  • 4. *KEY POINTS* Todays Transition Forum is a unique networking opportunity to support you help other people* You shouldnt work in isolation in schools. Today you have an opportunity to network and build capacity* Ruths said successful schools where schools that: Build partnership and leadership capacity Engage with parents Cluster with other schools, with industry Where schools are flexible in clearing time for students Have a Plan B for their students.
  • 5. *Rob Gibson suggested:Its not what you know, its who you know andwho they know When you create effective networks andcultivate relationships you build opportunities foryour students, andthe contacts you make today and the connections you establish can help develop the level of success needed to assist your students.
  • 6. *Rob made a number of key points:* Good Networking is finding ways to be helpful to others, its not about What do I get out of it! be a giver not a taker.* In building sustainable relationships we need to know what is most important to them!* Listen and ask questions and learn about people is the key to relationship building. Find out, what is important to them, and of cause they need to know, what is important to you.* Make this part of your routine to help people. Helping other people succeed they are most likely to help you succeed* Always stay in touch not just when you need something* Consider people you need to reconnect with.* Face to face is more effective its about dialogue not monologue
  • 7. *Building your network . Remember the acronym LINK * L LINE OF WORK what I do. What their line of work is.* I - BE INTERESTED IN PEOPLE- What is their interest outside of work. Build the personal connection.* N - NEEDS - What do they need, what are they looking to achieve.* K KNOW WHO THEY KNOW and what they know
  • 8. ** They target young people at risk who have left school, or who are thinking of leaving school, to continue with their education, and ultimately, gain a Year 12 (or equivalent) level education.* They provide short term intervention and individualised and flexible case management to assist young people to remain engaged or re-engage with education and to improve their ability to make positive life choices.* They run re-engaging and outreach activities for young people in the community and work to strengthen services.
  • 9. *The Partnership Broker program is focused on buildingpartnerships to support students to attain Year 12 orequivalent qualifications They will:* Create new partnerships and enhance existing partnerships between your school, industry, parents and the local community.* Assist schools to enter into arrangements that will provide learning experiences for the students to improve levels of participation, engagement and attainment.* Work with schools to identify needs, and work with the school partners to achieve these partnership needs.* Design programs to foster a strategic and sustainable, whole of community approach to improving education and transition outcomes for the student.
  • 10. *The Career Centre provides free and independent training information and career guidance and multi-modal website. The Centre can provide:* Information about education and training courses* Information about skills shortages* Assist if a student is unsure about career direction or learning options* Assist a student with career planning and career decision making.* Explore occupational, industry and labour market information* Discover career interests* Clarify skills and values* Look at options and provide help to make good choices* Create a plan for action.
  • 11. ** There are 14 main Workforce Development Centres across WA, including eight regional centres, four metropolitan and two specialist providers that deliver high quality career development services from 34 sites throughout the State. They offer:* Personalised career guidance sessions: providing students with objective and professional career guidance.* Career action plans: a career practitioner will work with a student to develop an action plan tailored to their needs providing information on training options, job and labour market information and other referral information.* Employability workshops: assisting students with job search skills.* School based activities: providing career guidance workshops for students at your school.
  • 12. ** Promote services for Aboriginal people through its mobile vans / exhibition facilities during outreach visits across metropolitan and regional Western Australia* Provide access to an on-site auditorium that can be used by service providers to host forums to inform Aboriginal job seekers about services* Provide advice on cultural competency training and workplace mentoring to support individual students transition into the workforce* Provide advice and information to address barriers to Aboriginal workforce participation.
  • 13. ** Support Vocational Education and Training in schools to align with local employment opportunities* They promote and support careers and career pathways* Formulate market intelligence on skills supply and demand, in particular, current or emerging skills shortages important for student career planning* Consult with all stakeholders including industry, training organisations and the government to provide quality advice and information on training and related matters to schools and the community* Provide a leadership role in promoting the training industry, including partnerships between industry and the training sector* Provide high level strategic information and advice on the training needs and priorities of industry to schools* Engage with industry to gather intelligence for the development of the Environmental Scan and Workforce Development Plan for WA* Coordinate the establishment and variation of traineeships and apprenticeships
