The striking campus reveals itself within the landscape, from beneath a living grass roof. Located next to the Putrajaya lake, part of the administrative capital’s ‘green continuum’, the building is consciously designed with the environment in mind and is built to Green Building Index (GBI) standards.

Heriot-Watt MalaysiaWhether you are a Malaysian or are travelling from abroad our purpose-built campus in Putrajaya, where we are located, has something to offer for every aspiring graduate.
A fantastic central location
Heriot-Watt University Malaysia’s campus is
based in the modern garden-city of Putrajaya
just 25km south of Malaysia’s capital Kuala
Lumpur. Putrajaya is a growing, dynamic city and
its proximity allows easy access to the extensive
cultural, leisure and retail amenities of the
buzzing metropolis.
Malaysia’s first green campus
Heriot-Watt University Malaysia’s purpose-built
campus opened to students in Putrajaya in
September 2014 and the formal launch took
place on 12 February 2015.
The £35m campus sits on 4.8 acres in a
stunning lakeside location providing exceptional
educational facilities in an excellent environment,
close to the Putrajaya marina and its modern
leisure and sports facilities. This is a fantastic
green area, part of Putrajaya Lake’s ‘green
continuum’, and the building design is a
conscious reference.
A green roof to match
The ‘green campus’ is remarkable for having
the first living grass roof of its kind in Malaysia.
At 300 metres long and 30 metres wide, it is
the most recognisably sustainable feature of the
campus. The roof shades the naturally ventilated
spaces below, reduces thermal transmittance,
and acts as an observation deck, accessible
by glass lift. Other environmentally friendly,
passive design features include campus lighting
‘powered’ by the maximum use of natural
daylight, a rainwater harvesting system and
optimised air-conditioning and thermal control
systems.
A state-of-the-art learning environment
The campus is a state-of-the-art teaching and
learning environment, reflecting our status as a
leading provider of high-quality, professionally
orientated education, knowledge transfer and
research. Architect-designed in conjunction with
educational design specialists, the campus has
been developed with the current generation of
students in mind, to create a dynamic, exciting
place which maximises the potential of its setting
for study and student life.

Go GlobalLEONG CHEE YEAN
Transferred from Malaysia to Edinburgh to complete his BSc (Hons) Actuarial Science
Q: Why did you decide to take partin the Go Global Student Programme at Heriot-Watt?Studying in the UK has always been my goal. When the opportunity of
studying Actuarial Science in both my home country Malaysia and the UK
was presented, I was thrilled. I was able to pursue my studies and widen
my horizons at the same time.
Go Global allowed me to step out of my comfort zone and meet more new
people in a foreign country. It was an excellent opportunity. I did not regret
my decision one bit. I had the opportunity to meet so many wonderful
friends that I am still in contact with today. This memorable experience
is one that I will never forget.
Furthermore, it is also amazing to witness the four seasons which is a
nice change from Malaysia’s hot and humid weather.
Q: Was there anything that you found challenging about studying in the UK?The cold weather needed some getting used to. To give you an idea of
how cold Edinburgh can get, people often joked that summer is a myth in
Edinburgh. The winter in January 2018 was one of the worst winters in
many years. If you are studying abroad for the first time, you also might
feel a little homesick. Remember using technology means your family is
only ever a click or call away. Nonetheless, while overseas, friends are like
your family. Thanks to their companionship, my university life was more
colourful and I felt less homesick.
Q: What advice would you give other students thinking of taking part in Heriot-Watt’s Go Global Student Programme?Take the opportunity and explore the different cities in the UK and European
countries. Travelling opens your eyes to different cultures. If possible you
should learn the local culture while introducing your own to others as well,
and make more new friends!
The Go Global programme is a not-to-be-missed chance to experience
living in different parts of the world! Open your eyes to a new world and
make new lovely memories! Heriot-Watt University presents you with
opportunity and it is yours for the taking.

Student Clubs and SocietiesWe encourage students to get involved in student activities. Student clubs and societies are a great way to meet new people and make friends with students from around the world.
Welcome from Heriot-Watt Student Association President
As a third year student, I see Heriot-Watt
University Malaysia more as a close-knit
community of driven scholars and educators –
a family. With over 50 clubs and societies,
there are many ways for students as well as
staff members to get involved with the
community, whether it be through sweating it
out in a Parkour session by the beautiful
Putrajaya lakeside, competing in e-sports
competitions with fellow students, or simply
lounging in the student common room, taste-
testing artisan coffee with fellow coffee club
members. We take pride in empowering students
to find unique and different ways to express and
diversify themselves that in turn enriches their
student life.
As the Heriot-Watt University Malaysia Student
Association (HWUMSA), we strive to continually
empower the clubs and societies, and organise
unique and varied activities that are inclusive
while championing the wellbeing of all students
on campus. Our goal is to give you the skills
and tools needed to enrich your student life
on campus.

Developing Resilient GraduatesThe advent of the 4th Industrial Revolution has seen the creation of great innovations and the advancement of technology, but it has also created challenges for humankind and in particular our youth.
Generation Z need to be able to adapt to rapid
changes in new technological advancements
that threaten to displace them from employment
in the future. The increase of mental-illnesses
amongst the younger generation is rising at an
alarming rate. More and more young people are
unable to cope with the stress and challenges of
keeping up with their studies, and developing and
maintaining meaningful social relationships.
Positive Education which is based on the science
of well-being and happiness is an approach to
education that blends academic learning with
character and well-being; preparing students
with life skills such as: grit, optimism, resilience,
growth mindset, engagement, and mindfulness,
amongst others.
At Heriot-Watt University Malaysia, we have
recognised these challenges and so as well as
focusing on developing academic excellence,
we have incorporated positive education
philosophies and practices into programmes
which focus on building mental resilience and
a sense of well-being.

Youth Transformation ProgrammeSpecially created for post-secondary school students, the Youth Transformation Programme has been designed to support every student to their realise their full potential.
Students are encouraged to engage in a positive
transformation by focusing on developing their
emotional intelligence, creativity, understanding
their own personalities, their strengths and
weaknesses, and developing a long-term vision
and mission. This is done by setting realistic
SMART goals through engaging and interesting
activities. Using a proven emotional intelligence
framework, and engaging activities focusing on
expressing positive emotions such as empathy
and gratitude, students are taught self-
awareness, self-management, social awareness
and relationship management.
On completion of the YTP, students will develop a
strong sense of self-confidence, ability to express
their emotions in a positive way, and be able
to relate comfortably to their peers and better
manage their relationship with friends and family,
providing a smooth transition and preparing them
for the challenges of University studies.
The YTP is open to students who have achieved
a minimum of 5C’s in relevant subjects in SPM,
IGCSE or equivalent.

Actuarial Mathematics and StatisticsOur team of leading academics is internationally recognised for research, scholarship and teaching in mathematical and actuarial sciences.
Heriot-Watt’s Actuarial Sciences programme appealed to me, as it is among the top-ranked in the field. The course is prepared so that the skills
learned are directly transferrable to the workplace. The modules not only strengthen our theoretical knowledge, but also ensure that we

excellent reputation with employers. Successful
careers include positions in the insurance, finance
and consulting sectors, as well as in more general
areas such as accounting, banking or teaching.
Teaching and AssessmentTeaching is delivered through a combination of
lectures, tutorials, computer labs and project work.
