No one is a stranger to the morass of the Big Apple - soaring skyscrapers, pedestrian scrambles and the endless dribble of medallion taxis. As described in Paul Auster's City of Glass, the author

recounts such an experience when ensnared in the vast asphalt jungle of New York. First, he loses his way geographically, but is soon lost in thought when confronting the immensity of the metropolis. The semblance of orderliness of New York's grid pattern is thus gradually abated as

he wanders deeper into ritualised chaos.

It is thus the aim of this project to recreate the experience of being lost in a space that proceeds to evoke contemplation. The name 'Mayoiga', which in Japanese means 'house of mystery' and

'house to get lost in', derives her architectural language from Mies van der Rohe's canonical work, Farnsworth House. This has been translated into a rich yet unobstructed space of expressive

vertical structural members and horizontal slabs of different heights. Walls and fins, albeit slightly offset, line up in a fashion that guides one into the labyrinth. Additionally, they appear to meet at

some points, creating openings that allow guided views into the interior. The skylight located next to the most private room in this labyrinth offers a short respite in a space that otherwise seems

entangled onto itself.
