    Making asaline watersolution by dissolvingtable salt(NaCl) inwater. The salt is the solute and the water the solvent.

    Solution

    Inchemistry, a solution is ahomogeneousmixturecomposed of only onephase. In such a mixture, a solute is asubstancedissolvedin another substance, known as asolvent. Thesolventdoes the dissolving. The solution

    more or less takes on the characteristics of the solvent including its phase, and the solvent is commonly the

    major fraction of the mixture. Theconcentrationof a solute in a solution is a measure of how much of thatsolute is dissolved in the solvent.

    Wave

    a wave is a disturbance or oscillation that travels throughspacetime, accompanied by a transfer ofenergy.

    Wave motion transfersenergyfrom one point to another, often with no permanent displacement of the particles

    of the mediumthat is, with little or no associated mass transport. They consist, instead, ofoscillationsor

    vibrations around almost fixed locations. Waves are described by a wave equation which sets out how thedisturbance proceeds over time. The mathematical form of this equation varies depending on the type of wave.

    There are two main types of waves.Mechanical wavespropagate through a medium, and the substance of thismedium is deformed. The deformation reverses itself owing torestoring forcesresulting from its deformation.

    For example, sound waves propagate via air molecules colliding with their neighbors. When air molecules

    collide, they also bounce away from each other (a restoring force). This keeps the molecules from continuing totravel in the direction of the wave.

    The second main type of wave,electromagnetic waves, do not require a medium. Instead, they consist ofperiodic oscillations of electrical and magnetic fields generated by charged particles, and can therefore travel

    through avacuum. These types of waves vary in wavelength, and includeradio waves,microwaves,infrared

    radiation,visible light,ultraviolet radiation,X-rays, andgamma rays.

    Further, the behavior of particles inquantum mechanicsis described by waves and researchers believe that

    gravitational wavesalso travel through space, although gravitational waves have never been directly detected.

    A wave can betransverseorlongitudinaldepending on the direction of its oscillation. Transverse waves occur

    when a disturbance creates oscillations perpendicular (at right angles) to the propagation (the direction ofenergy transfer). Longitudinal waves occur when the oscillations areparallelto the direction of propagation.

    While mechanical waves can be both transverse and longitudinal, all electromagnetic waves are transverse.
