A Message from the President

Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the KSDC Board of Directors, I invite you to join us in Wichita for the 2010 Annual Kansas Staff Development Leadership Conference. The theme of this year’s conference is Making an Impact, a focus that is as important as ever considering the tough economic times and the challenges posed to our schools and districts. Educators are now asked to do more with less. Additionally, funding for professional learning is questioned and we’ve got a responsibility to show the importance of continuous educator learning as the foundation for all students’ learning and achievement. The Leadership Conference promises to provide ample learning opportunity to build the knowledge, skills, and abilities of educators and their learning organizations in order that they demonstrate the importance of quality professional learning for improved student learning.

During the pre-conference partici-pants will have the opportunity to engage in dialogue and breakout sessions led by educators from across the state of Kansas who are integrating 21st Century Learning Skills into the curriculum delivered on a daily basis in their classrooms. Breakout sessions offer experiences in the use of technology that

supports professional learning and enhances educators’ ability to reach each student.

We are excited to provide one of the most respected and recognized educators in professional learning as our keynote speaker. Joellen Killion, NSDC Deputy Executive Director, will share her expertise and insight for assessing the impact of professional learning. She will follow her keynote presentation with a breakout session. Participants will have numerous other breakout sessions from which to se-lect that are led by our colleagues from across the state, building upon the messages of the pre-conference and keynote address.

It is the purpose of the National Staff Development Council and the Kansas Staff Development Council as an affiliate of NSDC to ensure that every educator engages in effective profes-sional learning every day so every student learns. It is our hope that the 2010 KSDC Leadership Conference moves you as an educator closer to the reality of NSDC’s purpose. We invite you to engage, learn, dialogue, process, reflect, apply, examine the impact, and most importantly enjoy!

Respectfully,Dr. Diane GrossDr. Diane Gross, KSDC President

Keynote Speaker Joellen Killion NSDC Deputy Executive Director

Assessing Impact of Professional Learning

Joellen Killion will identify how educators from classroom teachers

to superintendents share a part of the responsibility for knowing if

professional learning produces its intended results. In an era

of accountability, it is increasingly more important to ask and

answer questions about the effectiveness of professional learning

not only to assess its results, but also to make improvements.

Make an Impact with KillionJoellen Killion focuses her work with NSDC on improving professional

learning for all educators. She has penned many books and articles

on the topic of results-based staff development, and she has

extensive experience in professional development planning,

design, implementation, and evaluation both at the school

and system level.

The creed Killion lives by is:

Excellence can be achieved if you...

Care more than others think is wise...

Risk more than others think is safe...

Dream more than others think is practical...

Expect more than others think is possible...

Making An Impact through the use of 21st Century Tools

iConnect iLearn a facilitated “unconference” format initiates

peer-to-peer learning, collaboration, and innovative thinking

If you’re like many educators, it’s the love for your learners and concern for their futures that drives you. As you join the larger community of 21st century educators, you will be challenged and driven to try new things, meet new people and access new resources that will empower your learners to drive themselves into their futures.

Every car comes with options that help the driver find their way on the educational highway but often after we buy the car, we never add new options. We want to offer you the chance to add many new and free (or affordable) options that will take your school to new places. Your license will let you drive, but we challenge you to venture beyond the main road onto a more scenic route.

Making An Impact through Coaching with Joellen Killion

Designed for educators who were either in the NSDC Coaching Academy or participants of the Kansas coaching academy held during the 2008-2009 school year. As coaches work with peers, regardless of the amount of preparation they have, they want more — more skills, knowledge, strategies, and resources. Essentially they fully embrace their role as a learner. Building on input from coaches, this day-long session will focus on refining coaches’ skillfulness in key roles, examining case studies related to coaching to personalize learning, and strengthening the community of coaches in Kansas.

Leadership Conference

Making An Impact and Measuring It!

The KSDC Leadership Conference offers opportunities to examine whether our professional learning experiences are producing their intended results. A series of breakout sessions, led by educators from across the state, will highlight the “nuts and bolts” of implementing staff development that makes an impact and how to measure that impact. As an added measure, classroom practices that are making an impact in student achievement for Kansas kids will also be shared.

Tuesday, April 13 and Wednesday, April 14 —

Breakout Session A Tuesday ~ 10:00 - 11:15 a.m.

A1~ Resources, Resources, and More Resources: All Free and Work on Any Computer Platform Cyndi Danner-KuhnEducation Technology Integration Coordinator/ Faculty KSU College of Education

There is no shortage of “cool new web tools.” Learn about a variety of cool tools and include specific ideas, tips, and mini-lessons centered on the pedagogical use of Web 2.0. All teachers need ways to easily and effectively weave these tools into curriculum and instruction. These are quick takes on an activity that can be done with technology tools in an engaging way. Most are quick, easy to implement and designed to have beginning Web 2.0 teachers feel “Yeah, I could do that!” Those of us who have been using the tools could think “Yeah, what a great idea! I’m going to do that, too!” or “I know just the teacher who would love trying this!”

A2~ Research on Teaching Vocabulary Deborah DoernThird Grade teacher, Pray Woodman Elementary, Maize USD 226

A presentation of the first year’s research project from WSU Curriculum and Instruction Master’s Program focusing on vocabulary instruction. Data presented from before and after students were taught with new vocabulary strategies, and will include student examples.

Breakout Session A Tuesday ~ 10:00 - 11:15 a.m.

A3~ Finding What Works: One School’s Journey to Productive Professional Development Jeanne DisneyKU Pathways Instructional Coach Paula Reilly Instructional Coach

Learn about one school’s attempt to energize professional development by embedding it into the teachers’ weekly schedule; a model involving an eight-week rotation focused on topics teachers chose to pursue building-wide and that provided staff with the time and support necessary for powerful and impactful learning to occur. Data will be presented addressing the program’s effectiveness along with it’s role in developing a culture of learning throughout the school.

Breakout Session B Tuesday ~ 12:45 - 2:45 p.m.

B1~ Web 2.0: Share the Adventure Cyndi Danner-KuhnEducation Technology Integration Coordinator/ Faculty KSU College of Education

With the emergence of Web 2.0 tools, we are seeing a shift in how schools may address teacher growth and development. For many teachers, Web 2.0 tools offer exciting opportunities for students to express themselves and take command of technology that stretches the mind and reaches outside school walls. For some teachers, these tools are like trying to take a drink of water from a fire hose - endlessly expanding into a bewildering array of choices. It is a daunting task to figure out all the options with Web 2.0 tools and choose the “best” one to introduce to students. But why should you have all the fun? Share your Learning Adventure 2.0 with your students, and you will benefit from the experience.

B2~ Whose Job IS Recognition? Molly LesterProfessional Development Manager of Classified Staff, Olathe Schools

What is recognition? Who should do it? Who should receive it? Understand how recognition works when done right! It’s not necessarily about plaques and ceremonies. There are many levels of recognition that are necessary in order for making your employees feel appreciated and engaged in the mission of your district.

Breakout Session D Wednesday ~ 8:30 - 9:45 a.m.

D1~ It’s Not the 20th Century Any More: So why do we teach as though it is? Cyndi Danner-KuhnEducation Technology Integration Coordinator/ Faculty KSU College of Education

We are struggling with a financial crisis unparalleled in our lifetime, and at the same time in leading 21st Century schools around the world, learning is experiencing a transformation that was impossible in the 20th Century factory schools. Learn about emerging technologies for engaging, thinking, learning, collaborating, creating, and innovating. These technologies have foundations in social constructivism where students drive their own learning experiences through educational networking and emerging technologies. An additional goal of this session is using mostly free, open-source, or minimal cost tools. Let’s put laptops and Web 2.0 technologies in the hands and minds of Kansas students. Here is a glimpse into the possibilities that are out there for 21st Century teaching and learning. Participants will leave with a wealth of knowledge of different Web 2.0 applications and how to use them in classroom instruction and gather ideas for “discovering the possibilities” for technology use in their own classrooms.

D2~ More Than One Route To Success: Individualizing Reading Strategies Shelly JenningsThird Grade teacher, Pray Woodman Elementary, Maize USD 226

As educators, we are constantly seeking how to individualize instruction the most effective way possible and how to differentiate our classrooms. This presentation is based on the action research the presenter performed on the bottom 20th percentile of reading learners, spring of 2009. Individual diagnosing of learning took place for five student in the area of reading. Intense, individualized instruction was performed on these students. Significant gains were shown on national scores (NWEA), state scores, and local scores. Current research is taking place in this classroom on learning “expenditures” for higher learners. Take a peek at possible ways educators can organize their classrooms to work with students one-on-one and in small groups so learners can achieve the highest amount of instruction possible.

D3~ Climate and Culture of the School: How do we measure that? Sue KiddKansas Character Education Grant CoordinatorCindy PattonKansas Character Education Grant Evaluation Consultant

Establishing a climate and culture that supports and challenges is key to student success and all learning...but HOW do you measure that? We will look at some possible ways to collect data that are FREE and lead to great professional conversations.

Breakout Session E Wednesday ~ 10:00 - 11:15 a.m.

E1~ 21st Century Skills — We’re Already 10 Years In...What’s Happening? Dayna RichardsonAssistant Superintendent, Buhler USD 313Kathy BoyerEducation Program Consultant, KSDE

21st Century skills combine technology, literacy, critical thinking, creativity, and mastery of core subject matter. An initial step to ensure these skills become part of Kansas’ schools was the creation of The Profiles of a 21st Century Learner and the Profile of a 21st Century Learning Environment. Following field review and input, the profiles were endorsed by the State Board of Education in December 2008. Organized into 15 unifying themes, these two profiles are beginning to shape the review of content area standards, integration of academic and technical education, the development of a new generation of assessments, etc. Many schools and districts across the state are already journeying down the path toward 21st Century learning while others are uncertain of how and where to begin.

Come join us for a discussion of the 21st Century Profiles for Learners and the Environment. Learn how one district kicked off the school year with a serious discussion and engaging activities for staff to highlight the importance of intentional planning and focus on 21st Century skills.

E2~ Parent Involvement: From Ticket Takers to Difference Makers Jane GroffDirector, Kansas Parent Information Resource Center

This session will focus on making an impact with parent involvement and measuring it. We will discuss the new parent involvement policy template and the school-parent compact available to schools. We will also discuss the rubric that can be used to measure effective parent involvement in schools and districts. Video clips will be shown as well as small group work on the National Standards for Family School Partnerships endorsed by KSBE in January of 2008. Resources will be shared with all attendees.

E3~ Engaging Your Classified Staff Molly LesterProfessional Development Manager of Classified Staff, Olathe Schools

In order for staff to be motivated in today’s society, they need to be engaged with other employees, with the mission, and with student learning. It is essential for leaders to build trust, engage emotions, and leverage motivators that work for their employees and peers.
