Mrs Chan (a resident) Mr Lee (a factory owner)

44444 Do you know why Mr Lee locates his factory near a residential area? Complete the speechbubble in Figure 8.3.

It makes sense to locate my factorynear a residential area because

Low-income residential areas arelocated near industrial areas like CheungSha Wan and San Po Kong. Sometimes, residential flats and industrial activities areeven found in the same building.

High-income residential areas arefound far away from factories. They are

in the suburbs or other locations withbeautiful scenery, such as the Peak, Mid-Levels and Repulse Bay.

From this information, we can see thatthe locations of these two types ofresidential areas are very different. Do youknow why?

Chapter 8

Why are the high-income residential areasfar away from the industrial areas? Why are the high-income residential areasfar away from the industrial areas?

Journey to work doesn’t matter anymore! The transport infrastructure in Hong Kong has improvedgreatly in the last decade (Figure 8.5). This facilitates themovement of vehicles and people. ‘Journey to work’ has becomea less important factor affecting people’s choice of residence.

High-income people usually have private carsand can afford a longer journey to work. Also, they prefer a better living environment withmore open spaces and beautiful scenery(Figure 8.6). Living near factories is notdesirable.

The close proximity between residentialand industrial land uses in some areas leadsto land use conflicts. This causes a lot ofproblems and worsens the living environmentof nearby residents.

Figure 8.6 A high-income residential areawith beautiful scenery Repulse Bay

Low-income people usually live near industrialareas (Figure 8.4). This helps them shorten theirjourney to work and saves a lot on transportcosts. Also, the factory owners can recruit laboureasily from a local labour pool.
