. Frederic Beausoleil, one of the world’s premier eyewear designers, was called upon to design the entry

concept along with associates of Airbus Industrie, and produced a cylindrical jet-like shopping experience. The eyewear selections are eclectic and extensive, keeping country of origin a primary concern. The eye center soon became a launching pad for the cutting edge of the fashion world – Vivienne Westwood, John Galliano, Iceberg, Costume National, Thakoon, Christian Roth, Missoni, Roberto Cavalli, as well as the re-introduction of Jil Sander, Emilio Pucci and Balenciaga.

“When I first came to work for Dr. O’Connor in 2002,” said Mr. Sampino, “the challenge was to take a practice of unparalleled success and reliability to the next level. When the economy faltered, we did not lose our spirit or our vision. We tried to maintain continuity by launching new product lines along with promotions, special events and personal appearances.” The resulting economic challenges did not hinder the vision, as evidenced by the success of legendary jewelry brands such as Fred, Boucheron, Judith Leiber and David Yurman. The Malibu Eye Center has now become a purveyor of confidence and the barometer of luxury eyecare that the Malibu community deserves.

In today’s economic challenges, entrepreneurs must be able to react to current changing lifestyles and trends as well as to client’s new needs and requirements at a moments notice. Although, we are still actively working with high end interior design clients through Suzanne Furst Interiors, the Luxury-Style Market has changed. Designers have found the need to find new creative paths which will allow for our skills and experience to flourish in other areas of the design industry.

I have recently done this by branching out and forming a new design and marketing company with a longtime friend and colleague Robert Nieto, who comes from the world of strategic branding and marketing. Our previous collaboration on historic restoration projects in Beverly

Hills and public housing projects for the homeless in downtown Los Angeles paved the way for us to form a new venture which we named simply, Collaborative House.

Collaborative House combines the talents of two distinctly different business backgrounds with an affinity for each others passions and talents. Our company is a full service interior design firm with marketing and branding expertise that allows for us to create a powerful synergy of common goals to increase the success of our client projects.

We are committed to interior design excellence. Our mission is that we can change people’s lives through the power of design. Collaborative House currently works with Developers, Architects, Hotel Chains, Corporate Offices and Government subsidized housing. We have recently been awarded a restoration project in South Los Angeles and will be working on a Paul Williams historic building that will be used for the existing

community. We are excited abut continuing to work on projects that can positively change people’s lives.
