    MALAD

    Malad is a northern suburb of Mumbai.

    History

    In the 19th century, Malad constituted of Orlem (also known as Valnai)

    which was a hamlet of just about 12 families. In 1880, Fr. Joseph Maria Braz

    de Souza built a private chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes at Orlem.

    In 1882, the chapel was officially declared a part of the Apostolate of

    Bombay and affiliated to the church of Our Lady of Assumption, Kandivali.

    Later, Fr. Justin built the first school, the St Anne's High School, in 1915.

    Through his efforts, Orlem was constituted as a separate parish in a decree

    dated July 2, 1916.

    Other traditionally ancient settlements in Malad were villages occupied by

    the local East-Indian Community, Bhandari and Kolis who are known to be

    the original native inhabitants of Mumbai . These villages include Kharodi,

    Rathodi, Malwani, Marve, Aksa Village, Madh and so on. All of these above

    The approximate population is 1,561,938 with anadditional day-time floating population of 100,000.

    Malad, in keeping with the diverse nature of Mumbai, has

    a mix of people from all over India. The originalInhabitants are the Koli community, which thrived inpockets, such as Marve, Malwani, Madh and ManoriIsland. Apart from the Koli community the suburban townhas a large East Indian Community. FollowingChristianity's arrival large numbers of the residents wereconverted to Christianity. During the late 1960s influxesof immigrants, mainly South Indians, Gujaratis and

    Mainland Marathis diversified the demographics of theregion. The 80's and 90's saw major population growth.The Malwani Colony supposedly is home to one ofMumbai's largest Muslim populations. It was heavilypolarised during the 1992 riots. The latest immigrantshave been from UP, Bihar and many from Orissa and W.Bengal.

    Malad is popular for its beaches.

    Aksa Beach:

    Aksa Beach is a popular beach and a vacation spot in Aksa villageat Malad, Mumbai, India. It is situated close to Malvani.

    This beach was one of the most silent and least visited beaches. It was veryclean you could find a large variety of snails and shells. It is a popularweekend destination with youngsters. It is dotted with many private

    cottages and hotels, some of which are rented out to tourists and visitors

    Marve Beach

    Marve Beachis located in the Western Suburb of Malad in the city of Mumbai, India.

    Ferry Services to the Essel World and Water kingdom Amusement Parks

    and Manori are available at its north end. Ferry service to Manori is provided by BEST.You can also carry your two wheelers onto the Ferry to Manori Island. Marve beach

    may be reached from Malad Railway Station (West side) by BEST bus no 272.

    Autorickshaws and taxis are available round the clock.
