Community Investment Officers trained in Advice and Guidance provide support and signposting for customers to help them on their journey back to the work place.

inspiring futures launched in April 2014 and is Coastline’s support programme to enable customers to improve their financial wellbeing by accessing support, training, funding and employment opportunities to get back to work. This document highlights the outcomes for customers and the impact for our communities of inspiring futures during its first year.

During 2014/15 strong partnership links were developed which supported inspiring futures. We are proud of what has been achieved by working together and would like to thank all the agencies involved.

Active Plus is proud to work alongside the inspiring futures programme and delighted with the success they have achieved with young people in Cornwall.

Chris Allen Active Plus

As an IAG (Information, Advice & Guidance) Mentor at Work Skills Training Academy, Cornwall College I am delighted and excited to be part of the working partnership with Coastline Housing’s inspiring futures. To have such an excellent work placement scheme to refer an unemployed customer to is brilliant. The work placements at Coastline are ‘real work’ experience, are well supported by the Coastline Staff and I have seen the enormous benefit they have given; confidence boosting, skill building and job outcomes.

1. Support

l Support from a Community Investment Officer trained in Advice and Guidance

l Access to food bank vouchers

l Signposting from a Coastline Community Champion trained in Welfare Reform changes

4. Employment opportunities

l Coastline provided access to MyWorkSearch to help customers search for jobs, create a CV and keep their JobCentre Plus advisor up to date

l Coastline promoted apprenticeships both internally and externally

l To help local people take steps to make their future more secure and to gain new skills and experience we offered eight week work placements for up to 10 people twice during the year. This included a comprehensive package of training which in turn helped them build their CV. Placements were offered right across Coastline and created a real experience of work in a supportive environment

3. Funding

Coastline gave customers’ access to the Open4training&development funding portal which provided easy access to funding opportunities to help with course fees, exam costs, childcare and living expenses.

2. Training

Coastline provided or sign posted customers to work focused education and training. Courses covered everything from confidence and assertiveness, through to the building trade CSCS cards, basic food hygiene and first aid qualifications.

During 2014/15 inspiring futures included four key areas:

Work placements

Leanna CoxCommunity Investment Officer at Coastline Housing

I’ve really enjoyed seeing our work placements doing so well. All of them put so much into finding out about Coastline and how the skills they learned here could be used with other employers. We’re so pleased that some have been able to secure employment with us while others have gone onto gain local jobs or attend more training. Giving everyone a tailored work plan to follow during their eight weeks made sure each individual placement got the most out of it, and staff across the company tell me they are really pleased to see people increasing their opportunities to get back into work

We helped local people by providing work experience placements. Over two eight week sessions, 20 job seekers joined us to learn new skills and gain real experience in a supportive workplace. They also received a series of training sessions in things like first aid and interview techniques, all of which helped bring their CVs right up to date and improved their chances of securing a job.

LeonThe Community Investment Team informed me about training and opportunities for people claiming unemployment benefit, Job Seekers Allowance and Employment Support Allowance.

I attended an Explore Course, a ROLO Course, CSCS, practical and Work Placement training on the Work Skills Training Academy and Kier training site Quintrell Downs.

This was a long process, starting with practical community projects like creating an allotment site for residents. I also gained Health & Safety qualifications for Land Based Operatives and Construction Skills Certification Scheme, Level 1 Award in Health & Safety. With the work placement and construction skills at Work Skills Training Academy and Kier site my confidence grew, I learnt new skills and enjoyed being part of the working team.

I have now been offered an Apprenticeship as a Brick Layer and am self-employed!

All I’ve ever done is painting and decorating but since I’ve been in Cornwall, for last 2½ years, it’s been hard to find work so I haven’t worked at all.

ErikaLettings, Coastline Housing

The eight week placement has been brilliant! The placement was really useful and I would recommend it for other people who want to get back into work.

DanHR/PR/Communications, Coastline Housing

It’s been amazing, I’ve had so much of a confidence boost over the eight weeks and it’s been a pleasure working here. Working in HR it was lovely to call up people and say we’d like you to come in for an interview for a job vacancy, just to hear the pleasure in their voice and how happy they were to get that news and for me to be the one to give it to them.

FareedRepairs, Coastline Housing

I’m not the sort of person who sits down, I just wanted to get out there and get hands on and I’ve been out fixing customers’ properties. It’s really, really useful. Getting all the training certificates helps towards getting employment.

I’ve enjoyed the atmosphere here working with different people and it’s given me the confidence that I can do this job in the future.

Absolutely amazing, really good, so friendly, treated like an equal not as you’re the work placement so you must do the filing, very welcoming, very friendly, couldn’t have asked for better.

LynnDevelopment Team, Coastline Housing

I left after the eight weeks with refreshed skills, valuable training, more confidence and feeling appreciated. Being with Coastline has helped to restore my self-worth and belief in my abilities.

CraigGrounds Maintenance, Coastline Services

It’s experience isn’t it, getting out there, foot in the door. I’ve really enjoyed it. I’m working with a good team, I’m on different sets of tools, Coastline provide transport to and from the site I’m working on.

ChrisTechnical Services, Coastline Housing

I would definitely recommend applying for this because I’ve learnt so many new skills and met so many new people with it. There’s nothing bad to say about it. It’s definitely a recommendation.

StephenGrounds Maintenance, Coastline Services

The onsite training by the grounds maintenance team has been first rate, and I’m on my way to becoming a grass cutting Jedi!

Making a difference through work placements

We have undertaken a social impact assessment of inspiring futures 2014/15 using the HACT Wellbeing Valuation model, which enables us to measure the success of inspiring futures by assessing how much it has increased people’s wellbeing.

HACT analyse the results of large national to isolate the effect of a particular factor on a person’s wellbeing. Analysis then reveals the equivalent amount of money needed to increase someone’s wellbeing by the same amount. The valuation does not seek to value individual’s experience of inspiring futures but instead represents the experience of the average person.

Our social impact assessment of inspiring futures 2014/15 demonstrated that for £1 invested £14.06 of social impact was created.

Our plansinspiring futures is more important now than ever to continue to support Cornish communities. We will continue building the programme to increase the number of customers that can access and benefit from the programme.

During 2015/16 we will:

l Deliver two more eight week work placement sessions to support 20 more job seekers

l Support a further 200 customers to benefit from inspiring futures

l Work in partnership with organisations to provide training and back to work opportunities for customers

l Investigate ways to increase the opportunities for customers to benefit from work placements
