MAKING A DIFFERENCEANNUAL REPORT FISCAL YEAR 2013 (06/12-05/13)

RECALLS DROPPEDIn 2008, Danny’s Law was passed. To date, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission has, as the law requires, set strong new mandatory standards foreight types of children’s products including toys, cribs, swings and more. KID is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting children by improvingchildren’s product safety.

KID was founded in 1998 by Linda Ginzeland Boaz Keysar, the parents of sixteen-month-old Danny Keysar who died inhis Chicago childcare home when a portable crib collapsed around his neck.

KID’s mission is to PROMOTEthe development of safer children’s products, ADVOCATE for children, and EDUCATEthe public, especially parents and caregivers, about dangerous children’s products.

“This is the best site on the Internet for new moms and ALL those

that care for babies and small children!”–from KID facebook page

Through outreach and education, KID gives caregivers the tools they need to keep children safe. Our evaluations show almost all participants in the Safefrom the Start workshop take steps to keep children safe from checking products and posting recalls to checking for choking hazards with KID’s handy TPtube check – if it fits inside a toilet paper tube, it is too small for children under three.

PROMOTING THE DEVELOPMENT OF SAFER CHILDREN’S PRODUCTSIn June CPSC adopted its first standard for play yards. It is now mandatory that these products be tested to avoid design flaws such as those that killed Danny Keysarand many other children. CPSC Chairman InezTenenbaum was joined by Linda Ginzel, NancyCowles, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky andRachel Weintraub of Consumer Federation of Americain Washington, DC to mark the passage.

Students working through KID’s innovative TEST (Teach Early Safety Testing) program developed prototypesto address hazards in cribs, bassinets, infant seats andmore. The program continues to bring design safety concepts to undergraduate engineering students. Ninety-four percent of participants responding to a surveysaid they will take away valuable product safety lessonsfrom the experience.

EDUCATING THE PUBLIC,ESPECIALLY PARENTS & CAREGIVERSABOUT PRODUCT SAFETYWe are a growing presence in the community; providing a unique safety message to thousands ofparents and caregivers.

Our materials and trainings give parents and caregivers the tools they need to keep children safe. From pediatricians at their annual conference to expectant parents at community baby showers andearly childhood educators at an information fair, KID’s safety message was heard throughout the state. Wepresented our Creating Safe Environments for Childrenworkshops at Easter Seals of Metropolitan Chicago, the YWCA in Glendale Heights, and at HeartlandHuman Services in Effingham, Illinois to name a few.

We are focused on reaching a rapidly growing population of caregivers - grandparents. To stay connected with the expanding grandparentcommunity and keep informed of their needs, KID hasjoined the Illinois Grandparents Raising Grandkidstask force. The task force meets quarterly and in May2013 KID was the featured presenter at a task forcemeeting in Springfield, Illinois. To stay connected withadditional grandparents, KID attends communityevents around Chicago and exhibited at theGovernor’s Conference on Aging in December 2012.

ADVOCATING FOR CHILDREN KID is the voice for parents on children’s product safety. This yearwe testified in Maryland to support their ban on the sale of dangerous crib bumper pads, and at a CPSC hearing onpriorities for the agency. KID published Safe Sleep, Safe Play: Children’s Product Recalls in 2012, examining thedecrease in children’s product recalls since the passage in 2008 of “Danny’s Law” which requires strong standards andindependent testing.

Online or in print, KID is getting our name and ourmessage out to the public. KID has teamed up with many publications includingThe Bump, Chicago Parent, Expectant Mothers Guideand Kids Magazine to share information about safesleep practices, recalls, and so much more. Onlinewe have partnered with organizations includingNeighborhood Parent Network, GRAND Magazine, and Parent Tested, Parent Approved to provide monthly blog posts on their high traffic sites.

You’ll find KID on a variety of social media platforms –check out our educational resources on Pinterest or ourvolunteer testimonials on YouTube. This is in additionto regular recall and product safety news postings onour blog, Facebook & Twitter. We want to be wherever parents are looking for reliable safety info. And our email newsletter now reaches almost 7,000 monthly.
