PRESS RELEASE

Malaysia Trade & Export Finance Conference brings together more than 170 industry experts

Global Trade Review (GTR) welcomed over 170 top tier experts in the export, supply chain and trade finance industry at the Malaysia Trade & Export Finance Conference 2017. The event took place at the Mandarin Oriental in Kuala Lumpur on March 14.

Supported by leading organisations in the industry including the Malaysian External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE), Exim Bank Malaysia, British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce, International Trade Council, BNY Mellon, ICICI and Bolero, amongst many others, the event provided in-depth discussions, debate and un-paralleled networking opportunities with the market’s top experts.

Decision makers within the market convened to hear timely updates on issues such as government initiatives to increase international trade and investment, the primary business challenges facing the commodity sector and the knock-on effect of the Chinese economic slowdown on Malaysian growth.

Datuk Isham Ishak, Deputy Secretary General-Trade of the Malaysian Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), gave an overview of Malaysia’s trade and investment environment as part of his keynote address. He also shared and elaborated on the government’s initiatives to boost growth through international collaborations, free trade agreements and robust policies.

The conference highlighted five main themes:

• Spotlight on Malaysia• Investment and finance• Digitisation in trade financing• Infrastructure development and intra-regional trade• Islamic financing

Among the notable speakers were Wan Latiff Wan Musa, Deputy CEO of MATRADE, who shared a Malaysian perspective on China’s One Belt One Road (OBOR) policy and its impact on Malaysia’s trade and investment landscape, and Raymond Madden, CEO of the Asian Institute of Finance, who explained the importance of meeting the skills gap for Malaysia’s banking and finance industry amidst digital disruption.

“Malaysia stands to benefit greatly from China’s One Belt One Road (OBOR) initiative as Chinese investment in infrastructure rises. Another important development in Asia and Malaysia in particular, is the advancement in trade digitisation which includes emerging concepts such as fintech and blockchain. Furthermore, Malaysia has one of the most developed markets for Islamic banking; supported by regulation as part of the country’s digital economy initiative,” said conference producer Aliza Mohsin.

“As the demand for alternative sources of finance rises in conjunction with digital disruption, it is important to understand the impact on Islamic financing and how it can compete with traditional sources of investments. Given these recent advancements, it is essential for the industry to stay ahead of the game and leverage on the opportunities that Malaysia has to offer,” she added.

The conference series continues with GTR Asia Trade & Treasury Week which will be held in Singapore from September 5-7. For the latest updates, visit www.gtreview.com/events.
