Makir, a Great Name

• 1This was the allotment for the tribe of Manasseh as Joseph's firstborn, that is, for Makir, Manasseh's firstborn. Makir was the ancestor of the Gileadites, who had received Gilead and Bashan because the Makirites were great soldiers. (Josh 17:1)

• 23and saw the third generation of Ephraim's children. Also the children of Makir son of Manasseh were placed at birth on Joseph's knees. (Gen 50:23)

I. Makir is the only male of his family generation.

• 28The descendants of Joseph by their clans through Manasseh and Ephraim were: 29The descendants of Manasseh: through Makir, the Makirite clan (Makir was the father of Gilead); through Gilead, the Gileadite clan. 30These were the descendants of Gilead: through Iezer, the Iezerite clan; through Helek, the Helekite clan; 31through Asriel, the Asrielite clan; through Shechem, the Shechemite clan; 32through Shemida, the Shemidaite clan; through Hepher, the Hepherite clan. 33(Zelophehad son of Hepher had no sons; he had only daughters, whose names were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah and Tirzah.) 34These were the clans of Manasseh; those numbered were 52,700. II. Makir takes good care of his third generation.

• 14The descendants of Manasseh: Asriel was his descendant through his Aramean concubine. She gave birth to Makir the father of Gilead. 15Makir took a wife from among the Huppites and Shuppites. His sister‘s name was Maacah. Another descendant was named Zelophehad, who had only daughters. 16Makir’s wife Maacah gave birth to a son and named him Peresh. His brother was named Sheresh, and his sons were Ulam and Rakem. (NIV, 1Chr 7:14-16)

• 16And Maacah, the woman/(grand daughter) of Machir bore a son, and she called his name Peresh; and the name of his brother was Sheresh; and his sons were Ulam and Rakem.

• 17The son of Ulam: Bedan. These were the sons of Gilead son of Makir, the son of Manasseh. (1Chr 7:17)

III. 1/2 tribe of Manasseh, East of Jordan, was brave to conquer.

• 33Then Moses gave to the Gadites, the Reubenites and the half-tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan--the whole land with its cities and the territory around them. 34The Gadites built up Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer, 35Atroth Shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah, 36Beth Nimrah and Beth Haran as fortified cities, and built pens for their flocks. 37And the Reubenites rebuilt Heshbon, Elealeh and Kiriathaim, 38as well as Nebo and Baal Meon (these names were changed) and Sibmah. They gave names to the cities they rebuilt. (Num 32:33-38)

III. 1/2 tribe of Manasseh, East of Jordan, was brave to conquer.

• 39The descendants of Makir son of Manasseh went to Gilead, captured it and drove out the Amorites who were there. 40So Moses gave Gilead to the Makirites, the descendants of Manasseh, and they settled there. 41Jair, a descendant of Manasseh, captured their settlements and called them Havvoth Jair. 42And Nobah captured Kenath and its surrounding settlements and called it Nobah after himself. (Num 32:39-42)

IV. Even the son-in-law is a brave man.

• 21Later, Hezron (the descendant of Judah) lay with the daughter of Makir the father of Gilead (he had married her when he was sixty years old), and she bore him Segub. 22Segub was the father of Jair, who controlled twenty-three towns in Gilead. (1Chr 2:21-22).

IV. Even the son-in-law is a brave man.

• 14Jair, a descendant of Manasseh, took the whole region of Argob as far as the border of the Geshurites and the Maacathites; it was named after him, so that to this day Bashan is called Havvoth Jair.) (Deut 3:14)

V. The Five Courageous Daughters• 1The daughters of Zelophehad son of Hepher, the son of

Gilead, the son of Makir, the son of Manasseh, belonged to the clans of Manasseh son of Joseph. The names of the daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah and Tirzah. They approached 2the entrance to the Tent of Meeting and stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the leaders and the whole assembly, and said, 3"Our father died in the desert. He was not among Korah's followers, who banded together against the LORD, but he died for his own sin and left no sons. 4Why should our father's name disappear from his clan because he had no son? Give us property among our father's relatives." 5So Moses brought their case before the LORD (Num 27:1-5)

V. The Five Courageous Daughters

• The Lord said “yes”. If a man has no son, the daughter will inherit his property. If a man has no children then his next of kin will. (Num 27:11)

• The leaders of Manasseh asked Moses, “How about if they shall marry into other tribe?”(Num 36:1-4)

• Moses, “You are right, they shall marry only to the men of the same tribe.” (Num 36:5-6)

V. The Five Courageous Daughters

• Makir is a brave soldier, a great soldier.• The descendants of Makir are brave.• The son-in-law is brave.• The daughters are brave.

Conclusions

• Makir is brave. When others are fortifying for defense, he took offence to clear out the enemy.

• His bravery is not only in the battle field, but also in taking up the responsibility in rearing the family and pass down the heritage.

• His brave spirit make his people honored to carry his name, make his sons and daughters more brave than common people.
