• Purpose:– To be able to count different numbers of coins

that add up to $1 and make change when given a dollar bill.

Each student should be able to do the following:

• Objectives:• Make change using coins for values up to one

dollar.• Model, represent, and explain addition as

combining sets and counting on.• Model, represent, and explain subtraction as

comparison, take-away, and part-to-whole.

Important Values To Remember

• Penny: A penny is worth 1 cent.– And it looks like this..

• Nickel: A nickel is worth 5 cents.– And it looks like this..

• Dime: A dime is worth 10 cents.– And it looks like this..

• Quarter: A quarter is worth 25 cents.– And it looks like this..

REMEMBER:

1 dollar = 100 cents

Why Do We Need to Make Change?

• It is important to know how to make change when buying items we like or need. We have

to count money when shopping at the grocery store, or buying gifts for our friends.

How Many Does It Take to Make $1?

• Since a penny is worth 1 cent, it takes 100 pennies to make

$1.

• Since a nickel is worth 5 cents, it

takes 20 nickels to make $1.

• Since a dime is worth 10 cents, it takes 10 dimes to

make $1.

• Since a quarter is worth 25 cents, it

takes 4 quarters to make $1.

How Do We Make Change?

• To make change for one dollar, we must use SUBTRACTION. – [We know 1 dollar is the same as 100 cents,

so we subtract the value we are paying from 100 cents.]

• For example, if we go to buy our friend a gift for 50 cents, we will subtract 50 cents from 100 cents.

» 100cents – 50cents = 50cents» [So, we are left with 50 cents after we pay using 1

dollar.]

What Can We Expect?

• In the last problem we know we were left with 50 cents. What types of coins could we expect from the cashier if we are getting 50 cents? We can use SUBTRACTION again or ADDITION to solve this problem.

– We could have 2 quarters, because 1 quarter is 25 cents, and 50-25=25.

– We could have 5 dimes, because 10+10+10+10+10=50.

• There are many different types of coins we could receive that would add up to 50 cents!
