Church Board Notes We are on a journey together. Your Church Board is part of our collective journey. We meet every 2nd Wednesday of each month to plan, report, and to share. During the August 8th meeting the discussion of hospitality and community regarding our denominational region, the courtyard, and the use of the lockers located in our parking lot surfaced. Welcoming Our Community: The Matthew 25 committee’s recommendation to re-open the courtyard, as a place of respite and quiet conversation, was passed. The new hours will be: Open 7 am-7 pm May-September and 7 am-5 pm October-April. New signage is being posted. Everyone is inv i ted to the Courtyard's Re-Dedication and Ice Cream Social on Sunday, Sept. 2nd after our 10 am service. During the Farmers Market on Thursday, Sept. 6th we will also welcome our McMinnville community into the courtyard providing cool water and games. The Matthew 25 committee is also launching a new use and lockage system for the lockers in our parking lot. The lockers will be cleaned, painted, and repaired. People using the lockers will participate in a locker use and lock training program. The Matthew 25 committee will monitor the locker area frequently.

Building Community with our Regional Churches: The annual meeting of our American Baptist Churches of the Central Pacific Coast is happening in Richmond, CA, October 19-21.  The theme is “Imagine the Future Church.” We can contribute our rich heritage and vision for the future with our regional churches. FBC has 4 delegates and more are invited to attend. Do you want to be a delegate? There are some FBC assistance funds available if you wish to attend. Please let me know as soon as possible! Discounts for rooms are available if you register before Sept. 19th. Please find more info on Page 5 about this event. Please join me in this community-building event! Good News for our FBC Community today and in the future: Work has begun on the repair of our South Wall. The stucco and drainage repair is underway. We ask for your patience during the closure of the south parking lot during this repair. Thank you for your generosity in making this work possible. FBC Church Board represents You: Please contact [email protected] with any questions, comments, or concerns. Peace be with you, your Moderator, JoAnn Sims

Thoughts from Pastor Erika

Sunday Worship Highlights FBC is a Matthew 25 church, inspired by the words of Jesus,

"Whatever you do unto the least of my sisters & brothers, you do unto me."

"Every human encounter invites us to adjust our fragile equilibrium to the push or pull of a new other," writes Maria Poggi Johnson in Making a Welcome: Christian Living and the Practice of Hospitality. That's wisdom we're taking into our grant year, this year of programming ahead of us that will invite us to celebrate the diversity present in our congregation and call on the gifts that diversity brings as we shape our worship experience together. We're borrowing her title - Making a Welcome - because it so well suits what we hope to do together in the months ahead: welcome guests who will teach us about valuing all of the voices in our gatherings; welcome our own wild ideas and holy impulses as we engage in creating worship materials together; welcome our friends, families, and neighbors in new ways to our life of faith together, and prepare ourselves, and the equilibrium of our congregation, for the shift that happens as we grow together. We'll begin this work, in the September/October sermon series, by looking at who we say we are as American Baptists, and at how being rooted in that common identity calls us to make a welcome wherever we find ourselves. As we begin, I'd invite you to consider: when, where, how has a welcome been made for you? What has that been like? How are you, these days, making a welcome with your own life?

Introduction to Centering Prayer, a Two-Part Workshop Saturday, October 20th & 27th - 12 pm to 4 pm both days

Centering Prayer is a method of prayer revived from ancient teachings in the Christian contemplative heritage that emphasizes prayer as listening

to God in silence. By taking time to "rest in God" each day, we prepare to receive the gift of God's presence.

The 1st day will explore the method of Centering Prayer and its contextual background. The 2nd day will help to answer questions that arise from the practice through videos and discussion.

Both days provide two opportunities to practice Centering Prayer. Suggested donation of $35 (scholarships available). To register or for more info contact Lynn Crowell:

Courtyard Clean-Up

Help beautify the courtyard

after its months of closure during construction.

We'll pick up trash, prune the hanging baskets (taken down from the south wal l ) , do weeding and landscaping, and work on other small projects that will make a big difference.

One of the dreams for the courtyard is to construct a Little Free Library. If you can lead the construction of one and/or help collect books for it, please let Building & Grounds chair Steve Howard know:

Community Nine-Square-in-the-Air Game

FBC folk and our community are invited to the FBC courtyard during Farmers Market hours, noon until 6 pm. Come play this fun group game combining volleyball with 9-Square on the ground. Each player defends their square. They get one hit to get the ball out of their square and into another. As long as the ball doesn't hit the ground in your square, you stay in.

Stop by, even if just to watch, but be warned: you might get hooked on this game! We'll also be providing bottles of water for all those that stop by to enjoy our COURTYARD!!

Here is a brief history . . . About 7 years ago a small group of p e o p l e i n M c M i n n v i l l e g o t together around the issue of the lack of affordable health care. Their response was to create a free clinic where anyone needing health care

could come and have access to doctors and nurse practitioners as well as a range of services that have eventually included chiropractic care, counseling, RN education, referrals to community resources, assistance with applying for OHP, and a prayer team.

One of the first tasks was finding a suitable space where this could happen. And since there were minimal funds, a place without charge. FBC offered this. And for the past 6+ years we've been operating at FBC the 1st & 3rd Saturdays each month. We thank FBC for providing clinic & office space, volunteers, and lunch - it has been invaluable!

In the first 5 years of operation, March 2012-March 2017, we had 1762 patient visits to the clinic. We have vouchers from WVMC for lab services and physical therapy for patients. When we saw the need for dental care we partnered with Medical Teams International (NWMTI) to schedule a free mobil dental clinic in McMinnville as often as possible.

The people who come to the clinic are quite varied - those new to the area, new to the country, working but unable to afford insurance, seniors who can't find a provider or can't afford co-pays, those who lost their health insurance with their jobs or a glitch in the system. It is not an over-statement to say that clinic services provided have been life saving.

______________________________ Perhaps some of you read about the McMinnville Free Clinic in a recent issue of the News-Register. One of our current goals is to be more visible in the community. We are looking for one or two volunteers in our office to help coordinate the many activities it takes to run the clinic. We need people with experience in medical offices and computer skills. If you are interested please go to our website at www.mcminnvillefreeclinic.org and fill out a volunteer form.

Discernment Committee, Church Board Respond to Questions from Regional Leadership

After FBC chose to join the Association of Welcoming and Affirming Baptists, Rev. Steve Bils, executive minister of our region, sent us three questions often posed to him from churches that don't identify as welcoming and affirming of LGBTQIA+ people. He asked us to respond, so that he might know our perspective, and be equipped to answer when those questions came to him. The Discernment Committee (Bill Apel, Mike Burr, David Ferry, Joel Kiff, Robin Knauerhase, Gary Langenwalter, Erika Marksbury, Shelly Sanderlin, JoAnn Sims, Charlie Walker, and Don Watson) drafted answers, and with slight edits, the Church Board approved them and sent them on. We wanted to share them with you. Below is Steve's third question to us, in italics, and our response in plain type. You can find the first question/answer in the July Tidings, and the second in August's issue. Please contact Erika ([email protected]) or any committee member with questions.

3.) Marriage in the Bible is always seen as between a biological male and a biological female. There are instances where some men might have multiple simultaneous marriages (polygamy), but even those marriages follow the male-female pattern. We see this as being in harmony with the origin of marriage in Genesis and with Jesus’ teaching about marriage when He was questioned about divorce in the Gospels. Although our culture and our government have moved from this traditional characterization of marriage, we feel pressured by the empire to apply a church or kingdom blessing to same-sex unions. What can you tell us that might help us overcome our reluctance?

Our understanding of marriage varies significantly from what we know of marriage in the Biblical context(s). That form of “traditional” marriage was often primarily about family/clan concerns, and did not take into consideration choice, consent, companionship, affection, love, or even what we now consider basic human rights. We do not believe it would be consistent with the teachings of the Bible to copy patterns of marriage we see in the Hebrew scriptures, that assume ownership of women and deal-making as part of their processes. Instead, we look to the ethical dimensions of what God intends when two people are joined in the covenantal bonds of marriage: a model like the one witnessed to in 1st Corinthians 13, where those who love are generous and mutually self-sacrificing, regardless of gender.

That said, within our American Baptist tradition, and within other traditions as well, pastors have always been able to join people in marriage, or not, at their discretion. At FBC McMinnville, we apply the same standards to an LGBTQ+ couple’s request to be married as we would any other: how thoughtfully is this union being entered into? What kinds of counseling have been done, or need to be done, to prepare for life together? Is this union the true desire of both parties? We understand marriage to be a voluntary commitment entered into by two consenting, loving adults, and where we see that commitment on display, it is an honor to participate in the blessing of it.

We understand weddings, like baptisms and baby blessings, to be significant statements to the community about a person’s (or a couple’s) intentions – and coming to a church for a wedding signifies an intention to invite and celebrate God’s presence in a couple’s life. We also view weddings as settings where both pastor and congregation are called on to witness to the best of our tradition – settings where pastoral care is paramount, where the love and participation of a community are invited to shine, where people will be folded deeper into the life of faith, or encouraged outside of it, depending on the response of the church they ask to share these moments with. Weddings are not chances for us to judge – that’s not our role – they are chance for us to join in deepened communion with those who choose to share their joy.

This program is made possible through a Vital Worship Grant from the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship, Grand Rapids, Michigan, with funds provided by Lilly Endowment Inc.

A Year of Vital Worship We at FBC will be spending the year exploring ways to create vital worship. We want to devote time, energy and resources to creating a worship experience that allows for innovation, imagination and active participa-tion by all, who vary significantly from one another in age, Christian experience, intellectual ability, mental health, and socio-economic status. Throughout the year there will be opportunities to become engaged in discussions, and learn to create at workshops. We will also have a new prayer station each month in the sanctuary and we will be developing a children’s Pray-ground. All are welcome to come and engage.

Doxology Creation Workshop Doxology is a liturgical expression of praise to God. Steve Gretz will lead us in singing and song writing. Come and learn how a doxology is an affirmation after scripture or offertory. This is a historically Christian song and we will have the opportunity to cre-ate our own.

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him all creatures here below Praise Him above ye heavenly hosts; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost

Intentionally Inclusive Discussion In a society that is increasingly diverse in race and ethnicity, religious background and theo-logical conviction, socioeconomic status and political perspectives, this practical resource explores the broad dimensions of what it means to be a multicultural community of faith . Grounded in biblical narrative as well as personal experiences, the book offers an authentic and honest look into a real-life experiment in inclusive ministry.

Banner Creation Workshop We often celebrate the church seasons and specials events with bright banners that draw churchgoers into worship. Banners give a visual message and can help create a worshipful atmosphere. Working together on a banner can bind people togeth-er. Enjoy the day creating banners and other expressions of art with Georgine Ben-ner. All are welcome and no experience is necessary.

Lord’s Prayer Creation Workshop The question of, “How do we pray?” is one that is often asked and one that was posed thousands of years ago by the disciples. In Luke 11:1-4, when one of Jesus’ disciples ask Him, “Lord, teach us to pray,” Jesus replied by giving us the prayer that we recite countless times throughout our lifetime. With the help of Elwyn Benke, let’s take a closer look at what each line means, and how we can apply this prayer to our lives. We will read a variety of versions and develop one of our own.
