• Cleaning and preparing the interior walls you want to paint is just as important as the painting itself. Dirt, dust and grease can potentially ruin your paint job, so make sure to give the walls a rinse with Selleys® Sugar Soap before painting.

• Consider the amount of natural light you get in the space you plan to paint. Dark feature walls are best reserved for a room with lots of natural light, while lighter tones are best used in more light-poor spaces.

As lifestyles and family dynamics change and grow, so often do the homes we live in. Alex and Romy recently moved from an apartment into a Federation-style home. So, it’s no surprise that their old furniture and decor felt at odds with their new home. As such, your colour, furniture and decor choices should not be a one-style-fits-all scenario, but rather, tailored and defined by your current setting. After all, the type, size, lighting and use of certain rooms will be different from one home to the next, so it makes perfect sense to design accordingly.

STEP 3: Allow two days for paintingThe couple tackled the DIY paint job over a weekend, getting up early on the Saturday morning to clean and tape the walls before applying the first coat on both the feature walls and a Dulux® Vivid White™ on the others. By Sunday, all walls were ready for a second and last coat.

STEP 4: Let your fresh walls do the talkingOnce the painting was complete, Alex and Romy used the fresh colour scheme to inspire their choice of new furniture for the space. This included a duck-egg sofa, gold-trimmed coffee table and a Moroccan-style rug to help pull everything together.

STEP 5: Add the finishing touchesAlex and Romy also carefully thought out what tones and textures they could introduce with the use of decor. The previously unused window wall was transformed into additional seating by adding a mix of dusty pink and grey cushions, and indoor plants with varying shades of green were welcomed in as another way of connecting the outside to the inside.

STEP 1: Predict how you will use the spaceBeing the most light-filled room in the house, Alex and Romy could see themselves spending a lot of time in the room, unwinding together as well as entertaining guests. Knowing this, they set out to make the space feel more inviting.

STEP 2: Find inspiration all aroundThe room looked out onto their backyard, so Alex and Romy used the lovely lavender growing in the garden as colour inspiration for their feature walls, choosing Dulux® Obsession and Dulux® Well Tempered, both variations of lavender, as a result.
